I'll say that Stride Right feels a little less interesting musically than the other tracks, but the lyrics are so good that they kinda carry the song. DownDownDown is amazing tho, love everything about it. I love the contrast between Deakins clear vox and Aveys autotune. Something about it reminds me of tracks like Loch Raven and #1, the way the vocals mesh together.

his lyrics are kind of generally sweet and direct in a way avey and certainly panda's lately aren't always.

I wonder what the reasoning behind only playing appreciate once is. Like were they not happy with the performance or not too excited about the song? I mean it’s pretty chill but it’s def not one of the top tier new tracks
Am I just reading too much into it? I wouldn’t be surprised if appreciate was one of the tracks that doesn’t make it to the final album, maybe like a b-side or on an EP

i wouldn't read into it too too much since it was 13 new songs during a 6 show tour, if it was a regular sized tour and they only played it once then i would definitely think that it was one that they weren't as psyched on but for such short tour i figure it's one they just don't view as a big jam. but yeah probably more likely to land on a single or ep than say cherokee or 24 which they played every night
which song are they most likely to screw up by messing with it too much in the studio and why is definitely going to be defeat?
Spoiler: show

Passerby and Prester John just need to be played straight like they were on the tour, would be so easy to not fuck up
But they might anyways
But they might anyways

yeah all kidding aside, in AC's case i do feel like when the songwriting/heart of a song is truly great and special it typically doesn't need much extra added to it at all to enhance it, can be fairly bare bones and stand on its song writing alone, see: mothlight midnight special, screens, opis helpus, judy biworker, country report...i get the sense that they are sensing this a bit with this album cycle
edit: YET on the contrary look at something like song for ariel -> guy eyes

i have thought about this a bit, and i have devised a three future plan with your sentiment @dud and the shared anxieties of the top board in mind:
GOOD FUTURE: Cherokee is lead single, Defeat is recorded in full, is album closer and is given back the energy and buildup of music box version, every song remains faithful to the live version and the entire release is a cohesive 11 track project, with a 4 song EP with an unreleased song, stride right, kings and appreciate. the album freebirds next thanksgiving. when the album drops they post on the board again
NEUTRAL FUTURE: album sounds like prog rock PC music with Gem and I being lead single, defeat degenerates in studio and is put in the middle of the album, pitchfork gives the album a 6.9 and 75% of the album is about the writer listening to sung tongs in williamsburg and them mixing up "dragon slayer" and "prester john" while also saying defeat is too long. ac describe the album as a futuristic take on various old fairytales in the press release and every interview they do asks them how dragons influenced the album and what avey tare's name means
BAD FUTURE: bolder is lead single, every song is recorded Buoys style and autotune overtakes every vocal overdub they put in the music. defeat is not put on the album and is instead put on a EP with kings. every song is made to be exactly 4:25 seconds and prester john is given a 4 on the floor beat. panda bear dyes his hair blond. cherokee is never recorded

SPOT ON. I think in any scenario, Defeat will lose 5-8 min in the studio. Most of the other new songs are so tightly structured already that they can't be shortened nearly as much as Defeat can. Of course, I think it's a bad move but it always ends up happening.
Also my money's on Cherokee for the single, with Strangers as the runner-up.

yeah bad future would probably be more like a chz style production a la crowded mix. guess he meant too much autotune which I didn't have a problem with on buoys.
weird how like panda does that ass-sounding hocketing shit one time on reaper and then we get a whole ac album where half of it is like that (I actually like all the painting hocketing more) and then he has a few tracks with autotune on buoys and now we're getting an ac album with autotune. same thing for samples on PP preceding mpp. huh

Hey y'all just a word of advice, nobody is actually forcing you to post in this thread or anything. If there is nothing happening, maybe find one of the countless other things that exist to engage yourself with. You're only waiting if you aren't doing any other thing. Go do another thing. Even if it's just a drawing of what each song title from this album means, to you, or ranking all of the proper name songs in order of most proper to least proper. If you're bored then go play

love the idea of someone reading that tap quote and having their mind blown and their whole life changes and a montage ensues. nah dog.

yeah lol wtf thanks for giving us permission/shaming us to not post about something we enjoy talking about (on a message board specifically created to talk about this subject), there was a CA post-quota guy holding my fingers to the keyboard until you posted that and now he went away
admittedly "what are they gonna do with the songs in the studio" is prob the most tired ac convo but some of us enjoy messing around on here during off-season when we are bored

im ignoring fovrodi, also by buoys i meant the skeletal woth heavy bass production which i would think would mess up a lot of the songs. digital homies production might be the way here or just a new style all together. hearing these songs with the sheen of d homies would be sick !!!

Just found the YouTube video of music box performance and watched again for the first time since last spring. How much of the music box stuff was performed on the mini tour? I have listened to three shows that were bootlegged from the recent tour and definitely didn’t hear all of the stuff that was played at music box but also wasn’t taking an audit.

Right now it's just Defeat and a pretty different Prestor John that has been played. And I guess Downdowndown tho that's been way fleshed out. So no Magnolia/magicians, spider bit my lady, that peanut butter heart song, or tri-kid. I quite like Tri Kid but I'm okay with some of them being music box only, esp if we inevitably get SOME kind of release of that (surely right? We know it was recorded)

It was professionally filmed and has been edited. We're not sure what will actually be released though.

they cant be sleeping on magicians from baltimore and the path. maybe they thought defeat was enough for a long term kind of jam so they proggified prester. either one is rlly sick tbh. i think magicians will come back tho

Yeah the path part of prester is great. Who knows maybe they'll do a bleed/bleeding type thing with it where we have our cake and eat is too
yeah feel like magicians and peanut butter hearts in particular have to come back, but if not then i'd be fine with official release of the music box video

The third part of “Defeat,” particularly when Avey sings “defeat,” gives me the weirdest feeling, like this feeling of utter hopelessness. It sounds as if they’re floating in space or something, untethered, adrift. Kind of reminds me of that point in a psychedelic experience when everything seems perverse and confusing and subjugated to some impersonal force. You have to face this terrible emptiness. There’s something really cold and alienating about it. It’s beautiful, but I can’t put my finger on it. That they’ve achieved that effect is, to me, incredible. I’ve never quite felt this in a song.

thats exactly how i felt, ive never heard them this absolutely devastated before except for maybe laughing heiro or when it hurts bad enough it feels like this. i thought t was like staring a bad bad tsunammi in the face and gripping the sand on the beach before it flows on in.

Still wondering who's gonna engineer this bad boy. I have a feeling they'll self produce but maybe Rusty or Scott Colburn, who Deakin posted a picture of a few months back, will make reappearances.
