Azazed before, I can't believe Gemini isn't on TS. Really fits. And there's absolutely no way you can have 'crack open another beer' and Defeat on the same record. Universe simply won't allow for it. Most likely scenario is it's some kind of standalone release. Or Defeat is

I really don't get what the issue is... Gem+I being on the same LP as defeat is no weirder than Visiting friends coming straight after Sweet Road. None of these songs stick out from the others to me aside from Soul Capture which we know was written much much later. Tbh that'll probably be on the new album too

Peacebone is on the same album as cuckoo cuckoo too, I don't see the problem either. I think Magicians into Gem would be one of their best runs by far tbh

They also said when they originally shared the demos for MPP they thought it sounded very different but they knew they could get them in the same realm with production, I'll find the source
Been hesitant to express this opinion but Time Skiffs is one of the plainest album titles they've ever had, I am hopeful the album itself will redeem it. Skiffs is also an uncomfortable word in itself

this might sound like hearsay to some but my problem with music box defeat is that it sort've speedruns the first verse. the thing is is that it has piano flourishes
oh god but i forgot how hard they fucking nailed the second part, the reich like way the instruments circle around eachother its like a steve reich repetition composition + a hit of the brosport crashes it's difficult because i feel as though if they just the opening of the second movement time to breath like they do in the box it would be perfect. i think that 2021's middle section will sound the best recorded.
the ending on the music box almost sounds hopeful compared to new defeat. it's like the fucking jazz lounge version of defeat. it's so beautiful. it's all donning on me listening to the fantastic violinist's contributions to the third section that this defeat could be a rework of itself before we even heard the song, like the 2019 defeat was how avey might've traditionally played it and was fit to be played with the music box's "sound set" like how they rework their songs live like doggy mpp era and good lovin outside 04, making that performance a truly individual kinda experience in ac's catalogue.
broke is a really good song, seems like this album will be based on more expansive, looser sound-scapier joints like how broke is all pretty and huge sounding now and less fast and punchy + including kings' harmonies and stuff like defeat, the slower part of magicians, compared to time skiffs tighter punchier songs like car keys and we go back.

Well, medieval people were drinking crates of beer and wine extensively, as the water was often too dirty to drink, so the lyric really fits the medieval vibes in this regard.
Also, if zthe universe allowed ssafer to not be on SJ, anything goes. I once gave a friend a folder with the mp3s for SJ with safer as track 10. He later wanted to buy the vinyl and couldn't believe Derek was the actual closer and safer was a b-side

I think so too, magicians + gemini would be great, especially if they open the record with these two songs.

I'll third Magicians -> Gem & I as a potentially awesome opener combo. Magicians is so dark and mysterious to start, and those drum splashes in the intro/verses are already classic imo. And then Gem gets me super pumped with its chorus, it'd be a great early album track.
In general, this album's tracklist is gonna be very interesting with Magicians + Defeat already taking up ~30 minutes of runtime alone. Perhaps the first time they'll do less than 9 tracks on an album together since Ark and frankly, I'm here for it
Early tracklist prediction...
1. Magicians
2. Gem & I
3. Broke
4. Kings
5. Stride Right
6. Defeat
7. Genie's Open
Though personally I'd prefer Defeat to close it out (it's too powerful to follow imo), so maybe move Genie's after Kings in that scenario. Possibly add another music box track into the mix too. With Avey's longer songs, I like the idea of pairing Gem + Broke to give Panda his own little section as well. I enjoy Soul Capturer but do hope it's released as a b-side...if I recall, didn't Avey himself say they weren't sure what they were gonna do with it yet?

you can totally have "crack open another beer" on the same record as defeat, considering defeat has the lyric "twist 'em off and pass 'em 'round"

also oddly i think the track placement i feel strongest about is gem and i as track 2. such enormous track 2 vibes on that one.
thinking something like
Magicians
Gem and I
Soul Capturer
Kings
Genie
Stride Right
Broke
Defeat
would be absurdly long lmao, could definitely vibe with soul capturer/kings as a non album single

I feel like this album, much like Time Skiffs and a lot of their other records will also contain one suprise song we've never heard before, with something like Soul Capturer or Genies being cut.

People saying that Defeat only works as a closer forgot that Derek was preceded by freaking Cuckoo Cuckoo
Anyways Soul Capturer is the opener and Broke is the closer

That new lead vocal melody on the middle section of Defeat is unfortunately worse than before. Like two notes again, and again, and again, and again. Honestly, sometimes I listen to their music get somewhat worse over time and I just think what the ruddy heck are they thinking? I would love to work with them as creative director. I'd do it for a nominal fee, travel and expenses and maybe some pocket money for when we're not working, go round the shops and stuff.
All I'd do is when they'd written a song and performed it a couple of times, I'd just say 'that's it'. Someone would say hey what if we just...and I would go Phil Spector without the gun. Sit down and play that fucking song. I'll press record and stop. We got it boys, your best song yet. I would love them to have a more spontaneous approach to recording and daring to capture their initial sparks more. After twenty years of not doing that, I'm certain it will happen any day now.

^from the shows in septemeber? Don't remember that from the Blast session.
but I mean, beyond that... yr not wrong. If certain vibraphone riffing/autotuning isn't in Cherokee final cut, I will explode myself

All those saying AC finish albums on high notes and Defeat wouldn't work are forgetting that the only album we know about from this era so far is going to close with Down Down Down!

jesus that transition in Genie's Open at the end is fucking ridiculous, beautiful, and sets up the most syrupy part of the song and most of the new material.

Cuckoo Cuckoo miscarriage grief song immediately followed by a song that includes the line “wrap your pecker” as delivered by a talking dog

Bring back the “I see you” from Defeat at Henry Miller 2019 and you’ve got my vote! Or start a campaign like Kanye; “I’ma fix Bolder”

Defeat is a penultimate, side 3 kinda thing. My vote would’ve been to end the hypothetical record with We Go Back/Defeat/Down Down Down Down/Genie’s Open! (We Go Back ends with the song circling and descending down a sonic drain. Defeat would be a killer follow-up.)
but I’m only the observer, not the artist.

If Magicians into Gem and I is real then I can't imagine how destroyed that side of the vinyl is gonna be for me. This is the only 'itis' I will actively develop for these releases.

I think cause Royal is in a major key its happier sounding. But then again I feel like AC doesnt often write in minor keys 2bh

it's not their best album name ever or anything, but it's pretty cool i think. i've caught myself thinking about it from time to time, both in terms of the imagery and how weird it sounds to say out loud. classic ac really

I love the title 'Time Skiffs'. Really evocative and at the same time playful and awkward in that AC way.

I'm still curious as to what can follow Defeat. Obviously, the LP side will conclude with it, which is natural. But is it followed by a soothing lullaby or a burst of energy?

Genie's in the new blast session is like 9 minutes long, throw that on the end, magicians first and defeat somewhere in the middle then I think we're looking at something real good here

maybe its because i havent really paid attention to genies in the boots, but the blast radio version is the first time ive ever heard the outro on that song and god damn its amazing. has strong spirit theyre gone energy to me. i love that song now. defeat into genies ending the album would be excellent

I'm feeling the same way, it was barely on my radar but now I feel like Genie's is masterpiece level. At this point I may be more excited for the tour and 2nd LP than skiffs.
