Enjoyed Nashville so much last night. Quickly realized it was gonna be very much the same sort of set they did in '19 and '21 but its super refined now (maybe it always was) and I haven't seen them since '18 music box so this was long needed

a few thing before I start to forget:
-l'rain seemed mad at us. maybe it was nothing but she seemed exasperated...we did miss an applause once but it was after a really pretty song and they didn't fully stop playing, going into anther song AC style and she started cracking up that no one applauded. But I no joke had tears streaming down my face from the prior song. If it's already released I'll find it cuz damn. So messed up she interpreted our speechlessness that way.

then later I think she was hushing us during a song, and I think they thought it was awkward that the audience tried to help their synth dude do a clap loop badly.

But besides THAT...band was incredible. I just feel like the lead-singer thought we kinda sucked sadly lol.

-love how most of the skiffs 1 songs now have pretty fleshed out intro or outros to the point that DS, and esp Car Keys have almost totally new "parts". Those songs are like the center of the Skiffs live tracks

-so glad songs like Magicians, Defeat and Genies are big staples rn. In an alt universe, they stay curios of the lost '19 show era and Music Box... but them and so many other new songs seem like live staples now in the same way MPP (or SJ/Feels) songs do as well

-I wanna say I'm bored with Flowers and No More Runnin (speaking of live staples) but those being THE staples from MPP still feels like a good meshy vibe with Skiffs stuff and they're played so damn well. NMR. is a little more groovy now and the bass is booming.

-I didn't get [spoiler we never thought we'd get] but its cool because im seeing at least 2 more times in May.

-new songs I wanted and didn't get was: Passerby, WGB, Stride, Zodiac. But again, 2 more shows at least. I weirdly didnt mind not getting Prester. Cherokee might have been Skiffs 1 highlights

-Genies feels so right as encore intro... it fr feels Brother Sport-y tier in terms of what it brings to a set.

-Defeat sounds better than ever. Incredible. Tears streaming down my cheeks at beginning of 3rd part. That now feels like the climax to me instead of the "deFEAT, oh no, not now" which is more like the outro now. Middle section is incredible. Just amazing. I could tell a lot of the audience knew the unreleased songs but not sure, but either way, you feel people really in tune with this one. Like it hits people even their first time...

But ya so glad its a staple and they're just doing longer sets to allow for it.

Applesauce is heroic. anyway, this was amazing. Ranks up there with first PW tour show when I heard Alvin Row first and with the Music Box shows too. Amazing. And reaffirming in that I dont even slightly regret going crazy and buying 4 more tickets for may shows. I should see them this summer to shoot.

anyway, #rant but my take on the show. o and I really like my voice memo "bootleg" I took. You can hear that its in my pocket most of the time and for some reason I cut off very end of main set and start re-recording for encore, but man its honestly not bad. Maybe not quite good enough to share, but I will fr boot the Kansas and Denver shows now doing this but with a lil more effort. I love being able to listen back to my specific show, incredible.

p.s. some of these transitions are insane. Car Keys into NMR, damn

Yeah L'Rain is great, they really brought the energy in DC. but yeah Ben (I think that's his name, the sax/synth guy who plays on Defeat) seemed disappointed and shook his head when the crowd couldn't get the rhythm of (the song I now know as Kill Self) lol, it was so cringey all around. Didn't notice anything from the rest of the band but I was too busy vibing out, their set is really good and they seemed to mix it up when I saw them again in NJ. I'm a fan. Only thing is NJ crowd didn't really seem to care at all from what I noticed lol

I think the shushing they do a lot, if I'm not mistaken. The intro to one of their last songs in Brooklyn was her shushing us til it got real quiet in the room. And she does dramatic laughs a lot for her songs... but who knows, this far into the tour, some emotions may start flying more

All of this stuff happened with L'Rain in Chicago—shushing, laughing, difficult applause timing, some fake guitar playing theatrics—and all of that with an ENTHUSIASTIC crowd reception, so I definitely think it's just part of their stage deal (though the looping is obviously a practical issue if the crowd can't do it). They were a real highlight for me, think this tour will have exposed them to a lot of the right kind of people.

People were really having a good time at MoCa, it was really pretty disappointing to see how the crowd was dead in NJ and so many people were talking during their set. I do think they had good energy and I didn't feel they were disappointed in us personally, but I can see that maybe being misinterpreted. The sound is never gonna be that good for an opener though, and my friend saw them open for Black Midi in November and he said they were really good then too and it was roughly the same set.

