Ocean was the ambient soundscape on the Eucalyptus promotional site, and The Bog was a track Avey only played on the Birds tour late in 2019 and was also known as [Little Hands] I think. I hope it shows up as a full band thing at some point, it's one of the best tracks from that era.

*soundscape outro of Prester John fades out* "...I layed down and I missed it//...*three part harmony* laid down and I missed!"

That would be epic, but I doubt it. Although they brought back winter wonder land from the ark era, so I guess never say never.

I wonder if any of the new Avey songs he played in 11/19 turned into "Strung With Everything"...

From a Beach is still probably my favorite of the unrecordeds. Wish that one went somewhere so bad, those twinkly keys really felt like a precursor to the skiffs era I suppose though. just a super spirity song and man I love Avey's vocals on it

Call home (buy grapes) from Keep EP
Avey just really captures something so unique in this track. I love the rawness of the whole sound, I think it was recorded straight onto an 8 track tape machine which gives it this lovely warm sound.
I can't get enough of the werid slurpy drum beat, never heard anything quite like it before. Also the strange high pitch delay sounds going on throughout, think it's created by his voice but I can't tell.
Aveys vocals are just so good here. Especially mid way through when he switches up the melody! Really emotional stuff, wish I knew what he was singing about.
Animal collective are literally the kings of making weird sounds that make you curious on how they've created them.
I'd highly recommend giving this track a listen if you haven't in a while!

Goaltender. Fucking boo me. It's one of the best choruses they've ever written

Keep* and I agree! This song is a massive anthem with a kinda insane energy to it. Seems single-ish maybe more than Gnip/Hounds or Kinda Bonkers

thank you yes. father time has been one of my favorites off that album since it came out and i'll never understand the hate.
I'm always into it on the boots. Comes right after Did You See the Words on the 2011 setlist, Dave's beautiful vibrato steel drum patch, Deak's fat bass lines, a classic outro. A taste of mellow before the rest of the set goes berserk.
My pitch here is Lunch Out of Order Pts. 1 and 2, a pretty humble sound collage that lands on this chime loop, a relaxing melody, and these lyrics, which I find beautiful:
I don't mind grey looks from skies
Some days lunch is out of order
You got an older face but a young looking eye
You give me hope you got a lot to spend
There's no space for family time
Life is all kinds of meeting you there
If this trail turns through Manzanita Heights
Family tones are everywhere
The one time I got to shake Dave's hand I told him how much I loved this song and he seemed VERY surprised.

Kind of reminds me of a Four Tet song with lyrics

I'm not sure exactly how underrated it is, but Boat Race is one of the coolest songs Dave has ever written imo

I’ve been totally distracted by the retrospective listening schedule thing. Still keen to get around to all these and see them through a new lens.

After thinking about this I think I would give a vote for “In the Singing Box” as being very underrated. While I feel like Danse Manatee gets overlooked and underrated altogether, especially with songs like Ahhh Good Country and The Living Toys on there which are top notch Animal Collective imo and hold their weight against much of their discography. Infact the whole record especially the back half of it has climbed up and up on my list of AC favorites over the years. But In the Singing Box wraps up the record perfectly, it captures the child like nature, spontaneity, and playfulness that would begin to play a role in much of their music going forward, and the second half of the track explores tones and textures that set up sounds that would be further explored and more fleshed out on albums like feels and even MPP. So that’s my vote, In the Singing Box, a solid underrated great example of some classic early era AC.

It's 'You give me hope you got a lot to spare'! Agreed, one of my favs off of Eucalyptus. I could make a case for like half of that record in this thread tbh

For real, eucalyptus is full of gems. Sports in July being maybe the most overlooked. It's so freaking breezy, it feels like air conditioning on your face during a hot summer's day
and it has some of Angel's best vocal parts on the album

Yeah I misquoted that based on a quick internet copy pasta, but it's a line I think about a lot. He does a gorgeous melisma on that word.
Eucalyptus is such an awesome record, I can't stop it when I start it. Sports in July, Boat Race, In Pieces, Selection of a Place, all these quiet numbers that'll probably just live in the Avey vault forever, but constitute some of the best things he's ever done.

Yes yes yes. Feel the same about a lot of the tracks on panda bear s/t. The minimalism paired with the low quality,,, for some reason that style is like the door to infinity for me arrangement-wise

Geo’s track on keep cassette is so powerful, its impressive that that song doesn’t need more structure, it’s perfect as it is, very lucid ambience. I WISH he would release solo tunes, some that are more direct than the atmospherics on that movie soundtrack

+1 for Eucalyptus. Favourite solo album of the group probably. I can see this album being picked up in like 20 years and retroactively becoming a folk classic. Kinda like Pink Moon for Mr. Drake.
