i feel like there are a lot of potential closers, but i agree with you dio that there are not as many that feel likes openers. i could see defeat, passerby, or bolder all being solid closers, and to a lesser extent downdowndown or cherokee. as far as openers i def think cherokee is the best choice, but like you said, also could see it as track #2. feel like 24->cherokee would be a great way to open the album, but 24 doesn't really feel representative of the album as a whole to me so for that reason i feel like they wouldn't choose that one. really interested to see the sequencing of this album for some reason, which is usually not something i care that much about

i think dragon slayer could be a good opener or 5th track

I wasn’t huge on dragon slayer at first but It snuck up on me, those “ayy-ayy” harmonies are so fun
My track list for a double album
Part 1
Cherokee
24
Prester John
Strangers
Kings
Bolder
Dragon Slayer
Part 2
Downdowndown(I think it works really really well as an opener for a side of the album)
Passerby
Gem and I
Stride Right
Appreciate
Defeat
That way you get a more jammy and fun
first half with a more reflective second half

it is kinda crazy they haven't checked off the ol obligatory double LP yet (crack box doesn't count obvs).
Theres could be cool, esp if one of the LPs was just mostly Defeat which it will need to be anyway. Yeah, let them stretch their legs a bit cuz lord knows they've done enough albums with the 'concise pop/rock' vibe (like they're last 4...)

what would you guys think of Solange-type production on new AC album?
Binz got that simple 2-chord groove like a few of the new tracks, interesting multiple harmonies, dry drums, could be a direction Panda steers them into?Spoiler: show
I wouldn't be surprised if the album was produced this dry, a lot of the new songs don't sound extremely textured or spacey from the boots and i think dry production would sound really interesting on a song like Prester John. maybe not so much on something like Stride Right or Kings though

Yeah, the lyrics are typical weird recent Panda, which is to say goofy and trippy, so I'm all on board

And let's get iiiiiin it"

forgot to post here after this happened...
so on friday i was on my way to a job interview in brooklyn. i was minding my own business, listening to tomboy on the g train, when i see someone who looks an awful lot like avey on the platform. it fucking is, and the mofo gets on my fucking train with abby. we lock eyes and i jump up to talk to him.
definitely made a slight scene in hindsight haha. showed him my people tattoo and talked about some of his new material, and the bands new material.
i name dropped a few song names from the new boots and he seemed surprised. he said that "they're all definitely trying to do something with them" (duh) and he wasnt sure when they would hit the studio. he wasn't sure about the next tour either. i think it's safe to assume a very late 2020 release, or even a spring 2021 release based on him not really having any info of it.
definitely made my whole week, i showed up to my interview riding a post-talking-to-your-idol high. if i get the job, i can confirm avey is magic and a good luck token.

having a couple months now to listen to these jams, gotta say passerby is the one that's still blowing my socks off every time i listen. lots of great songs here but that's the one that really feels most special from the batch

Totally agree. It sounds so Animal Collective that it seems like it should have already been released by them a long time ago. The 2nd part just hits all the right spots. Though, all the new songs seem very promising. This could end up being my all time favourite AC album but we'll see.

If the next album has Passerby, Dragon Slayer AND Defeat on it, it's p much guaranteed to be a top tier "classic status" release.

I'm going to say it now: DO NOT get attached to the live versions.
If I see one person write "what happened to the vocals? They really turned down the energy on that song." I'm going to leave this board and never come back.

Passerby does feel in general like a song/melody that's existed for ever. just plucked from the ether. It kinda feels like a darker CHz era jam that should have existed alongside Gotham and like Pulleys or maybe Crimson. But its ummm way better than all of those. Also has like a Procol Harum vibe in the first half. such a beautiful transition/2-parter.
I might be even more excited for studio Cherokee and Bolder to see how the more aggressive auto-tuning is handled there. I sweeeear I will be okay with an even semi-drastically different vocal-processing but I def like what's happening live! there's parts of Cherokee that are borderline too T-Payne-y like when he says "I went down/back to Cherokee (?)" so I'd be okay with that being toned down/changed, but the "if you can feel the love, you'll heal me" is perrrrrrrrrfect and infinite and I hope it lasts for like 2-3 whole minutes. the xylophone sounding parts during that section are some of the more euphoric stuff ive heard from them since live MPP era.. or PW era Techno-Raven maybe (or 2nd half of daily Routine live)

good post, yeah i'd love for that part of cherokee to last for like 3 minutes similar to how they jam on the 'till fully grown' part of brother sport, love when they get in a groove on something so energetic and rich like that

Still warming up to the others, but there's no one song I actively dislike. I'm still wishy-washy on the AutoTune though. Sometimes it works, other times it's too grating

i may get some hate for this but i think deakins tracks are some of the weaker of the bunch. i like downdowndowndown but the others dont do it as much for me. then again i never got too into sleep cycle so maybe im just missing something? i just think the new pb tunes and avey tunes are so crispy and tight, the deakin tacks dont really seem to go anywhere too interesting