I interpreted the off beat clap and stuff as them being playful in DC. Seemed like they were having fun and messing with us

I'll take a stab at the Nashville setlist for posterity. Hopefully someone can help fill the gaps.
Slayer
Cherokee
Flowers
Magicians
Gem and I
- (here's where it's a bit hazy)
Soul Cap
Car Keys
No More Runnin
Strung
-
Defeat
Royal
Applesauce
-e-
Genies
Chores
Rev Green

Really wild incredible show. Not the hugest fan of the sound at that venue but it made for some pretty awesome (in the classic sense) moments for parts. It felt like a really boomy festival PA in a really echoy space where the kick drum and vocals dominate the mix. All volume with little nuance. The bass guitar didn't have much definition and the hurdy gurdy mostly didn't stand a chance. But it did have an insane effect for certain songs. Like Defeat's 3rd section was this incredible wash of sound bordering on aggressive and Strung's closing section hit ridiculously hard. Cherokee's ending was gnarly too.

Overall a minor gripe though once my ears got adjusted. The energy of the venue during the SJ songs at the end was out of control. So much fun, great setlist. Chores was a big surprise, and Avey hitting that Re Green chord right after was just epic. Been digging Soul Cap more and more too, the lyrics are very fun now, definitely looking forward to the studio version.

The vibe with L'Rain was very positive by the end. She played an amazing set, kind of a hard one to jump into right away, but her reception felt nothing but warm

yeah, your setlist is right. The gaps are just improvy seeming jams if anything. Car Keys and NMR had huge jams at the end of each.

Ya and to be clear, I felt like the reception of L'Rain was great and semi normal. Its just had a unique experience of feeling like she specifically, and a couple other dudes seemed visibly annoyed. Not a big deal, could be nothing, or unrelated to the audience entirely. Either way, they owned and got a new fan out of me and I'm sure plenty others.

Their final song was insane (beating up guitars, screaming etc)

but yeah this show was so sick Maybe top 3 live AC, been seeing since '12. Never been to this venue before so interesting to here yr take on their usual mixing/acoustic and liked how insane Chores felt. A freak-out right at the end (but honestly We Tigers maybe would be too much in this venue). I thought it was sick tbh. Will be interesting to hear them thru different live mixes

Also super proud of my shitty little no effort boot. I kind of want to look into getting a real mic for KS/CO shows. This community is good about recording, but if I started contributing then there'd be a good bit more boots out there.

L'Rain seemed tired at first just going straight into the music with no greeting. Later she said it felt like they moved heaven and earth to get there or something like that. Must've been a long drive from Columbus. Tail end of the tour too so they were probably kinda burnt

Can't blame them. AC's route was pretty wacky this time around(VA, Philly, West Mass, Brooklyn, DC, Boston, NJ...), they zig zagged pretty hard there lol.

Gotta say New Applesauce is the surprise hit for me. The energy as it washed over me live was just so unique and it was just so fuckin melancholic, when the song is already a rush of anxieties. It's just now hitting me and This skiff'd out version was like having a moment at a fireworks night down at the boardwalk by the shore or something. All the noise and blinking lights around you and you're just fucked up. This rendition is just so amazing.

god goin through a lot of the posts now that im not abstaining and ya man, this Applesauce is beautiful. Such gorgeous guitar work, and the melodic tweaks feel great. Makes me wanna hear even more CHZ on this tour

Avey's guitar on this and Strung With E make me wonder if he's gonna transition back to guitar main sing lord knows Deakin or Geo can do bass parts.

Can Geo do bass parts? Like have we ever seen Geo on a string instrument? Genuinely curious.

I meant bass synth* for both Deak and Geo, but yeah Geo has played bass on a pedal bass thing-y esp during chz. All 4 of them being fully synth/keys proficient and most guitar proficient gives them a lot of flexibility..

Figured he had proficiency, just didn't know it was enough for stage performance. Interesting about CHz, I thought that was Deakin on that bass thing but that makes a lot more sense.

Looking back Royal was a sleeper highlight of Nashville. It was so gauzy and I was pleased that they played with a lazier rhythm like the 2019 vers. Had that kind of fever dream sensation reminiscent of the 04 boots. It was more like the unhinged and loose version of AnCo from the 00s, cathartic to witness. Just realized I'm still processing it

That's sick they're so committed to Defeat every single night. Must really like playing it. Like you could fit 3 old songs into that slot easy. But they don't fuck around.

Anyone else think(or hope!) that they'll add some more outdoor US shows in August? Unless a lot of time is going to be set aside for Skiffs 2 stuff then I can't imagine Noah coming all the way over here for two shows in different parts of the country a few weeks apart. Also personally have been dying to see them at an outdoor venue.

Are most of these venues they are playing smaller than when you all saw them last? Paradise in Boston is tiny and it was amazing. I wonder if this will be the last time we get to see them in small venues (due to covid and the ebb and flow of their popularity)...pretty special...

in chicago, they played the same venue they played on the sung tongs tour and a fairly equivalent one to what they played on the painting with tour, not including the special tiny show at the empty bottle for the venue's 25th anniversary. the shows keep selling out so i wonder why they don't play a larger venue but i'm not complaining.

i think it's just a demand thing, so many artists are touring now and there aren't a lot of venues available
