Re: TS2 looking at a late 2023 release. I wonder at what point AC would seriously consider leaving the major indie label situation and choosing something a bit more "homemade" again à la Paw Tracks. The business competition with each other as solo artists, not to mention with their own major releases, has to be wearing thin on them.

Autumn for TS2 seems like the most likely situation. Maybe fit in this Schrödinger's EP before the year closes? Probably not knowing their current situation. Feels crazy that we might still be waiting for some of these tracks in 2024.

I think after this mess, it'll probably be a while until we see new music as a whole group again. Focusing on solo stuff for a couple of years sounds like a nice palette cleanser. The idea of a new Deakin record is especially exciting.

Vinyl is a staggering waste of resources. A total joke.

Given how the live music industry is more or less in shambles at this point (and the money being made from that is just not on the table)... is selling physical media (records, since CD's have waned in popularity, plus people are WAY more likely to allow themselves to be gouged by the label by buying a new LP that costs $38 than a CD that costs the same) their main revenue source now?

It really sucks that releases are probably extra held up from record plants. I'm just trying to think of the alternative from a label perspective - just release things digitally on bandcamp and have ten people buy the digital album while everyone else streams?

I feel you about the waste of resources though. I have a lot of records but majority of them are second hand. meaning it's crap that was already sitting there anyway

personal opinion - more than $15 for a record fuckin sucks

hard to think AC is less interested in consistent predictable label help / cash flow than trying to get more music out into the world at this point. i think they've come to terms with what being with Domino means regarding their album cycles.

TS2 being a Q3 or Q4 release doesn't surprise me... i think i predicted this in the Avey thread with the imminence of Avey and maybe Panda dropping solo albums, and while some remarked solo records wouldn't impact the AC album schedule, it's clear from the latest podcast that this isn't the case, and Domino wants to spread out AC-related material...

the wait for TS2 will feel a little bit easier to stomach if we get a Panda record before then as well.

same, yeah all the other things i've been looking forward to have recently gotten positive updates (zelda, new hayao miyazaki, succession, venture bros) whereas AC is the only thing that has gotten a discouraging update lol oh well

Why are none of us talking about the fact that he said 26 songs?? I thought it was 18 that they initially had? Are we missing another eight songs? Do we reckon that includes some of the other MBV songs and maybe stuff like Brown Thrasher?

ya if they have 17 songs left after TS, then i'd hope we get a few songs at least in the first half of 2023 and the full meal in Q4...

i'd be sooooooooo curious to be a fly on the wall hearing them argue about which songs belong where, and who's been wanting more songs on the LP vs. Avey who seems to want to cut them up into smaller releases... maybe it's 3 vs 1 actually, haha. I would imagine Geo and Avey have the strongest opinions on this sort of thing.

I assume that the Music Box songs were a part of that group of 26. Time Skiffs and the remaining songs they've been playing live adds up to 17 tracks. If we tally those up with the MBV tracks (and keep in mind that Prester John was a combination of Who Knows? and a song Noah wrote), you get 24 songs

Seems realistic that there's either another song like Strung With Everything that we haven't heard, or just a song they never played live that didn't make it out of the demo stage, like half of the MBV tracks

Is there a reason they couldn't record Gem & I remotely? Or is it just because they didn't want it on TS. Strung strikes me as a more difficult song to do remotely

I'm so certain they just weren't done with Gem n I and strangers. It just makes sense. They are both so different from 2019 to 2021. Gem and I atleast has the harmonies that really fill it out into being a full song and a better performed chorus. Strangers is just completely different. I need studio Gem and I right now. I don't give a shit if I don't like it. I can't keep listening to these people talking over it. The chorus will prob sound better on studio since I can actually hear what they are trying to do and it not just being a mesh of what the shitty venue PAs are allowing to come out of the speaker. Let's do it again!

