AI about to make a lot of folks go Uncle Ted on the system, I'll tell ya what

andthephantom wasn't really talking about AC's music and their process specifically using AI. They were more broadly speculating about how the advent of AI music might steer human music makers and producers to be more organic, unpredictable and collaborative in order to stand out from AI generated stuff in the decades ahead

Since AnCo epitomizes those three traits, they went on to suggest that AC could be leaders in that trend.

AI music and art is here to stay for better or worse, and I've lately been thinking about that process andthephantom posted about as a potential silver lining. AI is a verrry sensitive thing now and I certainly have some meditating to do on it, because it's about to explode exponentially, and it's probably gonna really transform our shit

Thanks, nothingmaster - exactly the point I was trying to make. And apologies to the group if my initial comment felt like pointless pot-stirring.

Maybe it's worth a separate thread . . . or maybe folks aren't interested in the topic. But my comment came in THIS thread because folks were talking about the radical experimental directions they hope AC will go in their post-Skiffs-2 songwriting. I agree, and I'm excited by that prospect. I was only trying to suggest that there is real artistic space right now for such an approach to be embraced by listeners beyond AC's existing fanbase. Hell, maybe Danse will finally get its due.

My reading of this moment: we're gonna get both a ton of terrible music in the next 10 years and a healthy bit of organic human-created stuff unlike anything we've heard before. I don't think AC will "use" AI. But I can't imagine AC going into its next project without thinking about how this context informs new music creation and what opportunities this moment open up.

Situation with AI is already bleak enough. I don't see AC ever having interest in fucking with it any way ever. Hell, the new album is no plug ins, could be pure analog. Arguably there are trends in music they've been ahead of that they immediately lose interest in once it takes hold.

Arguably hyper-pop. That shit already sounds AI generated, thank god anco didn’t go any further towards that path after painting with

I think the issue with hyperpop is less the music itself and more the people making it and the culture that surrounds it. So much of it is drenched in layer after layer of irony to the point where the music comes off as soulless and totally insincere. Like the music itself is a joke. As a listener it feels a bit like, why should I care about your music if you don’t even care?? If that makes sense. It hasn’t always been that way. If you listen to early AG Cook and PC Music stuff, it retains the hyperpop feel but still has a lot of humanity and feeling. Can’t forget SOPHIE as well.

"AI art" seems like a misnomer at this stage. Because right now what we're talking about is just procedurally generated media. It still takes a human to enter a prompt, initiate the procedure, and perceive the thing created. Also a lot of digital media has become more and more procedure based the last decade through the use of software tools. We're now seeing those processes become fully automated now, which seemed to be the natural conclusion anyway

And honestly I'm not too concerned about it currently because we'll always have music. It's in our DNA

AI is just another tool that artists can use to create. it's the same thing artists have always done - taking various influences and combining them or reinterpreting them in a different way. artists still have to get creative with the prompts and inputs to make the results stand out, they can just be generated a lot faster and without technical skill

The project itself is a breakthrough for me in that it’s the first time I’m working intricately with nature. If nature doesn’t cooperate, I have nothing. That is a very difficult part of this process: giving up control and letting the performance be guided by the sky on any particular night.

The methods I am using to translate the light from celestial objects are similar to that of spectroscopy and asteroseismology. Both methods are used in Astronomy to determine the characteristics (i.e. elemental makeup, internal structure, etc.) of distant stars and planets. I’m interested in transmitting that information in less scientific and more visceral ways to be felt by an audience, to physically vibrate that information into them.

The Integratron was built by George Van Tassel with exact specifications for time travel, based on a formula supposedly given by a visitor from Venus. The Sirens is built according to his original theory, that the energy from a distant star or planet would vibrate the entire building. This then, would tune participants’ brains to a particular frequency. As far as I know, nothing like this has ever been attempted.

When I said that a couple of the singles from 7s sounded very much like his previous stuff, you got personal and I gently deflected it, no hard feelings. Shortly after, he said in an interview that he deliberately wrote some songs like his previous stuff for the first half of the album and you were very quiet. I don't expect an apology or acknowledgement, but a moment of pause.

The post above is a joke about our favourite band based on well-worn observations but any perceived criticism of Animal Collective weighs heavily on you. I find your psychological gymnastics about half-decent music fairly tiring to read but I leave you to it. Through sheer force of will, the prosaic must become poetry. The trivial transforms into transcendent. The word 'soldier' reminds you of a soldier.

