Looking forward to feeling Danger vibes towards someone done day. So damn pretty. Feels like such a "mature" love song. And I haven't chilled with lyrics a ton but it's like the inverse of Selfish Gene maybe. Which is an anti love song love song (and my favorite forever)

The singles had me trippin like this album wasn't gonna be that good but WHAT. LIVING ON THE AFTER?? A new full blast car jam for late summer, yes sir. I do agree
Then again-- its better when an albums best songs aren't its singles. The surprise & reward of the gems within are what it's all about for me.

God Pete, idk what it is but your deep voice on Danger's chorus is absolutely perfect. Such a small little detail, makes all the difference, definitely a highlight for me at least.
Nice . Thank you . Some people find that tone sexy I guess , which is why I did it ofcourse ...
I don't usually sing in that register much , but it was fun to underpin Noahs range with the baritone vibes ... I like it on In My Body , where I used a sub octave pitch shift to add a third super low octave - that's my fave SB vox spot probably ....Everyday verses is menna be me thinkin I'm Lee Hazelwood
Buddy Holly does that low thing occasionally & I always loved it . Buddy Holly & the Crickets were one of my first music loves ....
So psyched for the love for "living..." I love it too , but not everyone loves that one . That was my attempt to get Noah to make peace with strings in Pop records : )
Plus some other jams by the late great Eddie Cochran as they used to call him . Both have killer intros too .
Here's a loop I considered too , but it has the same chord pattern as Danger & Whirlpool . Love that drum bounce though...
And some love for Lee
I wonder how he felt having Rolf Harris swoon over his voice....would like to have been a fly on the wall in the green room afterwards.....Lee was FUNNY .

Nice . Kraftwerk felt like they were around a few times . Some of the key parts had their frost on them straight away .
Taking the samples away from some gave the lp breathing space though & twisted thru some more contemporary / future present vibes . And also it would have crushed the charitable side of the lp to keep all of them . We're both donating a sizeable share of our royalties & publishing on RESETto Maps to help reset traumatised people. It was important that could amount to something substantial , and this was one way to help that . Have a beautiful weekend there xp
I didn't even think about the cost and the impact of the samples eating into your contributions there. Put it this way, nothing has been lost at this end and that breathing space you mention comes through really strong. One of my favourite aspects of the album, in fact, the samples hovering in your imagination like Will o' the Wisps.

yeah . we had that janky piano start then a loop of the first few bars with that brass phrase like it does before the vocal hits on this Temptations 'version'.... this whole song is out of tune with itself though . every instrument . I wouldna noticed cos I think it sounds awesome , but Noah noticed the piano is kinda hit so hard it sharpens the notes . We did an analysis at Black Sheep studio with Guilherme Goncalves & turns out the whole band is a out of tune ....... I love this song though . love that janky intro too....

Wait Noah doesn't like strings in pop songs? I can't believe that that's literally one my favourite things I tell ya. Don't talk - Beach Boys (can I even mention that here), Through my window/some day that place in time - the doopees, Pray them bars away, Jim O'Rourke's solo stuff. I'd say they're all some sort of pop
Had to link the doopees it's too good

This whole album is phenomenal. Panda & Sonic harmonising is beautiful. Danger is a classic. Simply beautiful. This takes me back to when I was 19 coming on here checking out everything related to Tomboy. Listening to every live shows and counting the new songs. Now I'm 30 with responsibilities and coming to this board and seeing all the love, and Sonic Boom himself still on here, makes me feel all tingly inside. Thanks for making beautiful art. Peace n’ love to all.

danger is so wild. something kinda crazy about it. his singing and the way its mixed is wild as hell. and the percussion, grooves all of that shit wow (and SB's low harmony fr)
its almost a whole new style of panda to me idk why. i mean a lot of this arguably is. its sooooorta Buoys-ish i guess but um ya idk. good job yal
its the crooning-est panda's been maybe? and its just so dreamy and direct. the hocketing bit is such a crazy cherry on top

and thanks sonic for all the amazing links so i have soemthing to spin when im trying not to burn thru Reset overly hard
funny you said that about strings in pop songs. its soooooo different to hear panda over that. this is a very shallow reference compared what yals influences are but i get a vampire weekend vibe from that track a lil. Closest precedent for that might be the tchaikovsky harp samples in Tropic but strings def feels different
so insane. the beat reminds me of Kinda Bonkers lol whoops (its much better than Bonkers >,>;;; )
and Everything's main arpeggiator sounds a bit like Anne Steel album synths. but shinier maybe

theres something weird and cool going on with the way the songwriting actually feels really old school and "classic" in a lot of ways, and then there's the old samples too, but it all sounds so new and shiny and bright with todays hi def sheen, its wild. turning in on itself in a temporal spiral (like the ones in Vertigo)

Today I've been finding myself singing the chorus for Danger numerous times.
I visited my parents yesterday. My dad is 71 but a huge music freak and has been since he was a kid. I played him several songs from the album and he guessed every main sample "Denise! Save the Last Dance by The Drifters!" he's usually dismissive about sampling but felt like there was a lot of love for these songs and was happy to know that royalties were given to who deserved it. It was nice seeing the old man listen to something a little more contemporary and enjoy it.
Before I drove home I stopped at the niagara gorge which is just a few blocks down from the house I grew up in. I walked down to this fishing platform next to hydroelectric power plant and on the way down played the album on my bluetooth speaker. I took my camera and got a nice picture that captured the sun setting on the power plant. It was a nice summer evening.

