I abstain from listening to new stuff generally. But after having an absolutely shit month, TS2 feeling a lifetime away, and the cancellation of the EU tour, I thought I would give myself a treat and listen to that new performance of Genie's Open.

Holy shit, it is so beautiful. I need this song in my life permanently. The only other song from the next record I've heard is Kings Walk, but wow, I totally understand why everyone keeps saying it's gonna be an all-timer.

The silver jews verse is cool i guess, still doesn't beat the World Cafe recording though, that sounds MINT (which should get added to the boots list wink wink)

whole set was so good. prester john really does kick ass live and it was so cool to have a silver jews cover in the middle of genie's open, which they do so well live to begin with. loved hearing passer by too, one of the only skiffs songs i havent seen them play yet. and fucking bluish dude shit. that song works so well in the skiffs/skiffs 2 style. love panda's drums on that version. cannot wait for this goddamn album to come out whenever it does

don’t think i’ve ever seen any discussion on crack box on here. how do u guys feel ab it?

i personally really like it. i think the fact that it’s all mini-disc recordings is a cool representation of their early years and the role that minidiscs played in their music and there’s a lot of really cool stuff on here. ice cream factory is the obvious highlight for me, i don’t think that song gets talked about enough. it feels so ahead of it’s time. i love the other ark era material but that song feels like an early glimpse at their later work while also feeling like a culmination of all the stuff they had done beforehand. those synths at the end and avey’s vocals/lyrics remind me of spirit but that static rhythm and the way it builds up reminds me of their danse/hollindagain stuff.

was thinking the other day ab how cool it would be to get another compilation like this but i’d want them to do it in the same way they did crack box. like it doesn’t just feel like a demos compilation, the whole mini disc thing makes it feel like it serves more of a purpose. i don’t ever see them doing deluxe versions of albums and it’s not like they can just release all their demos and stuff on v/a compilations and stuff. really itching to hear the ark version of winter wonderland and sponge luke and stuff like that. makes you wonder how much stuff they’re sitting on that we don’t even know about.

The first half of Ice Cream Factory constantly feels like it's gonna burst into For Reverend Green. Is that the genealogy of FRG?

Crackbox is a nice compilation for "Ice Cream Factory," the freak out on "Do the Nurse," and early Young Prayer demos. Its cool/beautiful to see them develop their voice and craft as musicians.

I was hoping for some good Sung Tong artifacts, but nothing really grabbed me for what they chose for that era. There's a lot of good boots that are waaaayy better (Other Music show). Not sure why they chose those tracks, but I've been hoping for a volume 2 for ages.

My favourite side of crack box is the campfire songs stuff. It's really delicate and sweet and beautiful. Really different in character from the actual campfire songs album because it feels much closer and intimate. Noah sounds so young on Jungle Heat and Hey Friend. "Happy Birthday Abby" in De Soto De Son is so sweet, and connects the recording nicely to many other live eras, as Avey never stopped giving birthday wishes to his sister at shows.

Personal opinion: Heba Kadry’s work on Time Skiffs is the least interesting aesthetic contribution to an Animal Collective record. Rusty Santos, Scott Colburn, even Ben Allen—all produced singular records that have few analogs. There’s just no sonic evidence that Heba Kadry even touched the record—there’s no grit, no dirt, no mystery. And, ultimately, it’s boring AF.

The most charitable quality we might use to describe this mix is pleasant. I find that I have to tune my ears in such a way that I ignore the mix to enjoy the songs, which is antithetical to how I would approach literally every other Animal Collective output. One of their instruments is aesthetic space. They play with it so well, even in the records that are often scorned (CHz, PW, etc.). The Time Skiffs mix just seems apropos of the times: Hyperreal yet substance-less, well-to-do liberal mindedness ensconced in an atmosphere of guilt, a kind of cynical piety that's too depressive to be effective; harmless and devoid of character, uber individualistic under a guise of collectivism, clear and muddy, thick yet airy, the list goes on... it's like the mix tries to be this inclusive safe space that turns out feeling like a playpen inside a modern Starbucks interior. There's no where to even sit! It's supposed to be inviting but is itself the machine in form that the invitation for inclusivity as such defends against.

Image

Although the 'animal' of this record is 'human' (which was also the talisman of PW?), this human is expressly both on-the-ground and neurotically dissociative. It's a kind of "let's get back to the basics that we never were" feel. Dads meeting up at Starbucks on a Saturday morning, glancing at the Bob Marley CD for sale at the cash register, thinking about how "we were the good news"...
