The new cherokee def changed the entire son, or the entire foundation of the song. 2019 cherokee's breakdown gave us that familiarly unique ac energy (the repeated crashing drums, idk it reminded me of strawberry jam type energy like its been a minute) and gave the song distinct segmented parts. the thing with 2019 is that it completely moves away from that and instead shifts it toward being a complete like soundscape experience, and to be honest i think i might be able to see what they're going for, this style could be better in the studio, creating like this hypnotizing kind've scape reminiscent of sonic boom's all things being equal to me

Many thanks again, Hunks. Really appreciate waking up to this!

Prester sounds very good and is perhaps a sign of how the album proper will turn out, very similar to the rehearsal with a bit more fullness to the vocals and a bit less energy.

Without wanting to indulge in any doom or gloom, if that is the case, Cherokee has been completely improved. It's a classic example of them overworking the original spark from the song and, more specifically, the melody. They've done it countless times now, it's not just a question of live rawness, it's losing/changing a harmony or even main vocal melody which hit hardest.

You can go back to My Girls and Taste but more recently Saturdays, Midnight, Defeat and, seemingly, Passerby based on the most recent performances. I'll wait for the Blast performance of that one before reaching a conclusion but the verse melody has apparently changed to something a little less emotive. Cherokee seems to be another. I don't get it, really, but I appreciate having lots of different versions of these songs. The recorded one is just another.

i kinda always thought of cherokee as a swampy noir sounding thing, i feel like the new version is just leaning more into that vibe. also i genuinely think that the new bridge melody is straight up better and catchier than the old one, and also it still totally does build to a climax, just less of a blunt force type of climax? only thing i don't really dig is how avey stays down in the lower octave at the ends of the verses now. idk, the idea that the song is totally improved or whatever just seems kinda silly to me

ok it is very weird that the plucky synth response melody now plays during the "i've been dreaming for a long while/spent some time in cherokee" bit, where in the old version all the instruments besides the drums dropped out to create tension, that felt like a super fundamental and natural detail and i admittedly don't get that change on any level

but still, i think the new version feels much more filled out and detailed than the old one in a really good way. i really think demoitis is making the 2019 version sound way more complete than it actually was. back when i first heard it, i could tell that it was missing some big finishing touches, especially the bridge, even if the bridge was really cool.

You might say it's less climactic.

I think we probably disagree on just about everything there but that's part of the fun perhaps. It's more atmospheric and drifting, but at the expense of the emotion and energy of the song, to me. They do this kind of thing all the time, though, which is why I'm grateful for all the different recordings and versions they perform and share.

Haven't reeeaally listened to new Cherokee. Once or twice. And stopped listening to the old one cos I know it's gone now. I never really liked the old climax so not too fussed about that. Think the new Deakin bits will rule in studio. But yeah the verses do seem a little more awkward now, whereas they felt totally natural before. And I'm not a fan of the bassline. All the changes remind me so much of what happened to Saturdays.

Idk, I listened to the 2019 Cherokee again a few nights ago after not hearing it for a while, and I gotta say I think the new one has won me over. Especially now with this blast radio version. There are certain details from the old one I miss, like I still don't know if I get the choice to stay in the low octave during the chorus parts, but the new one honestly feels stronger as a whole. I really like everything that Avey is playing on bass, especially during the climax. And I'm personally a big fan of that vocal effect, though I can see why some might find it irritating.

To me, the real tragedy of this era is Passer-By. Maybe I'll be proven wrong when I hear the studio cut, but based off of the Lexington recording that Hunks posted recently, that one has fallen the farthest. The 2019 version felt like a thing of sublime beauty, made me straight up weep on multiple occasions over the past 2 years. Now it feels like "hey, this is still a decent song I suppose!" It simply doesn't hit the same way. This is one where I really see Stans point, someone should have gotten them to hit record before they got bored with the initial superior version.

