http://collectedanimals.org/lyrics

hello! since wikispaces has stopped offering their free wiki plan, i've set up a new site using MediaWiki (the engine that powers Wikipedia) and hosted it on the CA servers. my goals for the new site are to
  • maintain its excellence as a lyrics resource for AC and side projects;
  • extend its usefulness for non-lyrics information, like release info, song history, music video links, etc.;
  • make a more editor-friendly experience by using wiki-native tools like album/song templates, etc.;
  • successfully redirect traffic from the old site to the new one. i've messaged the wikispaces folks and it sounds like they're willing to put in a redirect, but i need to confirm with them exactly how that will work.
creating accounts (from the top right corner) should be working—forum accounts will not work, sorry. feel free to poke around and make any improvements that stand out! if you'd like to see how templates work, compare the markup for http://collectedanimals.org/lyrics/Strawberry_Jam and http://collectedanimals.org/lyrics/Template:Album. please avoid editing templates themselves unless you really know what you're doing; if you've got an idea for a new template or a new field, lemme know. if you've got any more large-scale ideas, post them in the thread or add notes to the Home page discussion (http://collectedanimals.org/lyrics/Talk:Home). also please let me know about any bugginess/weirdness/bad styling; working with MediaWiki CSS is my least favorite bit of the process, but hopefully we can land on something that works.

thanks y'all

i'd also start a low-key competition for wiki logos; i still have access to the old one (http://lyricalcollective.wikispaces.com ... 9/logo.gif) but i think a new one would look sweet. i'll try to straighten out the placeholder in the sidebar (as well as improving sidebar navigation in general) this evening.

post your ideas/sketches/mockups/submissions in the thread; if it gets out of control, we can drop it into another thread.

it looks awesome! I love your new ideas - it's a good way to get our info out to fans who aren't a part of the forum community. did you want to try to recreate the old layout or are you planning to keep it as it looks now?

the old layout concept doesn't behave quite as nicely in the default MediaWiki css — the tables don't like to cooperate, and it's already a super fragile layout on the old site. in any case, i think an idea similar to what's there now is more promising for responsive design across different device sizes. again, i'm happy to take any suggestions! although i do work in web development for a living, this site presents some different challenges than what i'm usually working with.

i think getting rid of the weird Windows 95 border/gray color of the tracklist boxes and maybe replacing them with some dimmed/blurred version of album imagery (for readability) might look nicer? i'm not familiar with styling MediaWiki at all so i'm throwing the idea out rather than just doing it but maybe?

Safari 8 on Yosemite has some of the tracklist on the left rather than all on the right btw

do you mean on the home page or individual album/song pages? i wrote up a long diatribe about the latter, but i could almost be convinced on the former (since it's an essentially static page).

the types of slick transparency/blur/gradient effects that apple has been favoring the past few years are tricky to do in CSS alone and generally involve browser-specific hacks that won't work for all of your users (browsing around, i was unable to find any similar effects that behaved nicely in chrome), but cheating and uploading some sort of separate image or using a custom gradient definition could be possible. again, this would be useful on the home page but overkill elsewhere, i think. if anyone's interested in mocking that up i could look at some possible implementation approaches?

oh, of course! anywhere but the home page/artist home pages it seems like too much. i'm not really all that interested in using CSS3 to display anything fancy given how spotty support is either - we can use a separate image. i'll try to mock something up once i'm off work tonight!

Thanks for keeping this going guys. I was wondering why Cheap Treat wasn't up. I thought we had those, but then couldn't seem to remember where they were.

Edit: Nevermind. Found them. I'll post them here and hopefully someone who isn't a pc moron can throw them over there when they get a chance.

From Pete:
Spoiler: show
Cheap Treat
is there a doctor in the house?
stop the show we got a grown man down

drove up just to take me back
must of had a bottle stashed
popped them probably thought he had it

stop the show because everyone gets down
don’t ask why

you find in the end
you’ve become what you condemned
its the end
and the cycle starts again
bring it down

first lightly
with a strong flexibility
don’t act like you never need
another chance to make it bleed
right works subjectively
wrong acts subjectively
right works subjectively
the final word just barely makes a sound

i learned the blocks i know my lines
but only if theres no surprise
but only if theres no surprise
stop the show because everyone gets down
don’t ask why

you find in the end
you’ve become what you condemned
its the end
and the cycle starts again
bring it down

first lightly
with a strong flexibility
don’t act like you never need
another chance to make it bleed
judge lightly
with a strong flexibility
don’t act like you never need
another chance to make it bleed
right works subjectively
wrong acts subjectively
right works subjectively
wrong acts subjectively
