Only listened to Invisible Darlings like 2 or 3 times when it dropped yesterday, gonna leave it alone until the whole thing is out. I've really had to fight the urge to play it again, which I'm taking as a good sign.

When Winter Wonderland came out, quite a few people said it sounded like AC on autopilot, compared to the rest of the album. That's the vibe I get here.

I don't expect every album to be an event or a distinct expression, particularly at this stage of their career, but The Musical and this one sound pretty rote.

Barring a select few, Dave tends to keep his best songs for the band while Noah keeps them for his solo records and I'm glad about that. If I get one Laughing Hieroglyphic, Goodside or A Sender, that's cool. I felt similarly about Eucalyptus and Cows. Pullhair Rubeye transcends almost anything in the wider AC catalogue but that's from a very different time, mindset and man.

This is a steaming hot take imo, though I don't totally agree for Noah's stuff from Merriweather but I suppose that wasn't really contending for space on any particular solo record anyway.

I wonder why it happens that way? Maybe it's the stuff the other band members resonate with? Or perhaps it's what they choose to present to the band because they think it'll resonate with them?

This feels like a real solo release to me where Reset doesn't quite. Reset grew on me real bad. This seems more meaty.

I seem to remember Noah saying in a interview he played the band all the demos he had
For skiffs and they chose what they liked best. Not sure how Dave does things

sounds like he might want to incorporate an acoustic portion of the show too with just a guitar. i feel like that opens up a ton of possibilities that they usually don't have on their tours

Alot of my previous releases have come from a very concrete vision of what i want the production to be like and the over all journey of the record Down There specifically. The 7s process was more about starting from scratch and just be able to interact with Adam McDaniel and the studio. The time was a very introspective for me. I was diving into the past as much as i was the present and future. So i think theres a little bit of hints at things ive done before in there but also hints of things to come. The later half of the record points toward the new perhaps and the first part is maybe a transition from the old. This record feels like a sort of marking of the end of certain creative styles for me and just kind of needing to set them free.

^that comment is super exciting, considering that we've only heard stuff from the first half of the album so far. He also said that Neurons was his favorite from the record and the one he's most excited for people to hear. And that Sweeper's Grin was written while practicing Hey Bog, which is why they appear next to each other.

very promising info! avey's albums usually take a lot longer to open up to me than other ac stuff so I'm reserving judgement, but like many of you I was lukewarm on invisible darlings on first listen. very keen now to hear what the back half of 7s has in store.

Glad to see him acknowledge the regurgitating of the old and the familiar. I assume a direct response to my posts here. Even better to hear that he's putting this style to bed with Hey Bog likely the turning point towards the new. Looking forward to hearing what follows that song.

Yeh that quote is very intriguing. I’ve really enjoyed all three singles but definitely nothing revelatory. Can’t wait to hear the back half of the record!

Rocking Horse Records (Brisbane store) had a couple copies so I picked one up. Never bought a record before it’s official release before haha. What a pleasant surprise! Also I think it’s only the 3rd time I’ve bought a vinyl before hearing the music first (albeit I’ve heard half the songs at this point). Was having a shitty stressful day but feeling blessed to buy my fav artist’s new album the evening before it officially drops. A few beers with my first listen tonight, hell yeah.

Sweeper’s Grin is one of the best AC-related songs going. It’s Hey Bog-esque, with driving bass and drums and a subtle but mesmerising melody. Those who were a bit underwhelmed by the likes of The Musical and Darlings should really dig it.

Whole record is fantastic. Neurons is interesting and I haven’t fully formed an opinion yet (aside from the fact that I like it). Lips at Night really nice, an easy going listen, breathes well. The last song seems the weakest to me, it’s repetitive like Sweeper’s Grin but not as stimulating. I’m sure it will grow.

Sweeper's Grin starts like nearly identically to... is it Always You? Tuvin? Happy Singing Band? I can't put my finger on it but there's an 03/04/05 session that sounds so fucking similar... song is blowing my mind btw.

Also funny Avey brought up Saturday Night Fever in his recent 10 LPs interview, I've been obsessed with that album recently. We need more Bee Gees love in this century
