No way. This is sick. listening rn
edit: this is fucking awesome haha. it would be so sick if he did a whole dub of TS. I like the percussion in his remix (I haven't listened to the original song in a minute, is the percussion that's really prominent in the beginning present in the album version of the song?)
Also the instrumental makes this song sound like a Clash song from Sadinista or Combat Rock

remix is weird. it sounds just like the original with some of the vocals chopped out. not different enough to excite me :-/
Same, it's alright but not different enough and hearing stuff like LOBBY and LOTTERY with loads of delay but without context is weird

I love it. Heaps of stuff brought way forward in the mix that was a little hidden like deak's humming and the vocoder "stoop that you love" part. The new percussion hits just right.

I fuckin love that remix. Feels like exactly what I need after listening to this song probably more than any other Skiffs song (live at least).
Also getting to hear some of the peripheral autotune stuff more upfront is so sick. Love the rhythm, love the vocal fuckery

i'm not sure if "minimalist remixes" are a thing, but i'm usually a fan of these subtle re-imaginings... just enough shifts in element-interplay that get me zoning in on different aspects of a song.
i'm not going to say i like it more than the original, but i've replayed this remix wayyy more than i've ever replayed the original. i really dig the vibe

I'll also recommend his work with Linton Kwesi Johnson, and the LKJ in Dub albums he did. They're basically remixes/dubs of LKJ's stuff to similar effect (although less vocals in the remixes). one I like a lot
Reggae Fi Peach - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrDfELIu8Lw

edit: here is one that has some dubbed out vocals in it
Sonny's Lettah (Anti-sus Poem) (original)
Iron bar Dub (dub)

remix is great. brings out more of the mix. original mix sounds a bit flat and im always straining to here the autotune harmonies and bassline. remix scratches that itch for me

^ No kidding, was just listening to skiffs and this one hit me hard.
Also the outro to Cherokee fucks me up each time
I was stoked to see them last week, but.. so it goes. Grateful anyway as the record has been a gift that keeps on giving lately.
get well guys

Extremely listenable album. I been listening to it here and there recently and it absolutely flies by. Feels somewhat light but that defines its place in their frickin oeuvre. Some real peak moments, too. Every song is a good one. Very cohesive and well balanced. Yes, I feel like there's that PJ into SWE longueur but it's OK. I will endure.

ya this thing is holding up well. Been on the road recently and its a pretty good way to spend an almost-hour. Cherokee ---> Passer-by is the highlight one-two that I either wait for everytime, or sometimes skip straight too if I only want a bit of it.
But like DS continues to kinda stun me. The "chorus" part is maybe the one thing that for sure is more interesting/beautiful to me than the live version. Whole opening trio still hits well and then SWE is like the start of this whole other thing almost.
Walker is in remission since that had grown so much by the time of the actual LP freebirding but still hits... that and We Go Back feel like these quick, lighter moments on a relatively meaty thing.
R&D is fine.
Were def hitting that period of time where you can actually see how an album sounds and feels more quickly than the initial freebird and then the period that follows where you've actually almost burnt out on it and um ya, its safe(r) now to say that I like the way this thing turned out. let it b known

Dragon Slayer is unfortunately one that still kind of bums me out a bit. Its grown on me a little since I first heard it, but overall it definitely seems to be a case of the band hearing a different song than the one I heard in the boots. Feel sort of the same way about Car Keys, but that one has some more cool stuff going for it in the studio that makes up for it (panda nailing the vocals/the way they handled the outro, so sick.) Overall I don't think any of the songs really surpass their live iterations except for R&D, which I think they kind of perfected. The issue for the rest of the album doesn't really lie in the production at all, it's more to do with the energy of the performances I think. But that usually happens with their recorded work. Recording remotely probably didn't help either. But overall still a v good album, SWE and Cherokee are probably my two favs at the moment. Agree that it generally feels a bit "lighter" for them but once you accept it on those terms it's quite easy to enjoy and appreciate.

my only hiccup with TS remains "Passer-by." i've just not been able to get into it. the rest of the album flows by so nicely with such wise grace and careful persistence. a great companion.

don't seem all that "light" to me honestly. Feels like their heaviest main LP since SJ or ODDSAC...and if maybe I don't include TR which is just its whole own mood. SWE, Walker and WGB are the only songs that could be construed as "happy" or upbeat. The rest isn't necessarily sad and, not-happy isn't necessarily not light but um yeah, idk, the instrumentals, lyrics, vibe... all seem a little more "serious" than most of the 10's stuff.

It's light not in a frivolous or carefree way, but in how restrained it is. The vocals in particular are especially polite compared to anything else they've recorded. As I say, I still like it and more so than anything since MPP, but less than everything before that.
I could put it down to not being in the same room but I accept it's also a conscious decision on their part, not just a product of circumstance.

Yeah Stan that's exactly it. I was trying to be optimistic by putting the blame on the circumstances of the recording, but you're probably right that it may not have been much different otherwise. I feel like with Dave's singing in particular, he's made it a habit lately to sound like he's falling asleep in the vocal booth. Even the more restrained, whispery vocals on Feels had a fiery passion to them. Lately it's like he's reluctant to emote too much in the studio or something. Which I mean, when you listen to SWE or PJ it's obvious he can still bring it when he wants to. Cows had the same issue.

Just so that ya'll don't think I'm being too negative, I listened to some of this album today and I just want to reiterate that Cherokee is such an undeniable winner I don't even care what version I'm listening to. Sure the album version isn't necessarily my favorite, but the bones of the song, the lyrics, arrangement and structure, are all such slam dunks that it's impossible for me to ever not enjoy it. Just great song composition imo. Thinking my current TS power ranking is something like
1 Cherokee
2 SWE
3 R&D
4 PJ
5 WGB
6 Passer-by
7 Walker
8 CK
9 DS

My top 5 pretty much all seem like "perfect" songs that all really "hit" on the reg and the middle duo aint shabby either. last 2 SUCK (jk)
basically Avey just in a really good mode for me in general in terms of actual songwriting. all 4 are good in terms of actual playing tho
and also some of that is cuz my fave panda and Deakin song(s) r apparently gonna be on Skiffs 2 and not 1 and thats... exciting.
And then like Avye's technically best song (D'feet) also aint wow

Passer-By is the only track that doesn't quite work for me. Feels to me like it is screaming out for another element of something(?). Not quite sure what. Still enjoy it though, just not a track I particularly look forward to.

I'll jump on the bandwagon. Before I list them I'll add that this album's definitely settled into one of my favorites by the band. I think it totally rivals in enjoyability of any of their albums, especially this time of the year. I'll say that these rankings are pretty close then, so anyway:

Car Keys
WGB
Walker
Slayererer (Soul Star)
Prester John
Passerby
Cherokee

Oh yeah, all the time. That's why Dragon Slayer is so low for me, feel like that song was perfect in 2019 and every change they've made since then has transformed it into something I'm much less into.

I still love Passer-by though. My only gripe with it is that some of the instrumentation they added in the studio version makes the song feel more minor and foreboding, which is not really the vibe I got before and it's been hard for me to get used to it. And to some degree I agree with Hellomark about Dragon Slayer, the 2019 version was really great and I miss some aspects about it, but I still really appreciate the new version, especially because of the killer drumming.

Weird to rank SWE low, cuz it has all the hallmarks of a classic AC track, but it just doesn't do it for me. The chorus going on forever doesn't help lol.