I feel like there are some good silver linings here.

i like that it will give Time Skiffs more of its own space to grow, there is so much in there that can continue to be noticed and felt over the next several months that would be stopped early (to some extent) if the new album was released sooner!!

and with the next record, i think more space in between it actually being released and now will somehow have a very positive effect on the individual and shared energies of the songs!!

yea i agree i’d like skiffs 2 to feel like a “sequel” to skiffs. also these new songs are just so fucking special that i don’t feel like waiting. i know i always say this but magicians is the best song they’ve written in years and the other material is really good too. i like it even more than skiff as of rn which is saying a lot because i absolutely love skiffs

man this is fucking me. but add gem and I to that tier also
Part of the thing that blows about this is that we (as in the band and that fans) all know how good these songs are... I'm not as into Defeat as others but after it's released they gotta pass some bull in the Geneva convention or whatever the fuck to not allow someone to sit on a song with such monumentality...

I meant to say bill but I am keeping bull

totally. it's a through line to a previous time in our lives (pre pandemic if nothing else). when music box happened i was just out of college, first real job, still living with parents. now i'm living on my own in a different state, new job, new friends, new pets, etc. once this stuff finally releases it'll be as if that connection to an older part of ourselves finally dies and that previous era of our lives will be even more of a distant memory. probably subconsciously has something to do with why some people are half jokingly like 'i never want this stuff to be released' because when we finally hear the studio versions of these, the songs 'die' in a sense because we lose the mystery of what the songs could be, now that they are set in stone, and an old chapter of our lives closes

Hate how true this is considering how much comfort these songs brought to my ears the past three years during the pandemic -- really turbulent periods in my life -- and there's been great changes to it, so have the songs themselves; it's truly a rare experience. Once these come out I can't wait to process the reflection and finally sort on move on with those feelings, perhaps acknowledging something new in their finalized state. Really happy to have followed through with everything this band has done honestly. I only got into them a few years ago and it feels like I've known them forever at this point - I really didn't expect to feel this strongly attached to a band and their music.

seeing all these comments ab listening to the music box versions is so sweet. i didn’t really get super into anco until 21 so i havent had to wait nearly as long as y’all, but it’s so heart warming to see u guys get so emotional over a collection of songs that hasn’t even been officially released yet. there’s something so powerful about this band dudes. shoutout everyone who’s had to wait longer than i have.

i guess on that note i’m really happy to have gotten into them when i did. i don’t like when people call skiffs a comeback, i really did hz and panting with but i feel so lucky to have gotten into them at a time when all four of them are together and while they’re releasing/performing this particular batch of songs. something about these skiffs two songs really resonates with me too, like in a classic anco way. i don’t mean that it sounds like any of their early work but it’s just got that warmth to it yk. idk i’m getting emotional i’m so glad this forum exists

cool to hear from the perspective of a very new fan. it's exciting for me to think about that rush of listening to their whole discography for the first time with allll this body of work to get through. i became a fan in '07 and already felt like there was wayyy too much to catch up on.

and it really took years for me to form positions on some of their records... for instance it took me 10 years but Ark went from one of their weakest to one of their best albums. Danse went from worst to first to somewhere in the middle. MPP went from disappointment to wonder in the span of 6 years... Strawberry Jam has always kinda hung on as top 2, but Feels and Sung Tongs have challenged that at times... with the passage of time these albums speak differently to us, and it's exciting to know you're just beginning this journey, and the sacredness of these records will change over time.

yea i’m definitely looking forward to the roles each album plays in my life changing and whatnot. i’m at the point right now where to some extent or another i adore everything i’ve heard them do but i cant wait for these songs to be given new meaning by my experiences and whatnot.

My guess is that if it’s release as a full ‘’offical’ album then Domino would want them to tour it, promo etc the full shabang. And it’s definitely full-LP worthy with Defeat and all the other bangers.
But its like 5 years old, and they’ve just toured all this material and I reckon they probably want to move on- solo Avey, Reset has come out, Panda had new tunes….
So if they go for a couple of EP’s they can be more lowkey and not have to go full promo and use next year for other things
BUT the big shame is that it’s some of their best and epic-est material