Thanks for sharing onebraineno! Sounds and looks like it was a wonderful day.
Have been in Amsterdam for the last few days and it’s been a real treat walking around in this summer heat accompanied by this album. Such a soundtrack for discovery and taking in joy around me.
Would’ve been beautiful to hear this version of Everything! I have a certain love for songs like that where it’s out of tune with itself. Like mathematically it shouldn’t be working, but it’s even lovelier that a song works so well despite clashing tones. Feels human too.
Also was a treat to hear it’s mostly you on Whirlpool, Pete! Your vocals on the album put me in another dimension

In my Body and Whirlpool are like a beautiful mysterious dream you have, and then Danger is you waking up to your real life but the feeling of the dream still lingers.

I love all of the latin-style percussion sounds. i feel like the Portuguese influence is really coming out in noah’s recent songwriting, is it just me? i thought that about the madrid set too.
maybe pete already said this, but are those real guiros etc? thinking specifically of danger. did noah record any live percussion?

I know he likes "what's goin' on" so , he clearly he does dig it really & I know he likes Good Vibrations for example .... I guess we had a convo about 'to strings or not to strings' in general , in relation to rock/pop music, and he had severe reservations . He said the same thing about fuzz one time . I love those sorta debates .... that's him playing the fuzz on my vox starstream in Go On with me doing the wah seperately

Awesome . Perfect .Really psyched yr dad dug it . No one younger remembers , but save the Last dance was a massive hit , I believe , worldwide . Was a dancehall closeout standard.
Denise was a big hit in the USA but not sure there was a UK version that was a hit . Blondie had a massive hit with it in '77 & one of the first singles I ever bought (and still have ) I think I heard the Rainbows version while touring in the USA in the 90's .

Wow . Must be nice . A-dam in summer is amazing . Yeah , I don't mind out of tune or janky chords either if it has an energy . Noah was mildly disturbed by it though . I guess if you hear perfect pitch , it's a different sensation . I think my own personal feeling is that not always knowing all the rules of music (just imagine many people believe music has rules ) allows you to break them successfully . There are some intrinsic inherent truths in music , no question , but not rules. John Cage told us that music is merely organised sound.
That barky Guiro is a South American frog looking guy . It's a fairly common Guiro . I bought 3 Guiros for the LP as I hoped it was gonna be a feature . A silver pill shaped one with a metal comb , a wooden rasta coloured sorta tubular fish shaped guy & the lil froggy guy . Sounds actually just like a real toad . Noah played the Guiros . Jammed thru each track once , then I picked & edited from his best strokes . On Danger he did the two push-me-pull me guiros .
I think we we're just feeling out the territory on the arrangements as we went , so everything was just played thru & I then took in back to Sintra and edited for a couple of months, refining the dynamic changes & the little rhythmic details.Trying to have a propulsion thru the tracks that sort of laddered you through . Noah played everything on Danger except the Moonweed keys & the arrangement/orchestration of the sounds is so magical .I think it's the only one where the claps are electronic , the other tracks is us two .
Love these digestion comments ...... Thank you . The initial interaction with a record is important for sure , from the sleeve on in , but the really interesting thing to me is how it resonates with your life experiences afterwards.
Have a beautiful Sunday out there xp

Interesting reading and great to get that perspective on the creation.
Just wanted to share a couple of things that have chimed with me and by coincidence, your comments about the dynamic changes and propulsion are exactly what I was going to mention.
I've been really struck by how the songs develop and build in a way that reminds me of 'tracky' house music. They have many repeating and recurring elements but they're not 'repetitive' as to ever go flat. The songs do feel very 'sequenced' but more that they're so chunky and like 'efficient'. I don't mean that word in a critical way at all. Maybe it's a shit descriptor. Maybe effective is better but it's not just that, it's that they feel so economical. There's always just enough to keep you hooked and wanting more.
A lot of the keyboard lines and pads/strings (like on Everyday) seem to kick in just when you want that little bit extra, and you feel like the song moves into a different mode. And then when it shifts back, you really enjoy that change, too. There are loads of moments like that, too many to mention and probably loads too subtle for me to have picked up yet, but it's definitely something I can feel and really enjoy. The keyboard parts also feel as much about rhythm as melody, like in Danger. There's 'nothing to it' (on the surface) but that one ringing note adds a euphoric urgency.
I could go on but that's enough for now.
