well they don't know about the line since they want a link.

I really like the album tho to be honnest I am kind of lost, which is good too.
My expecation for this album were to high because of the live show beeing my favorite of all time. After the 4th listen I see the songs are taking formin my head. But I think it is the first time I have a problem with Noah's voice, those "you" in Master bother me a bit, they are really loud in the mix too. Maybe I'll get use to it,
I was not in the mood to listen to a new Panda Bear record but I could not resist. I am/was tired as hell after an 8 hours shift and a phone conversation with my ex. Emotionally and physcally drained.
I am mostly disappointed by my lack of excitment about it, maybe sould have waited.

I feel the same way. I was surprised to not have it click immediately—I was familiar with the new songs and went to one show but didn’t overlisten. I was weirdly bummed about the freebird though and didn’t have much reaction the first time beyond “oh this is that song”

it felt really different by the end of the day. I want to keep listening to it when it ends

Really?! Do you not like "Derek" then? To me it's the first time Noah's been this playful with his vocal delivery since Strawberry Jam and I love it! "Master" was one of my favorites from the live boots, first listen through I was a little worried that it got too auto-tuned BUT after a second listen I think it adds more dimension to the song since the structure of it is so sparse.

I gotta say, production wise and overall sound quality, this is the best sounding album he's done since Person Pitch... thank you Rusty! Panda's instincts for his songs should never be messed with and this album is a true testimate to that. The body of every song is exactly the same as how he performed on this past summers tour... but Noah and Rusty made every element sound absolutely PERFECT in the mix!!! I hated all the extra noises added to Tomboy and Grim Reaper, they were unnecessary and distracting to me (the album versions of "Tomboy" and "Pincepe Real" are good examples of those added synths ruining already great songs IMO). I feel like those were the "extra frills" Noah was referring to when talking about Homies and Buoys...

The end of "Token" might just be the best Noah has ever sounded!!!

Only talking about the 'you' part in master, I love the rest of the vocal on the record and track. Moslty because I loved the song live and It was less in your face in my mind. I remember this moment more melodic and tender.

EDIT : what Derek has to do with it tho ?

I really miss the more drawn out ending that Master had in the boots. The rest of it sounds pretty good tho.

Both kinda have that yodel-style, and the "you" in "Master" sounds like the beginning of "Derek" to me.

I miss the extended outro on "Master" too! I still kind of wish it closed the album and not just Side A, I'm not fully sold on "Home Free" as the closer... but I love how fleeting the album is and "Home Free" plays into that.

It took me a few listens to pick up on it, but I think Noah sorta may have just innovated again. Listen to what’s going on with the vocals in Master for instance. He’s got a “dry” lead vocal and then a harmony vocal layer that’s the one being tuned. He’s also got a slap back on that layer which adds even more musicality to the auto tune. In this way, it’s like he’s got a lead vocal in the traditional role and then another vocal that’s acting and sounding more like an instrument in the traditional sense of the word. This is some cool shit.

Yeah this sounds super unique and is definitely his first major reinvention since Person Pitch, also might be his best since PP too. Just listened again and had totally different favorites from the first time which is a good sign, Token in particular

Definitely agree that this is a major innovation for him, I can't believe how clear and upfront the vocals are. It's super minimal but it feels really different from Homies, and even there the vocals weren't this clear. I loved every song and can't wait to relisten to it, Inner Monologue is craaaazy! So unexpected but really really sweet. The harmonies on "one" right at the beginning of the chorus :negative:

Some of these songs remind me a lot of Jib Kidder

also holy shit I Know I Don't??? Definitely my fav on first listen, I love the melody and that weird instrumental break with the weird little synth and that dubbed out drum beat

the lack of drums at the beginning made me gasp. bringing them in at the chorus works beautifully

token is really interesting. i think i like it? its a really interesting technique to sing so gently but put the vocals so up-front in the mix

Saw two shows on the spring tour earlier in the year and these songs all translated really well from live to studio.

this.......is very good. i was a lil skeptical after dolphin which did basically nothing for me on first listen but ya this is great stuff. it's really refreshing to like not quite recognize his voice as his at points (i was like 'is this anohni' listening to dolphin for the first time lol), and there's some really neat stuff throughout. i'm really into this newer lyrical style he's been doing since homies.... quite a bit harder to get a sense of what he's talking about compared to the really straightforward stuff on like tomboy and I think it all works well

the chorus on "master" is kinda goofy i've got to say.

i said something similar when the album was announced but it really is odd that domino is still committed to such long-ass release cycles when pretty much every label around its size has moved towards much shorter or less conventional ones. freebirds are obv nothing new but for a freebird to be so divorced from the actual release timing like this feels real odd at this point. (the last big-release freebird i remember being this early was the last shabazz palaces album like two days after announcement and sub pop responded by panic-announcing a second album for the same day lol)..... idk i can't imagine it hurts sales much these days, but it probably hits streaming income pretty bad at this point, which i'd guess is a pretty big chunk of what they'd expect to make from a release now

pretty blown away — I listened to this while on my break at work and it was good but for some reason like others have mentioned, it had these moments where I was kind of genuinely confused. It did not hit me immediately at all . I’ve heard all these songs, and they haven’t changed very much in terms of structure or performance, yet within the context of the album, they hit me so different, they really sound different!

but after a thanksgiving drive, thru hills and shit and lots of traffic, I listened to this back to back and It just struck me as thisn intensely beautiful work. Its a folk album thru and thru — it’s a perfect blend of the old & new folk, something I’ve been struggling to create in my own alchemical laboratory, the idea being that if the folk music of the 20th century was defined by the acoustic guitar, and the immediate reaction that solo guitar and vocals brings within a human being, then the folk music of the 21st century would have to be sub-bass, fruity loops, and auto tune. during every single song I thought, this is nuts, this dude is doing this and pulling it off, writing beautiful simple songs of out seemingly disparate elements. its really one of the freshest sounds ive heard in a while. My opinion means nothing, of course, beyond the fact that I hate this shitty return to normalcy that indie rock is going thru, like Tom petty’s Ghost haunting America. This is real Ass new sound, and I love it

Everything really works on this album, there’s the archetype of the righteous singer and his guitar melded with the image of the SoundCloud rapper, a moody and isolated pure synthesis of modern culture. it’s past nostalgia, and it’s on the path toward a genuine New Sound. Which, for a dude who’s really famous for making sampling cool and normal enough ffor white dudes around the world, would have to be invigorating. it’s such a weird turn that makes a ton of sense.

There are a couple here which haven't yet hit home but I'm finding them intriguing at least and I look forward to letting them grow, but that run from I Know through to Crescendo is absolutely amazing. There are so many flourishes with the delivery and instrumentation and production. It sounds both very dry and raw and very carefully elevated and warped by the studio. Some of this is just sensational. It's very exciting to hear him so invigorated and revitalised after rinsing a certain sound with Greaper. Homies was a brilliant step into new territory in parts but I never expected this. It's also amazing that this is somehow the dubbiest record he's ever made, just in a much more subtle and weird way.

great post, def feeling all this. I think a lot about AC being this weird bridge between 20th century and 21st century music, but with this album the connection is really executed in such a strange and exciting way

I really really like the background of Master. The synth, and the noise thing. The synth reminds me of something that could happen in a ambiant techno track (I don't know if it's the right word but Gas, Dettinger, things like that).
Really like the fact that it is a shot album.
