I am so bad at remembering set lists- problem #6,542 of being an old fan.- but ya, that set list from Boston seems about right.
And lust_in_phaze, I was maybe 3 “rows” back from the stage towards the left and my left ear is still ringing solidly. The dude in front of me had some nice audiophile quality earplugs. I think he inspired me to get some, although some day when I’m 80 and deaf, I’ll say: Panda Did It.

Dunno how old you are but I am in my 30's and was glad to see some older fans at this show--some folks near to me in the crowd who were probably in their 50's--so cool! Inspiring me to never stop going to rock shows.

I wonder if generally the fanbase of AC will age with band, and there will be less young fans?

holy shit that sounds kinda cray? but whatev, doubted panda gave less than a shit or was even privy to.

vaguely reminds me of how i remember hearing some ppl carrying on and having convos on the outskirts of the music box venue on the first night specifically. only noticed cuz of how loud--quiet dynamic those shows were, but was less distracted than i was just fully blown away that someone would want to try and have a horribly inane convo during a 1 hour~ set of beautiful godsent music (that u paid 30+ for??) but anyway. like that is kinda sad/pathetic if u cant just chill and listen/unplug/de-socialize for just an hour!?))

these songs/sets are amazing. pretty damn surprised by how many songs he has in rotation rn is it like roughly 20? liking his selections too

Woken and then Home Free are the missing ones.

Show was great. A guy on reddit said he was recording and the venue made him delete it. That blows.

From the balcony, I saw Deakin in the audience during Geo’s set. A bunch of people walked by him but nobody seemed to recognize him.

Here's my full thoughts on the philly show now that I've digested it-
Spoiler: show
overall the show was really great, although one of the most prominent thoughts in my mind after leaving is that it didn't nearly achieve the same effect as the 2014 show i saw, when the show felt like one giant psychedelic mesh that got progressively more emotional and intense as the show went on, climaxing with nadir. this show was, surprisingly, stoppy-starty, meaning each song was distinct, had clear transitions, and the show itself didn't feel like it had an over-arching "narrative" either emotionally or in terms of song structure or anything. At first this was a negative thing in my mind, because I have such a positive memory of feeling drained and blown away after the 2014 show, which really felt like it escorted me along a journey. But i realized that noah probably intended this show to feel different in this way. it seems like the buoys material has a stronger focus on the songs as songs rather than the songs as part of a trippy sonic environment that changes as it goes on. although i prefer the more immersive feeling of the greaper show, I do think he achieved what he was going for. the name "buoys" and the use of bubbly sounds, distinct percussion, guitar and piano seems to me like he's going for little "bubbles of sound," pockets of melody that seem to be "floating to the surface" and bobbing there. plus the buoys jams complement the homies jams really well.

Buoys was definitely the song that impressed me the most. partially because its the only new one that I listened to prior to the show, but I definitely get the feeling that noah was putting the most emotion into it. His vocal performance was really stunning, and those synth stabs were way stabbier than I could have imagined. i really do feel like that song is the emotional core of the new music.

Nadir was the closer, the last song in the encore, with the apoc ending. I was hoping he'd play it, because of how moving the performance of it was back in 2014. It definitely sounded great, but noticeably different in subtle ways that I wasn't expecting. The least subtle way was that unlike the first time, the strobes weren't pulsing in time with the music the entire song. this meant that it didn't have the same trance-inducing, closed-eyes-visuals-triggering effect as the first time, but it also allowed for more dynamic space in the music that I wasn't anticipating. without the strobes, and with his voice mixed higher than the first time, the focus was on the melody rather than the stabbiness of the synths, which I guess is how it ended up on the album too. but on the album and in the first performance, I mostly felt as if the song represented some sort of resolution or acceptance- a feeling of moving on in a positive way. but at this show, coming from subtle atmosphere changes in his performance, it felt as if he was reflecting on feeling that way- it was melancholy and resigned rather than hopeful. I was thinking this throughout the song, but it felt even truer at the end of the song, when rather than reaching the higher, triumphant note that he used to, he chose to go a third down, singing the tonic instead. he also started repeating "go get up again," then "need to get up again," "gotta get up again," and things like that. he repeated phrases like that until he let his voice fade further down in the mix, before the synths suddenly died and transitioned directly into the apoc voice sample, without teasing it like he used to. to me, all of this meant that it was a dramatically different experience- im not sure if anyone else in the audience was thinking like this, though.