Perfect post. I’m hoping that álbum passerby feels magical in some way like the OG did. So many factors about the new one Im meh on: the new lyrics, the reverse of the two verse melody lines, the quick drum/bass stabs in the previously ethereal deakin section, and losing the ghostly vocal effect. It’s still a good song but the old one had more mystique about it

New Cherokee is sick

yeah...

im sure nobody on here is a stranger to the feeling of getting super attached to particular music at a particular time. it's just how life works, nostalgia is a powerful feeling, and for me music always gets locked in to times and spaces in my life. i remember the first time i heard cherokee extremely vividly, like it happened last week. i was boarding the bus in Vienna, listening to the tulsa boot hours after someone shared it, nervous and excited for the song to start, my first taste of the new music... i had my scarf wrapped around me, and a long black coat, in a cold crisp breeze as winter was coming on. the sun had just set. i started smiling as soon as i heard those vibraphoney keyboard tones and jazzy beat, knowing right away it was going to be something special. i sat transfixed looking out the bus window at passing parks and streets as the song careened toward its weird, wonderful, autotuned-out climax. it was a magical and distinct moment for me. i don't revisit the meow wolf boot that often, but it always takes me right back to that moment and i get starry-eyed. you might even say it's a ~time skiff~ to a special time and place...

I'm sure I'll never be able to separate that memory from the song, but I don't really need to. i'm sure when i hear the album version that i'll form new attachments to the new version, and then i'll have both. i can sit here and complain that theyre not making it exactly in the way that i got attached to it, but being an AC fan you learn to appreciate all different sides of the same song, and i'm looking forward to that happening

They also referred to Genie's Open as... Genie's Open. Is that really the full title of that song? I kept hoping there was more to it being cut off on the setlists. Wish it would have stayed Sea of Light.

I wish more than half of Blast tips went to the artist.... I also REALLY don't like 33% of the tip going to Apple and Google. Seems like there are much better ways to support artists, but I guess the boys are down if they're committing to putting so much stuff out on the App

That it won't grow, I'm not so worried about. I think if I listen to this new Blast Radio version of Cherokee, I can replace it in my mind with the '19 Meow Wolf.

Climax still slaps pretty hard but its so huge and lush and kinda busy that it really is the thing you gotta wait for a studio polish to appreciate, I mean it can and probably will sound amazing all leveled out and mixed right, Prester style.

The vocal effect but ALSO that whiny synth bleet that comes in during the verses is annoying to me here, but I have faith it will be mixed properly come record cut

On Genie's Open title change -- I actually really love the new title and what it evokes outside of the already spoken "Sea of Light" and the interaction between those two elements. I can picture this sea pouring out of a lamp. Or perhaps the "Open" is something else, I can also just picture a wide open space, a clearing, a sea, something spacious. Especially in the transition from the first section to the second, it feels so free and euphoric. I also wonder with the title change... ~just perhaps~ even though the song has two sections already, maybe theres' another section they haven't been playing live (like on studio PJ) that will tie in the name lyrically.

Interestingly they referred to it as genie's open on the OG today. Could be the actual title. Also prefer it to sea of light

i would say, it seems like Dave simply really likes having the most raw and more autobiographically emotional earliest versions of songs live in the world of audience recordings!! it makes sense!!

He knows that we have the recordings, and even if the sound quality will be different from a soundboard or studio version, the emotions often come through even moreso that way!!

then with the many new/alternate versions of songs or sections of songs, they are able to become more purely an artful journey of curiousity, through finding each of the new ways that the energy of the songs reaches them to be expressed!!

I don't think there's any intent here, it's just inevitable that the further you get from the original emotion and inspiration, the more likely you are to lose some of that.

I appreciate the many versions argument but it doesn't fly for me personally. I'm not whipping out recorded from an arse pocket-obscure bootlegs when I get passed the aux. There's a reason we all want the studio version to rip.

Do appreciate getting deep in the boots though and 9/10 they nail the studio version so it's all good

that makes sense too!! :) :monocle:

i just think, he is so good at understanding songs themselves, let alone songwriting, he isn't somehow also losing the point of each song that changes. it may not be a direct intent, but he knows that the bootlegs are available, or even simply that he played those versions of the songs enough times that it gave them a complete presence in the world!!

So, the only Time Skiffs songs they haven't played on Blast are "Walker" and "Passer-by" (plus Strung With Everything, which I wonder if they'll keep a mystery until the album drops)

curious with these last two sessions if they'll double up on any of the songs or if they'll keep giving us Skiffs 2 + Music Box songs and keep it fresh each time

I wonder if they actually rehearsed Walker this time around since they didn't play it on tour (due to Avey's different setup on that song, from what I recall him saying). But I've found myself wondering the same...if they'll "double dip" on some songs or further push the Skiffs followup jams. But I suspect there'll be another surprise or two in there a la "Shining" from yesterday!
