Having given the Music Box set a rest for a few weeks, I've just come back to it while I'm in the bath (at this moment, bubbles, rubber duck, glass of wine and all, like an easy-living soccer mom with her hair down when the kids are away at band camp and hubby has gone shooting in the fuckin boonies, dunno what that is but it sounds like the right kind of word, get the giant dildo out thinking about the landscape gardener's sweaty torso, go for it love, life is the eternal now, you can run away from all this, no more fuckin meat loaf, spoilt brats and husband blowing his load after a minute forty) and Defeat is knocking me right out all over again.
Each section is better than the last. If this never gets released, it will truly be the definitive long-lost Animal Collective meisterwerk. Song For Jerome, Walk With You from Noah's Ark, From A Beach, live Jabba, Sponge Luke, Guggenheim Jam, you guys took a helluva beating!
The sparkling piano in the first section sounds like Kria's ghost playing in my buried memories and Dave's incantation sounds like a eulogy. It feels like something so grand bedded in the unrepeatable weight of time. It makes me think of the colossal Atlas Sound lyric from Quick Canal, "I looked in the dirt and found wisdom is learned through a costly process of success and failure".
The next section builds and builds with the Brother Sport insistent hats and the jabbing string arpeggios. Ugh, I love this part so much. It's blowing away the weight and resigned peace of the first part of the song. It's a reminder that we are still full of energy and joy, no matter what we've come through, no matter the burdens of a long life lived. It's as cathartic as anything they've ever written, in its own way.
And as I said last time I was raving about this song, I can barely process the final section. It's like a sermon. The piano is my favourite part of any Animal Collective-related song since MPP and Dave's vocal is only just behind. It is towering.
Fingers crossed this Kickstarter happens because my donation will probably be my Christmas present to myself. It's a comfort just knowing that it exists.

his voice on the verses sounds like light and like my memories and is very sad/happy, leaves me wrecked.

Ya honestly the cello and accordion and violin and the sax on sundown are all amazing. Esp the strings in prestor j and defeat . When I first got into this band more acoustic instrumentation was the last thing u wanted besides maybe acoustic guitars but now it makes my mouth water

man, how do they let so much good stuff fly by without getting the studio touch. i think live CTYS should be at the top of that list. for now the 2015 union park boot will have to do
i wonder how and when all of their personal live recordings will end up being released.. if they ever are...

This one gave me so many feels the first time I listened that I had to wait a week before listening a second time. It really brings me back to the pre-MPP "golden age" of the band, which I came onboard during thee tail end of, when they still had that certain magic their last few albums have been lacking (I still adore recent AC, don't get me wrong, it's just been different).
As was already mentioned, the piano flourishes are very Feels-y. The middle section has that feeling of excitement that only an Avey song can give. I especially like the cello and saxophone in the build up. It's sad those components might not make it onto a record since they were played by local musicians.
But yeah, this song is an instant classic and all the Music Box material is great (though, still warming up to Tri Kid). It's still surreal to me, coming back to this recording after going on my first sort of AC hiatus for the past 5-6 months, when this material is exactly what I want from them at this point in their career. I wonder if/where Noah fits in here. They have songs that need drums, so perhaps we'll see him behind the kit again?

i was listening to the first part of this, obviously this is probably one of the best songs thjeyve ever written. but i wanst listening and was feeling it a lot and it got me to the point of tears, but just listening to it i couldnt help but smile, and i think you could sum all of animal collectives music up in a single face it would be a single smile through tears. RECORD IT!!!

Like having different version has ever prevented people to talk about how they ruined this song or that song

Defeat kind of reminds me of Crimson, which was an epic live song. did you guys feel satisfied when that some got its studio treatment?

^this is exactly how i feel.
although altering the line "to live with someone in the heart of nowhere" was a sin.

After having just seen them play at Desert Daze though, I actually loved all the auto tune that Dave used. He managed to really use that to good effect.

Me too, couldn't help but grin when I heard that after already being a little familiar with the song from the previous boot. Sounds awesome, my favourite song after Defeat.
