yeh, it does that.
i think part of it is the fact that it is long enough that you really have to dedicate yourself to a listen. so you're immediately engaged and emotionally available/ready for the song.

Didn't Deakin play it in a blast radio session and confirm that it, Kingsway, Gem and I, Genies Opening, and some others will be on a second LP? Seems we will be getting a studio Defeat fam.

Think a lot of y'all need to mentally prepare yourselves for lines like 'praise for the underdog' and 'we were the good news' to be sang at room temperature

Is that really falsetto tho? Doesn't really sound like what I'd consider falsetto but I am a musical laymen. I feel like he's just like...singing in a more soothing way on the record then he does live where he's kinda belting it a lil more.

It sounds kind of falsetto-y to me, though it'd be pretty much impossible to know unless Noah confirmed himself. But yeah you got the high pitched, breathy, kind of "fake" sounding, and mellow yet strained thing going on in his voice on PJ that is usually characteristic of falsetto

he breaks into falsetto a little bit, especially on the higher notes. but the lower stuff isn't falsetto, just more gently and smoothly sung
i do really like it but i wonder why they went that direction with the studio version. panda can easily hit those notes in his full voice

Laughing thinking about him singing like that on car keys
I think car keys vocally will sound like
You never know with the Buoys influence. Could sound like Buoys (the song)

Really hope they do a music video/short film for this when it comes out. This song is a journey

This snarl that he does sometimes is so odd, have always felt pretty neutral about it lol

I've finally started listening to Defeat (music box version) on the regular, as though it was a studio recording. It may as well be; I have to bring up my iTunes app on my phone whenever I want to listen to it (like for Song for Jerome) but I randomly had the epiphany this month that Defeat is, and has always been, good enough to listen to without having a studio recording. Despite thinking it was incredible the first time I listened to it, I listened to it extremely sparingly because I didn't want to suffer demoitis. Call me pessimistic, but I think it is very unlikely that the studio version will live up to the music box performance - not through any fault of the boys, but this is just the way nostalgia operates and how studio expectations differ from the more liberal expectations of a live recording.
Anyway the point is that live Defeat really is magical and is worth listening to as an official song in the AC discography. And even the live aspect brings a special sense of wonder to it.

Is the MBV defeat better than the more recent ones? Haven't listened to it yet

i think people are pretty split on that but in my opinion definitely yes. it's much more organic and playful sounding. deakin on that piano, the additional musicians, whole different vibe

The strings in the build up to the middle section and the higher vocal melody are better, much more exciting. Everything else, new versions are better.

Middle section on Blast vocal melody is like two notes, sounds moronic.

I find 2021 defeat 1st and 3rd parts to be some of the best music they ever made period. I'm a big fan of the new second part. I love the buildup and I'm a fan of the melody, as simplistic as it is. The lowkey section reminds me of their 90s slacker rock roots. But i can concede the music box 2nd section is still the best. But it's not fair. The build up is brothersport energy and they have like 5 different musicians with them and an entire facility built to make unique noise.

Almost guaranteed that Defeat will get the Midnight Special treatment. They've already fucked the middle section into two repeated notes and took out the euphoric vocal melody. All we need now is some wispy singing, change the chords and perhaps a jaunty Saturdays bass line. Maybe Sonic Boom could produce it.

That's the spirit boys. Keep anti-hyping yourselves so when real defeat hits you turn into a kid again Lol

Stan, it will still be their best song and you know it. Musically, it's improved from what I've heard in September and I'm sure it'll be good on the record. C'mon.

I'm just thinking of almost every recording since the Water Curses EP fifteen years ago. They consistently flub their best songs in the studio.
House
Taste
Brother Sport
Grace
All of TB
Take This Weight
All of GR & EPs
Saturdays
Midnight Special
Cherokee (based on Blast)
Defeat?
I love the band, love their songs, love the bootlegs, find their more recent recordings relatively weak and sometimes just dull.
You only have to listen to the PW live shows to hear the enormous gulf in quality and emotional resonance compared to the recorded songs. An album which is widely regarded as bouncy frippery becomes a fucking monster live set up there with some of their best music.
They're essentially a live affair for me after Water Curses, solo work included. The studio recordings are a passing fancy. That's why I'm not especially arsed about whichever faded Xerox version of Defeat they end up with. We already have a few amazing versions of the song as it was conceived at the moment of inspiration.

This is such an accurate/concise description of what I expect haha. Hence finding solace in just enjoying the Music Box version for what it is.

Midnight special and jabber hurt u so bad u put Cherokee and defeat on dat shit without even hearing the studio version... and u didnt even put Taken boy HAHAHA. I can agree they a live joint but I'm not particularly averse to a lot of changes they make unless they are sound-shifting like moving some of focus on vocal elements from the low pitched reverberated vocals to the autotune stuff.
I'm ngl, call me biased, superfan, yadda yadda but they'd need to fuck up Defeat big time for it to not be fantastic. I'm not talking murmuring praise for the underdog, it was you with the good dog, i'm talking like making it 5:59 seconds or changing the synth lead to a chiptune tone or putting random pitch shifting shit over it. It's too good a song and I'll be pleased with the performance they play in studio. Obv we've all been burned by strange decisions. I'm constantly playing the one jam from blast radio where they just sustain the first chord Lol. Considering that the 1st and 3rd section have only gotten better and are better than the Music box (obviously barring the second section, which I think was just a good performance. call me sacrelig, but the strength of the music box was the buildup and the whirling strings and the additional performers that were playing, not particularly the melody or lyrics but I'm ready to go tit for tat with fellas on that. The harpsichord sounded dinky haha but the 2021 second part is mad good) I think they can land it and maybe they'll fuck up Gem and I or some other song Hahaha.
Interestingly enough about Midnight Special, I feel the way it came out like that was because (and obviously, take this shit with a grain of salt, I know nothing) Avey had trouble transcribing it to record, which I don't blame him for because it's 2 chords and vocals. Perhaps he struggled with conveying the weight of it, maybe the more impassioned vocal performance fell flat so he decided to steer it more in an atmospheric spacy direction, drenching the guitars in more effects and a more subdued vocal delivery. I think the actual answer is they are always a bit more passive on vocals on record, but it's fun to write fanfiction hahaha.

I didn't want to give the definitive fuck up list because I was on the bog so just skimmed off the most notable 5%.
Agreed that Defeat will be great, but they'll probably still fuck it in some way based on past experience.
