if i'm remembering correctly and not conflating tweets, the person said something along the lines of having just finished listening to the finished mix of the record and telling people to watch out for it because it was awesome

SJ/MPP or ODDSAC if that counts (it don't). I think..

They didn't record MPP material until 2008. And yeah ODDSAC shouldn't count

Skiffs is sounding so fresh and clean so far. I love it.
That said, I'm hoping Skiffs 2 differentiates itself by sounding much more loose, live and analog.

I know some people aren't big on the production strawberry jam has but I'm personally hoping this next album has a similar rawness to it, like you said. less reverb and more compactness

yeh, even something quite dry and woody. maybe a real vintage 70s kind of feel.

i dream of them getting the recording engineers that did big thief’s “two hands” record. so warm, so intimate, so live and spacious yet up close
i think there’s considerable reason to think they’ll go for a live, dry approach considering they’re reactionary toward their previous works and that doing so would highlight the good vibes of playing/seeing each other for the first time in studio in years

and the fact that they're potentially smashing out an album in a two week recording session. great way to keep those live, warm, intimate, band-in-a-room vibes

I only know my experience but worst case of demo-itis I've seen fans go through

I've seen people say it sounds flat compared to live performances. personally, since SJ is my favorite album in general, I don't really have any gripes with the production, but I guess I get it

No, SJ was really unpopular on here with many for losing the body and darkness and intensity. Plus the thin drums got slated. I love it but perhaps because every song on the album and the offcuts are classics.
As for CHz, I felt during the boots that it was just a weak set of disjointed songs. An enormous decline after the run they'd been on. It didn't really matter that it sounded like shit because most of the songs weren't good enough to be ruinable.

Knock you down was good enough to be ruinable and they fucked dat shit upppp. Dont get the hate for the rest... crimson and especially mercury man are classic ac. Can see people getting down on the production tho, but the songs themselves pretty complex and new. I could def see there being demoitis on Jam, it sounds so different then the boots by design. Jam is prob my favorite. I could see the drums being thin especially on Chores, which is just a wildly different song on record to me. I be seeing shit

Based on the 16 day timeline they should be wrapping this up or have just wrapped up yesterday. Super exciting stuff! Deakin was with Heba Kedry yesterday, would be very cool if she was working on this record as well.

I think itd be really neat if they started to incorporate the long-distance thing into the next and succeeding records. Like, couple weeks in studio. Everyone goes home. Overdubs/missed ideas done later.
Mostly I just really wanna hear a beefed up version of Defeat with some dense stuff going on. Imagine this new version of Defeat combined with the controlled chaos of the Music Box version.

What is the gap between finishing recording/beginning mixing Skiffs and release? Can we extrapolate for this one at all? I guess it’s difficult considering the remote recording style.

A lot of factors that didn't affect past releases but these have been the windows in the past
Buouys and COHGP were in the can when Tangerine Reef came out and the dudes had to wait ~6 months to release it. Release usually has to be close to a tour too. But I think it's going to take a lot of convincing to get Domino to release two AC LPs in one year, but I'm holding out hope
Fovrodi wrote:
[s]Yeah they must be close to recording.[/s] Reposting these dates for reference
PW- Finished recording July 15, 2015 released February 19, 2016 (7 months)
CHz- Recorded Jan/Feb 2012 released August 2012 (~6 months)
MPP- Recorded February 2008 released January 2009 (11 months, release delayed by Domino)
SJ- Recorded early 2007 released September 11, 2007 (~7 months)
Feels- Recorded March 2005 released October 2005 (7 months)

This album needs to be released same year as skiffs to give the broader audience any chance to understand how all these songs fit together

yep. too far apart and it looks like a lack of progression or growth between albums rather than a group of songs that all emerged around the same time and have been shaped into two different listening experiences.

Too close together tho and they might shoot time skiffs in the foot by overshadowing it. Late 2022 would be perfect, with no singles

No singles would be awesome. I'm fine with waiting til October/November if it's a surprise drop
Idt it's too big a deal if they release them say 6 months apart at least, and I won't complain at any chance to hear it earlier for any reason anyway

Without even thinking about how the songs fit together I feel like it would just be a bad career move as much as I hate to say that kind of thing. I feel like Skiffs is going to be pretty positively received and the March tour will rule. They can tour throughout the rest of the year and drop skiffs 2 in the fall to even better reviews and maybe do one more short tour of this material before they break for the new panda stuff/any other solo things cooking. Then by the time they get back together boom we’re in a new era and more people are paying attention after the Skiffs 1/2 punch.

I agree with your hesitation to say that and also entirely agree, it would seriously be massive if both of those albums came out next year. The world needs it.

knowing domino i could see winter 2023. Knowing domino i could also see fucking 2024. End of 2022 would be perfect since these two albums will be locked together.

with the shit Domino is pulling with Four Tet (friends of the animal collective), i'm curious if AC would ever consider moving to a different label after their contract is up in support of Kieran... or if that's too political a move for them to pull/if they care that much about label stuff any more or choose to kinda think about it as little as possible.
the other question is... if AC were to move to another label, who would they choose? Warp -- which had been mentioned -- would be awesome. 4AD -- whose had some bad press of their own -- would be another candidate, as they like to snatch up big indie bands (Deerhunter, Big Thief, The National)...
it would be cool if AC went back to something smaller, DIY, but those labels probably don't have the resources to support/fund what they're trying to do artistically now with shows and videos and such, which i think is their main want out of a label... it would be nice if they could be on a label that didn't put them on these obscene release date schedules though. let the kids have the music, dammit
