I will say, I listened to most of chz yesterday out of the blue for first time in long time and enjoyed almost of all of it but amanita (and kinda wide eyes) stood out like a sore thumb. It's like too meta. It does kinda sound like Coldplay writing a song right after listening to a playlist of AC. And that like intro riff sounds like early MGMT in a bad way. It's their dad-rock-iest song.
And it seems lyrically real rushed. "Go into the forest" part sounds like an origin story for ac in a bad, ill-concieved, missing-the-point way. There's some cool parts in middle, musically but lyrics?
And like why are there two songs on chz (amanita and wide eyes) that are basically just describing a woman in distress. Idgi.
That is all to say 90% of the album's rules. And like in certain moments, or if u were a younger ac fan at the time, I could see amanita being "epic".
But ya uh give me crimson anyday. Give me what happened if u want me to cry. They shoulda just re released what happened /endrant

Amanita coda sounds like Imagine Dragons doing their best AC impression.
I love Pulleys and Mercury Man is kinda cool but those last three songs feel kinda off to me. In fact the whole alien radio vibe seems to completely drop off after Monkey Riches if I remember correctly (could be wrong)

Centipede hz is definitely top 4 or 5 ac albums for me but all of the absolute best songs from that era (honeycomb, gotham, crimson) aren't even on the album......shocked by all this amanita slander though that song is good

I think ChZ is pretty much perfect as it is, although all of the non-album stuff and radio performances are amazing too.
The only alternate playlist I'd offer is to listen to the 4 radio shows and cap the last one off by leading right into ChZ, just like how it premiered.
That was one incredible night. It was a late summer night in New England so all the windows were open and the wind in the trees blended into the music. My buddy and I mixed and matched some enhancers and danced our asses off.
I remember not knowing how the album proper began because the last radio show bled right into it. And the entire album played out as a swirly psychedelic soup with each song melting into the next. i was surprised when I heard the proper release that the actual LP began with "this is the new....." as I thought it was just the radio show.

My main CHz take is that it's a very good and largely misunderstood album due in part to the mixing, which could have been a lot better. But also, Applesauce is so far and away the best song of that entire era, only a couple other songs come close.

Yeah seems out of the blue too! Coldplay? Are we all hearing the same song? Amantia is a fantastic album closer and even better as an absolute stunning opener to the 9:30 show!

mercury man is where its at. and pulleys is chill. amanita? hmmmmmmmmmm...
I love the premiere of it too, memorable late summer/early fall vibes.
I love the mixing tho, feels like a great ear-massage most of the time. some of my favorite sound-design from them ever. and panda's drums are just really crazy.

Not sure if it's even my favorite AC album to listen to, but it might be my most cherished album of all time.
It's a special album for me because it was the first time I really experienced pre-album hype. Looking back it was all pretty ridiculous. I obsessed over the boots and thought the album would change my life. When Todays Supernatural came out I limited myself to one listen a day because I didn't want to wear it out. My most anticipated songs were Mercury Man and Rosie Oh. I didn't like the MM mix (i do now) and RO turned out to be lifeless without Crimson. None of that mattered though because Amanita blew my mind. I decided it was my favorite song ever. I just really liked codas. Thats why I was so hyped for Mercury Man.
Now I would have to agree that Honeycomb/Gotham and Crimson are the best songs. Honeycomb especially reminds me of that feeling of possibility and anticipation from the months leading up to the release.

I won't repeat any of the comments I've made previously but having relistened to CHz for the first time in probably two or three years, I can respect that they're trying to find a new energy and inspiration after running themselves into the ground touring MPP, and pouring a lot of genuine emotion into Down There and Tomboy.
I like the idea of Dave turning to his 90s alt-rock faves to find a different spark and while the desert rock/alien radio mash-up doesn't excite me as a concept, I think they did as well as possible in bringing the two elements together with a squelchy junkyard sound. I've never heard that combination of bouncy plastic synths and goofy samples paired with grinding guitars and reedy vocals. It's unique.
I just have to accept that I don't like that sound at all. It's often ugly by design. It reminds me of those poor buggers who hoard and pile up any old stuff until their house is more stuff than house. In the absence of stronger songs and with Noah contributing so little, they plug the gaps with detritus. I do really enjoy Applesauce as a wonderfully catchy bit of pop and I adore New Town Burnout, the towering highlight belonging to a completely different writing session, but I seldom listen to the rest of it.
As with Painting With, there's an absence of the things I most love about AC - tenderness, euphoria, atmosphere, breathing space, dynamics - although funnily enough these are more present in Honeycomb, Gotham and, particularly, Crimson. That said, I have no regrets for 'what could have been' as with some solo work. It's simply one which doesn't appeal to me as much.

All of yr concerns are addressed by LPX....
(It is X btw if we don't count count oddsac or tangerine even tho many people would be right to prefer those to chz/pw)

I totally agree, it sounds like it'll be one more in line with 'what I like about AC' from the songs and performances but if not, I respect their decision to make what they want. If I can't meet them halfway, I can go fuck myself, and if I do but still don't like it, so be it. They should record what they want and how they want.

yeah tricky, I'd definitely class them (as well as hollindagain) as albums in their own right, but adjacent to the main album canon. Of course Hollindagain is a live album but it feels separate agan to crack box, 930 and ballet slippers

Imagine if the band laid down demos or even proper takes of the Fall '19 material and while mixing, the Deaks spills kombucha on the board and all the stuff plays back in double time. The band unanimously loves the happy accident and the next album doubles down on the frantic PW energy.

If the vocals were chipmonked, and there was lil trap/edm thrown in, PW is basically 100 gecs. I mean not really tho.
Hollindagain is an expansion pack/dlc for Danse. Crack box is LP2-4 dlc. 930 for chz and ballet slippers for mpp and wowwwww we still need a like fireworks and/or feels live era vinyl.
Ttg, tangerine and oddsac are visual-component albums and one day we'll surely get an immaculate music box vinyl/Blu Ray box set.
If you do count tangerine and oddsac as main-line band LPs, than LP13 also sounds cool, 13s a great number

“Bees” through “Daffy” is an incredible 21.5 minute stretch of music. So unique in their discography. So unique in the history of recorded sound. Damn. “Definitive” in my book. When I think of AC “magic” I think of these 21.5 minutes.

Yooooo.. speaking of Oddsac...
" I certainly would love to do something live with the band where I’m mixing and breaking down the video into parts that I can mix live. We talked about trying to do something along those lines before everything you know, has gone the way it has. " - Danny Perez
Oddsac live is a distinct possibility!