Also worth noting- danny's visuals were killer, better than ever. I really feel like he's grown a lot as a visual artist in the last 10 years. the dolphin visuals were stunning, somewhere between waves on a beach, clouds creeping over the sky, and waves of electricity sweeping slowly across the stage.

Also loved the motorcycle interlude for nod to the folks

930 show very good. Felt hostile atmosphere but I think I was projecting. Love and envy all who danced. The city is scary. Fuck that philly guy, kind of confirms my worst fears about the people around me. A good but tense time. Hope I didn't spread my discomfort. The setlist and new material were very good. Didn't care for Drone but everything else ruled

Really good write up speen. He didn't play Selfish Gene at the Chicago show but that's interesting to think about the differences you noticed in the performance compared to 2014. I totally get what you mean about the Greaper era shows as a sonic environment and how these shows feel different, I noticed in Chicago that he seemed not to draw out the transitions nearly as much as he did back in those old shows. But I agree it's good, I'm glad he's trying a different approach to keep things fresh.

And yeah Danny's visuals on this tour are so next level, and they're perfectly suited to the music too

I’d be willing to check it out, is there a better free audio program than audacity?

Thanks! And I'm not sure...I use Logic, but as long as there's compression and EQ you're good to go!

Raw and uncut ;) recording from the front balcony (for anyone else, I wouldn't bother downloading this until it's split/Eq'd...it's about 1 gb in size and will be super quiet)

Code: Select all

Dad, I’m gonna do this as soon as I get home! I’ve got a solid home studio going on and can try to run some magic on it. Hang tight!

man it was weird, ive thought at different points that Selfish Gene is str8 up my favorite song oat and yet i was NOT that into it as a closer in Austin. like it was great but idk maybe im burnt on it now from overlistening for 2 years in like '14/'15... also i honestly felt huuuugely trolled and gutted that he hadnt and wouldnt play Buoy at that show, like literally, i loved that show, but that felt like a massive fucking blow lol, i literally drove 8 hours for that song, but thats my own fault.

i need to see a 2nd show of this, he has too much in rotation and its all dope (except for drone, u can fuck right off. also never need to hear boys latin ever evre evr evr again)

i literally would go see him again (aside from the fact that i wanna see any animal collective in any capacity) to see buoys and woken again. i felt like i was looking up at towers when he was playing those songs. and also id like to see selfis gene live. it was my favorite when he was first playing greaper songs live but on the record i didnt like it at all. also to see if he would add any oldie cuts - id love to hear benfica and sequential circuits

Could not be more excited for tomorrow! I've avoided all setlists and recordings and I can't wait for what's in store! Had to miss AC at the Cradle for work a few years back so I'm READY.

Sunset from 9:30 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sl672NMc_0

Closing the main set with that version of Drone (a song I'd never seen live) was yes, massive. great show. under-attended though by the time PB finished it seemed as full as the 2014 show. Haven't kept up but glad I'm not the only one that feels how different these shows are from the 2014 shows... despite the fact that it's the exact same setup. i don't know. that Philly story is absolutely insane. no one was hostile at 9:30 but I did notice the "NO PRO AUDIO / NO PRO VIDEO" signs posted everywhere also said "PER ARTIST REQUEST." i heard about the weirdly hostile environment at some shows on this tour and was probably overthinking it last night. was really glad it filled out because there were like 200 people there tops when Geo went on. Bummer

i went from thinking Nadir was literal perfection to thinking studio version was soooooooooooo perfect as well, if a bit different, to thinking the new live version is like 'whatever' lol. what a ride. if it werent for hearing Buoys video, i probably would been so stocked for that to be the last song, but since i knew Buoys, i was basically just bummed i knew it meant i wouldnt hear it lol

lifes tough being a super fan smh... but no fuck u panda i want my money back WHY arent u playing Buoys and i guess Woken at every show?! maybe theyre super special songs and he doesnt want to over do a vibe that is so personal to him or something. but if he played drone at a show i was at for last song id fucking leave lol, i dont give a shit, i dont need my ears blasted, i never bring ear plugs, so loudness-ear-massages arent really my thing. i sound like a horribly entitled anti-fan but hey isnt that the point of posting on a bands forum for nearly a decade at this point...

Drone rules. I'll never forget the first time I heard it, on that bootleg of the first Tomboy show he played in January 2010. Sounded so massive, and at the time it was a shocking change from Person Pitch and all the b-sides / remixes of years prior. Was always disappointed the version on the record sounded so weak compared to those live versions. So it goes as an AC fan.
