I don't love it as much either but whatever, embrace the change... might not have any bearing on the studio version. that part of that song was freaking perfect 2 falls ago... time flies
Time does fly. It's crazy for me to hear cherokee and feel genuinely nostalgic... 2 whole years ago is when i was listening to those boots all the time on the bus to class. ugh. life is weird.
also i cannot believe they brought back sea of light... can anyone describe what it sounds like now while we wait on recordings to pop up
didn't recognize it at first as the arrangement was a bit different from the version i saw back in atlanta 2018, one slower section as with the original and then a bit more sped up, full band part that really leaned into it in a fun way and it felt very at home with the other new material!
unrelated sidenote but iirc there was no stevie wonder section on last night's purple bottle? i know that was a staple of it for a long time but it appears they threw it out
i have a question for the people here who saw the show, or any of the 2019 shows (assuming theyre similar). maybe a weird thing to ask about animal collective, but does the new sound / the new songs / new style still strike you as psychedelic? I really like all of it, but I just feel like it's less engagingly psychedelic than they maybe have ever been, if you ask me.
Not sure if I'm the only one feeling this way or wondering about it. I'm sure the album will be psych-y, but the performances seem a little less bracingly interesting than I'm used to from them.
i saw two of the 2019 shows (santa fe and point reyes station). i think i can catch what you’re saying… their new songs sound more “up front” to me, immediately given. part of the animal collective mythos as i view it seems to follow the history of consciousness, if you will. their music in the early days was overtly mythic and ensconced in sounds. over time they learned, consciously or not, to “find their voice” through the noise. in some way, they were developing an interiority of/with their music that brought out their individual identities to the forefront while using the sounds to reinforce themselves. i think we start to see that shift really take place on/after merriweather. in short (this needs to be a much longer analysis on my part), the new music is great(!) but feels like they’re dressed in psychedelia and not of psychedelia because they’ve moved away from the sound finding the song to the song using the sound for their identity. in some way, this seems like they’re self-actualized as a band. thankfully they’re a band that tends to keep on moving, so my faith is that they won’t necessarily settle into pure dad noise.
So Avey announced the name of the upcoming album in between song banter or after the show to a fan?
Banter, and seemingly everyone heard something different. Which, knowing them, is probably by design
my husband & i got a pretty solid recording on our h6 and listened back during our drive back to NY; i'm 99.6% sure it's "skiffs." we're still on the road but hoping to upload & splice the recording as soon as possible, but i think we saw at least one other person with a recording device which is sweet!

the middle part of cherokee sounded pretty psychedelic to me, it still seems pretty off-kilter but def not as immediate as other albums for sure. it's so interesting. and GOD BLESS YOU FOR RECORDING!!! IM SO EXCITED
stoked for this recording. thanks for doing the community a huge solid, diatomatix!
also: that person who posted they have a copy of the record, and that it's like 47 minutes, seems authentic considering they said the record was called time skiffs...
Thanks for recording! There are certain moments from this show I've really been wanting to relive. You guys got a little taste of Stride Right, but just wait til ya'll hear the full thing, along with Prester John. The second part of Prester doesn't sound all that different, but the first half, oh man... straight beauty. Deak straightup steals the show on that one, you'll know what I mean.
It's the third clip in the second Instagram link above and sounds way more like an ambient Feels track, lots of piano. Doesn't seem like they kept the waltziness but it sounds sick.
I second the take towards the top that this is maybe the band’s least overtly psychedelic sound. It’s basically rock! I’m lukewarm on some of it, but songs like “Dragon Slayer” and “Defeat” have me really intrigued. No one can ever accuse the dudes of standing still. I think if this era had come between Feels and Strawberry Jam it’d feel less jarring. Coming after Painting With—I know I’m ignoring Tangerine—it’s sort of a headscratcher. Feels less natural then the Sung Tongs to Feels or SJ to MPP transitions, to me anyway.

Thank you so much for recording the set! I won't be able to catch them this tour so it's greatly appreciated.
PASSERBY YES. almost anxious to hear it, I feel like most of the changes they've made to these songs have been good, but also this song was already totally perfect in 2019, changing it at all feels risky.

It was my favorite song in the 2019 mix. But I agree and have liked most of the changes to the songs since then. They've really filled them out, making them more intricate and dynamic.
Just got back from the Cincinnati show. Didn't recognize a couple new songs because I haven't heard the 2019 boots in almost two years but here's what I wrote down. Someone can fill in what I'm missing, I'm sure
On a Highway
New Avey (We Go Back)
New Panda (Car Keys)
DownDownDown
Fickle Cycle
Sea of light
Stride Right
Passerby
Magicians from Baltimore
No More Runnin
Piggy Knows
New Panda (Strangers)
in the Flowers
Soul Capture
The Purple Bottle
Edit: After listening to old boots/looking at the new titles, I filled in the songs I didn't immediately recognize

Wow awesome! Curious about that first encore song, what were your thoughts?
It was pretty faithful to the performance they aired on Blast Radio. I liked it a lot
That reddit post says the second song they played was Bolder but I don't think it was? Unless the song has changed quite a bit since they first played it. I could be wrong though
Edit: Relistening to Bolder from Desert Daze, I think it's right actually but the song was pretty different. No autotune and different lyrics
apparently downdowndown is called "royal" on the setlist, and strangers is called "broke". it's pretty likely those are abbreviated versions of the full titles (along the same lines, sea of light/genie's was listed as "genie's open")
