to keep you AC fans a bit warmer through the bleak midwinter, we will play an unreleased track from the aborted first Campfire Songs recording session in December 1999
dawww what a pretty recording. parts of the vocals definitely have a similar sound to Danse Manatee. reminds me of Panda Bear's untitled track from that Visionaire compilation too.

I was thinking about that, I think the lower voice is Avey but it honestly sounds like 2 tracks of Panda. But I feel like it's gotta be both of them, I don't see why they would've had Panda overdub 2 tracks and Avey sit out. I think they're just good at sounding very alike

This gave me such feels! Its like a sweet lullaby, comforting, reassuring, something your mother would hum while you were a scared infant trying to bury your head into her breasts. Love it! Can't believe this has been something they haven't realized, that they've just had around. I wonder how many other amazing gems of unreleased material they have? Stuff that will only be realized years and years from now, when all the members have passed away, and relatives release an album of rare unreleased gems found in some safe, hard drive, or cd.
It's weird because for me it seems like the term was popularized when AC was getting really popular around MPP era, but it's def a term people use all the time that has nothing to do with AC.
^yeah that's true. It's definitely a thing outside of AC but it wasn't popular until well after they released the album http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/feels

Geo posted the tracklist for the mix, jfw7 was right that it was an abandoned recording session for Campfire Songs the band not the album. So who knows what else they recorded in 99, if anything
this is incredible and makes me both supremely excited and incredibly sad about the fact that they have fucking archives full of outtakes and the b-est of b-sides we will likely never hear

The album Campfire Songs is by the band Campfire Songs, which is what they went by for that release, and apparently in '99 as well. A side project so to speak. They didn't adopt the name Animal Collective until HCTI, around the same time.
Yeah, I was wondering why they didn't include it on crack box. there's some real gold on that set, but there's some other stuff from the time that i know they have good recordings of that didn't make it on crack box
yeah, jungle heat always sounded like a studio recording to me (although obviously it didnt have any overdubs or anything). I just assumed this one was from the same sessions that gave us jungle heat. But i also could be wrong and jungle heat could be a very cleanly recorded live show
I just assumed since it was touted as a live box set that everything on it was live, but who knows?
a lot of the choices on crack box have always seemed odd to me, like the versions of pilot and frogs are so bad compared to some of the boots from that period. but jungle heat and hey friend are both highlights, and do sound very similar to this new one
yeah, i've always been very confused about why they picked those versions of pilot, covered in frogs and we tigers. with all of the incredible boots that we as fans have access to from that time, you'd think they'd share with us something higher quality or somehow more "special" than what we have, but it just sounds like particularly rough and loose versions of those songs
idk, especially considering there's so much amazing stuff on there, like that recording of jimmy raven, the pumpking trilogy, the "set of the sun" version of de soto de son...

jungle heat and hey friend were recorded early 2001 at what i assume was a practice space (or apartment?) in brooklyn. not the same sessions as bleak midwinter if that's what you mean. it is interesting to wonder who those ACB tracks were "by" โ avey + panda? campfire songs? also, was deaken present on BMW?? so many trivial questions

I didn't mean literally the same recording sessions, sorry. i just meant it sounded like it was written in the same batch of songs, like probably written in 1999. Just guessing though, we have no way of really knowing

to me this sounds much more naive and undeveloped than nearly any other AC material we've heard (panda s/t and some of spirit are probably close). it's a competent arrangement of the hymn but i don't think it has the same inventive character as the campfire songs album or any of the crack box tracks.
this isn't a bad thing! i just think this definitely sounds like it's from guys barely out of their teenage years.

Pretty crazy they were doing acoustic vocal harmony stuff like this back then! def makes me wonder how much they were doing in the late 90s together seems like theres a bunch of stuff still in the back catalog. pretty cool they are starting to reflect on their careers. hopefully that 2001 tour documentary gets released!
