yes it's true. just got back from the deerhunter show at le poisson rouge. avey, geo, and deakin were in the crowd. before the last song bradford cox said he'd rather do something else than play the last song (snakeskin). his original idea was to have his friends dave, brian, and josh come up and "dj" his new tape off of his phone. after him insisting they come up they went on stage and then brad gave the audience 3 ideas- play snakeskin, play the new tape off his phone, or improvise with his friends. surprisingly some people really wanted to hear snakeskin but brad seemed set on some improvised jams. he gave avey a mic, geo went over to the keyboard/sampler. and deakin went behind the drumkit and was playing around with another sampler. cindy lee came out halfway through the jam w a guitar. they played for 20 min and it was, for lack of a better word, incredible.

i recorded the whole thing on my phone. i'm shit at mastering audio and all that stuff so if anyone wants to do some work on this be my guest

ENJOY

Whoa. That is amazing! Thank you for recording it. It looks like the Mega link needs a key--can you deprivatize the link by any chance?

My friend spotted Avey, Deak and Geo early on but I had no idea that this would happen. I was sick of Bradford's B.S. lol so I left the main room for awhile but ran back in when I heard him bringing them up on stage. I also got a video but it's from the side of the stage. Will upload soon. My buddy also got the whole thing and he was standing more in front.

Oh also I call B.S. on deerhunter saying they had no idea the tape would sell out so quick. yea. right. And saying the reason they did a tape was because record stores make it too hard to put out records. If you are really trying to get your music out there let people pay to download it for chrissakes smdh /rant

Are u an Ice Age fan or somethin? Idk if you’ve seen brad and gang before but that was a light amount of banter compared to most DH shows I’ve seen.

God Damn

I think I like this jam better than anything from the Music Box performance. This is monumental.
I'm calling this jam "When We Die, We Shit Ourselves"

P.S. Deakin is actually a very competent drummer. Would be down to see him do more. Also thanks for recording kinetic! The sound quality is quite good. If you read this The Feeling Store, maybe you could master it....

oh my bad. I thought Deakin was playing the drums.

I love that Deerhunter and AC are friends. I know they toured together in 2008 and I recall that Dave and Bradford also jammed once or twice as openers to a couple of 08 shows. They called themselves Harmony Club.

Ghetto Cross is the side project of Bradford and Cole Alexander of The Black Lips.

And I used to love that blog. Bradford released lots of great music on it (intentionally and unintentionally) as well as those early AC micromixes. Also some of the best photos of the boys came from that blog. Oh 2008... what a time to be alive

but ya that blog was fun. '08... when deerhunter seemed almost as dangerous/chaotic as early black dice and fleet foxes werent corny yet (or were they all along???). also Dirty Projector's Rise Above (07)? anyway, ya some people have not aged well compared to 07-09 halcyon daze

Ha!

Yea I know but I think he kind be kind of jerk actually like calling out that dude for his mic dropping. Def didn't need to stop the song for that but that's just my opinion.

I've seen them 4 or 5 times. The last time I saw them was when Aldous Harding opened and that show took the cake for Bradford banter. He was berating the sound guy and club in general which is like not that chill but w/e I guess

Here's my buddy's vid:

Dudes this is legit incredible. One of those things that they shrug off as some one-time fun thing but for me, as a total AC and Deerhunter music nerd, it's something I will always cherish and probably listen to for weeks to come. Like this is improv but it's actually quality and something that would blow my mind in the studio.

But I guess these sorts of ideas just fall out of these guys. Reminds me that AC and some of the Deerhunter boys truly are some of the top music minds of our generation. I mean surely Avey has to be considered one of the top 5 or 10 musicians of all time.

Also, anyone know how Avey would approach a vocal performance like this? Like what sort of lyrics would he be coming up with when he jams? Would it be nonsensical?

What keeps me so infatuated w this is that I’m a pretty light musician but I’ve jammed with people a good amount and know how hard it is to get into something. And when you do it usually sucks but when you’re in it, it feels good.
With these guys we’ve heard the amazing music they’ve put out but don’t REALLY know their songwriting/recording process. We read about it and watch studio stuff but still..they put out fuckin feels and microcastles and still can’t quite connect the input with the output.
Then you see/hear something like this. There’s a moment in the beginning where you’re a little worried. You think “Fuck. Is this gonna suck? Are two of my favorite bands gonna just shit all over the stage?” Then they do this and you realize they’re other worldly. This stuff pours out of them and they’re as authentic as it gets. You can’t fake this shit.

Looking forward to being WRONG to the full extent of the jam.

its just weird and cool to hear avey vocals over something with so much more traditional guitar. slightly jarring almost. love how anti distorted guitar ac has always been, or yknow like typical guitar fuzz at least. but this is kinda sweet.

and ya Kinetic I feel you on that, a jam like this is cool cuz it does feel like friends just having a good time and also happpening to make something super sweet on the spot
