If no Midnight Special, in a fucked up way that will feel right. It's perfect in the form we have it and it almost doesn't need to be recorded.

K.C.Yours will be Derriere. I feel it.
Chilly Blue is Jimmy Neutron maybe.
Looks like Enjoy the Change is gone, unless it's the single track. Can see a nice transition happening between Goodside and Eyes.

hey stupid question from someone who is unfamiliar with a lot of the boots: is the first track from mothlight (i think its first fan title was Right Now but not sure if that's changed) guaranteed to be on the album?

"right now" was the fan title of what turned out to be called midnight special. It's possible the title changed and is on the album but not guaranteed

I don't know why but I feel like Midnight Special is Our Little Chapter. They both describe a period of time in an affectionate way. That's the end of my thesis.
Saturdays (Again) really threw me on the second and third listen because of all the melodic changes to the vocal and the delivery is so laidback and dreamy. Live, it's much more fidgety and has a nervous energy. Recorded, it's more deliberate and sombre, some unusual notes in there which are starting to hit pretty deep. I'm slightly missing the more intense doo doo doo and the chorus is really quite different but as I start to get past the jarring sensation of not getting what I expect, and I listen to what the song actually is, I think it's gorgeous. I've never heard such a straightforward ringing guitar tone from these guys as in the opening bars. The bass is very Spirit, though!
This album is going to be an incredible companion piece to Buoys on this form. Fucking hell. This is could be the best year for Animal Collective in a decade. Amazing.

ya I was referencing this, saw it yesterday. wonder if maybe Noah was preemptively addressing stupid fanboy competitive bs... it is funny how they're gonna drop a month from now, and I almost feel like this is gonna fuck Noah's roll out a little more than it already seemed a bit fucked cuz of the freebird/1.5 vids. but I mean they've been into smaller album roll-outs lately. I don't think we'll see another pbvsgr or painting with style release for a bit. puzzles/posters is already a lot.
god can't wait to listen to Saturdays tonight.
and ya, guess all the truth fans will be nervous af to see which songs don't make it, but whatever, either way we win

Accepted midnight special was gone ages ago. I do like Stan's idea though. Maybe... after all Taken Boy has come back to us

Loved that cow synth comment by the way, proper laugh.
If Midnight Special does get chopped, it'll be the greatest unrecorded song they ever did, alongside Maya and Jabbawocky.
I'm listening to this on headphones now and it's remarkable how different it is from the live versions, actually. The guitar chords which were really upfront and drove the harmony are mostly there for rhythm with the bass doing much of the work with the chord changes. The whole song has got such a mysterious dark and wispy atmosphere, very melodically sombre, lots and lots of little phrases which dip at the end where they were more, I dunno, they were reaching higher, almost triumphant when performed live. Because this still has that energetic beat and the scratchy guitars, though, that clash of sombre and feverish feels more emotionally complex, deeper, nuanced. Live, it really reminds me of Red Rover by Lindsay Buckingham, that kind of Avey thing. This feels like something different.
I think the simple fact is he's my favourite singer and the live version is absolutely stunning and this is also stunning, in a different way. I'm so happy to have more music by Avey Tare, my favourite songwriter ever and will be until I die.

cows are just land gators and koalas are just land coral, makes perfect sense

I was a little underwhelmed by the song and the video tbh. I've avoided all AC related boots for the last handful of releases to avoid demoitis, so this is my first listen to his new stuff and it's not clicking yet. I didn't really vibe with Eucalyptus either tho, so maybe this era of Avey will fit better into a later chapter of my life.
Gonna peep those vids^ and familiarize with those jams tho.

Also the artwork for this album might be my favorite AC related cover since Person Pitch.

Is it gauche to just ask him on IG about Midnight Special? Seems there's always some young imbeciles posting screenshots of inane questions he's answered for them. Or did he shut down his IG for that very reason?
Fact is, if three songs are going to die, there's no way that Midnight can be one of those. It's probably the greatest song he's written in fifteen years. IT'S THRILLING ME NOW.
Listened to Saturdays a good ten times in a row now.

And yes agreed PHDT above, I love love this artwork, kind of makes me think of Don Quixote but probably just the cover of my edition of Don Quixote.

Funny how he changed the lyric from little cousin to younger cousin.

I cannot understand the rest of that line. What is it?

I love the big, ominous descending sound after he sings the younger cousin line.. This song (and if that long writeup is any indication, perhaps most of the album) seems to have a lot to do with the passing of time, the kind of regard you get for the enormity of life and your experiences therein once you've spent a decent amount of time in it and have a lot to look back on. That descending bass sound is like the ceaseless, inevitable march of time and aging. It makes time fly and turns younger cousins into grown ups. Or that's just my reading of it anyway.
