This album is coming back in a big way for me right now. PJ was a victim of being overplayed at release but now i'm pretty happy going start to finish without feeling any desire to skip a song. It's a really great release, even the songs I wasn't crazy about during the boot era hit for me.

agreed I love it a lot, really virtually no bad moments or stretches for me, and Prester, Cherokee, WGB and sorta Passer are all basically jazz standards tier

It's very consistent and comfortably their best since MPP, for me, and nowhere near as impactful as anything before that. I accept that in middle age I may be less susceptible to having my life and outlook changed by a record, but I find plenty of other art more paradigm shifting than Time Skiffs, and I still find their pre-2009 records more invigorating and continually inspiring. It's a good position to be in and this isn't a criticism of what they've achieved here, especially under the circumstances.

When I organize my Bandcamp library by Most Played, Crestone still comes in above Skiffs. Longer track list and one extra year. But still … not sure what this says about either project and/or me.

The great Pharoah Sanders transitioned today. His song Astral Traveling was sampled in the original MBV version of Royal and Desire.

If you're not familiar, I do hope you take a chance to explore his music.
Tauhid, Karma, Thembi, Izipho Zam, Pharoah (1977), Journey to the One, The Trance of Seven Colors are all stellar albums. Not to mention his playing with John and Alice Coltrane.
I've been playing his music all day and trying to understand his spirit more. He was a giant in mine and many other's musical world and really exhaled his heart through his horn.

Definitely, he'll live on through his music, i'm sure. I've heard a few tribute shows on college radio, NTS, and various jazz IG accounts I follow. It makes me really happy to hear a new generation of fans get into his world. Hope you find something good.

Yeah! What an image and sound. Saxophone, harmonium, air, and natural reverb. Be sure to give a dollar to your local busker. Good karma :- ))

Appreciating the Pharoah Sanders talk in here. The day he passed I spent the morning walking around my neighborhood while listening to Karma, easily one of the best pieces of music I've ever experienced. A top 10 album, so beautiful it brings me to tears.

But also I came in here to talk about Time Skiffs, and I just wanna make sure that everyone has been listening to this album on a variety of different sound systems. There's so many hidden sounds it's insane. I just listened to Cherokee on my phone speaker and there are still new details I hadn't heard before. The mixing and mastering on this album is really something else.

Brilliant! I would’ve had a stroke. Check out the new Mamaleek record, Diner Coffee, for some gnarly Twin Peaks-inspired psychedelia. Have you heard Xiu xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks?

Had a bit of break with TS over the last couple of months. Just re-listened to the whole thing yesterday and it is still just so so awesome. It feels like a classic AC record already. Love how it is maintaining its shine.

I love the songs on Skiffs. I just hate the production. It’s too clean for my taste. I also hate the fact that it was recorded remotely. C’mon. You can hear it. You can feel it. It’s ice cold. It’s color-by-numbers. The mixing is boring AF. They should’ve recruited Matthias Glava.

Unfortunately the production has made the album my least liked Anco album, I think calling it bland is being generous. Usually the album and live show give two different and amazing experiences, here I'm simply bored listening to the album, such a shame.

Yeah... I have moments where I can withhold my judgements and enjoy the mix. Generally speaking, though, the production is devoid of life. People speak about not being able to hear that it was recorded remotely but to me it's so obvious. Such a bummer they didn't just hold off on recording until they recorded the TS2 stuff. I would have dug them just releasing more solo material during the heights of the pandemic.

Same. I've tried not to put my opinion out there since it's not a positive one, but I totally agree. The material itself mostly great, but the recording and production styles don't even begin to serve the songs. Super boring and lifeless. I don't how people can call this a classic or "the best since MPP" or whatever. This clearly isn't the album they wanted to make.

No love lost, though. It's not their fault and I'm still super psyched for Skiffs 2 and the upcoming solo projects.

Least liked AC album is... a statement. You think this sounds more lifeless than Painting With? I can barely get through that whole album from start to finish

they wouldn't have released it if they felt this way. say what you want about your own preferences on the production, but don't assume that the band wanted to make something different and settled for this

I personally don't have any qualms with the production. maybe the mixing on PJ could be better and bring the vocals out more, but I think most of the tracks (especially Passerby, WGB and R&D) sound glorious

I was curious if Strung With Everything was purely a remote creation but PB revealed in an interview that they played it a little bit in rehearsal January 2020. Even then it must have been a nightmare getting on the same page with that remotely

I mean, they've pretty much said it straight up. They wanted to record it live, but couldn't, so they had to do it remotely. They "accepted" the fact that Noah would be playing to a click track. Dave has said that he didn't enjoy the process because it was so similar to how he made Cows. Sounds a lot like settling to me.

But anyway, we all love this band and want more music so let's leave it at that.

I think we're just reading different things onto what the band has said. I hear, they didn't get to follow the process they wanted but they are happy with the result. Others hear, they didn't get to follow the process they wanted and they aren't fully happy with the result.

I get where you're coming from, when they announced they had done it remotely I was really disappointed. But it's really hard to say if the album would be better or worse. To me, they've made way more sterile sounding things in person before, so it's kinda a moot point for me? Maybe it's not as good as the Time Skiffs we would have gotten, it's hard to say, but it probably would have been a year later anyway and you know how much we all hate waiting lol... Personally I love the album, I mean I take a few issues with it just from having listened to it so much... but it still hits pretty hard for me today.

i just keep coming back to cherokee. inching up my overall anco song rankings. that "stoop that you love" refrain is just so powerful to me. and i love the slinky vibe of the verses and overall structure. that "drop" is not quite "in the flowers" or level but is a top 5 anco drop (i initially put top 3 but then realized they have quite a few amazing song shifts that you could term "drops"). even if it's not, like, heavy on the percussion and more of a build - it feels like a drop and hits emotively like one.

seriously that stoop part is glorious! probably my favorite moment on the whole album. I get the production being a little bit lackluster compared to some of their other albums but the material on skiffs is so good that it doesn’t really affect my enjoyment of it. the production may be a bit lifeless but the songs themselves are so full of life that it makes up for it. glad they held off on recording magicians tho, that’s my favorite skiffs/skiffs 2 era song and i’m looking forward to hearing it the way they wanted it to. not sure how different it’s gonna sound from the blast sessions or when i saw them playing it since they’re presumably recording it live and i’m looking forward to that because i’m so in love with the versions i’ve heard.

The record is definitely like "on the grid" or whatever compared to them doing it together but I really have a hard time believing anyone on here could listen and immediately know they recorded it remotely without having known going in.
