Listening to this, less obnoxious than I feared.
"Animal Collective was once inextricable from the overall concept of indie rock, but has little to no profile today. What happened?"

^ they mentioned every Kings of Leon album except one having five syllables in the title...
which makes me think the REAL reason for them losing their indie darling status was dropping their habit of having at least one S in every title. They cursed themselves.

the doofusness of that answer didn’t bode well for the discussion

i hate trying to tie the narrative to ac like they were gonna blow up and go mainstream w mpp bc they never really ever were or are accessible in that way, it rly felt to me that they were doing what they wanted to do the entire time. ac's music even when it's just 2 guys and a guitar has so much shit going on in every song. rly even when its catchy it demands so much attention and would not be imo not what music that would fit the narrative of indie band about to blow up. after they released chz which was blown out to shit and every avey song had like 6 different sections 2 choruses and 50 overdubs of radio static and tree frog whistles

Watched Save Yourselves! last night. Came out in 2020, neat indie Apocalyse flick. Pleasantly surprising tune choice. Spoilering just to be safe
Spoiler: show

Getting into Nina Simone, and noticing her live performances scratch the same itch for me as really great Avey performances. Their voices are both rough and raw but so powerful and disarming and honest
Anyone else feel this parallel?

Interesting! Which of her records are you listening to? I can hear what you’re getting at, now that I think about it. She had a real visceral delivery sometimes, and, like Avey, an incredible range. “Isn’t It a Pity” from Emergency Ward and “I Get Along Without You Very Well (Except Sometimes)” from Nina Simone & Piano reliably turn me into a puddle. Her playing on the latter kind of reminds me of Doctess’ work on Feels.

Emergency ward is exactly what I listened to right before posting that! Really only scratched the surface of her work, I know that live video of I Wish I Knew... Which is if course classic. And I have Silk & Soul which was good but definitely made me realise I'm more interested in her live recordings.
Agree with your comparison to feels piano too. I'll have to check out I get along with you very well. Thanks!
More listening is in order and I'll try to articulate more

lol I assume that's a reflection of his own personal feelings rather than any kind of musical teaser...

Smh avey really should have done some sort of 10 year re-release for down there with the vinyl being pressed on like “swamp green” and a download code for 320kbps instead of 128kbps

They should definitely bring back more CHz stuff when they can finally tour again, feel like that material fits well into their current setup. I wanna hear them play Applesauce again.

completely agreed and i felt pulleys worked perfectly with the '19 setlist, the breakdown they would play was soooo nice and it was one of the songs that balanced out the chill energy of the set they were playing with the rock-ish type shit. mercury man would be PERFECT

Somehow missed it in 2017 but just now discovering the tracks Avey did with Mickey Hart for Ramu and it's so wonderful, my heart is full.

Yeah! It's rare for Avey to lend his voice to others' tracks and always thought these were a bit easy to overlook.

was listening to kids on holiday and got struck by how much it sounded like it could've opened sung tongs if leaf house wasn't already a perfect opener, so I tried to take all sung tongs and ST-affiliated trax and order them into two albums, a softer side and a freakier/more energetic side
soft side:
deak side:
ended up not being quite even in length but i think it turned out ok:)
pre-release single = kids on holiday/always you

That’s cool^
Not including covered in frogs on ST is the worst thing AC has ever done to me

I know what you mean, I definitely prefer message boards way more.
There's some good parts of the reddit page. I've read some well written posts here and there. But overall it feels too small attention-span oriented for me. My gut feeling is that the community is teens and early 20s fans. Which is really cool to hear their views as I'm an older fan. But sometimes the modern internet nature of "race to the reward" leads to people rushing to make a joke to get points instead of having a discussion. Can't say I'd fare any better if I was raised in this time. I'm thankful I have a variety of music I can use to quell/obliterate my inner dialogue.

god i agree. i think the subreddit is... nice, but it feels like younger, more meme-oriented fans which can honestly bring up some secondhand embarrassment

Almost all subreddits for bands are cringe. Seems like the cringe increases proportionately to the size of the community