I don't try to dissuade you from posting any of this, though. That's part of who you are. It's why you're here. There are about thirty people left and we'll be here until the place is gone. If you don't enjoy my posts, save yourself the bother and put me on ignore.

I thought about your comments when that interview was posted lol.

Re bolded: I see this a lot online (fanbases aggressively shutting down conversation on things that are critical of their favorite thing). The terrible irony is that I would personally described it as "stan culture". Sorry Stan lmao

But he said “there will be new Animal Collective music this year.”

He was super sweet, btw. Lovely dude."

The very early stages????

I really hope they’re having discussions about releasing the digital early and leaving the physical stuff for later. There is zero logic in waiting around.

Maybe we'll get some non-album singles in summer and the album at the end of the year. Or we'll get the album a bit earlier and an EP with the leftover songs in 2024. Anyway, we've waited so long already and got some nice avey and panda solo/collabs along the way, so +- a few months doesn't even bother me anymore.

A remarkable coincidence that a lunatic fan like me is called Stan, in fact. Originally, 'Stanshall', I went with the shortened version when returning after a ban or lost password.

I am a total Stan for AC 2001-2009, though. Zero critical faculties, blind violent defence.

I still love AC by the way, thought Reset was a fantastic album. Music Box stuff is their It Is OK since Glasslands 2008 to my tastes. Lots of bits and bobs over the years since have been brilliant, just smothered in a lot of less inspiring directions and decisions.

Fov suggested a thread on post-MPP favourites but I've been unwell and knackered so cba but I will at some point, might prompt some positivo chat.

Doesn't really sound like Domino is the sticking point. Their November quotes sounded like internal bickering. The new quote sounds like they've just kinda not gotten around to figuring it out.

they recorded these songs in the winter of 2021 into early 2022. really hard to imagine they've "not gotten around to figuring it out" just because they didn't feel like it or had differences in opinion. in Paw Tracks days they would've accelerated the process, sat down and hammered out a solution for how to release these tracks. the lag time is definitely because they realized Domino wasn't planning on releasing whatever they submitted any time soon.

glad to hear Deakin remains optimistic. i'm sticking with a September release date prediction

ya, that sounds about right.

read an interview with Xiu Xiu that said the turnaround between submitting an album and having it released has moved from 6 months to 10 months because of pressing plant delays. so we definitely can't blame Domino alone. the record industry is a bit of mess.

Lol, no kidding!

The (new) hip hop artists understand this in particular...when the album is done, it comes out the next week digitally. Maybe a CD or vinyl pressing a year later, but there's no waiting around at all.

AC breaking out of the traditional release mold seems unlikely, but it'd be wild to see them act a bit more recklessly... spontaneous releases, all new jams on tour, a random Deakin cassette of new hits at the merch table one night, a Panda Bear a capella tape the next, a Geo ambient thing a week after that, another reversed Avey album on CD for the heads... just imagine! All the while they're getting up on stage just after Skiffs 2 is released and they're blessing us with an ambient techno set...

lol … yeah. As much as i respect the desire to drop all forms of the album simultaneously, it seems absurd to sit on a finished record for the majority of a year just to make a big show of the vinyl release. At this point at least.

the only silver lining for this taking so long for me is that this feels like a fall record to me and it seems like that's when it will get released so thats kinda nice. both defeat/magicians feel like 'the leaves are turning brown and starting to fall off and winter is right around the corner' kinda vibe to me. crisp, brisk air, leaves on the ground, pumpkins on people's stoops...would be nice to have our first listen around that time

in the asheville interview, when asked about considering digital releases since physical is so slow, avey said (paraphrasing) that he would be down but "as much as i wanna put out stuff all the time, I want listeners to have time with each release. But maybe there would be a positive side to that too, so fans can pick and choose what they want to listen to."

plus he mentioned Domino's release schedule ofc

also the new record is completely mastered and every song from the live shows will be on the record. so defeat confirmed on the album lol

Nice.

I actually think the digital before physical is beneficial to people sitting with stuff these days when most people move on to the next thing in a week. Personally I love to pre-order an LP and get it months later when it has kind left my heavy rotation and then I can be like "oh yeah this record is great."
