I was thinking that the other day. Avey's stuff is pretty sparse too, instrumentally. Would love to hear real flighty, raw production on tracks like Taken Boy, Eyes on Eyes & The Aging Heart

I want something completely new and fresh. They should ditch the electronics since they've been working with that sound for a decade now.

They need to stop following this roadmap, especially considering what Avey (and hopefully Deakin) are bringing to the table in terms of recent output.

I really hope it'll be heavily influenced by the songs they just played at Music Box Village.
That ODDSAC-esque feel of meditation and emotion and hopefully together with some more "songy" aspects, as in WWYWS and yes, als Screens "songy".

Obviously people have known about this for a minute, but seeing just the three of them onstage got my mind whirring on whether Panda is coming back for the next album. As strange as it sounds I almost think that would be good/exciting, and that’s coming from someone who’s firmly in the “Panda Bear’s my fav dude” camp. It would be kind of refreshing, and give everyone room to reset.

i like it in theory to change things up, but the idea of like 2-3 years of animal collective (from recording through touring cycles) without panda is not particularly appealing.

I genuinely think he needs a bit more time to work through this overtly trad electronic phase which has been the major influence since MPP. I get the sense that he contributed relatively little to CHz and his songs don't fit the aesthetic at all, as much as I enjoyed them. Everything from Tomboy through to Painting With is built around pretty similar ideas of repetitive beats and vocals weaving in between. I kind of want him to get it all out of his system and find something new.

i really hope they use the material from nola's music box..the shits amazing. but if not i hope they go in a similar direction as it. it reminds me a lot of avey's solo stuff right now whic his hugeth but knowing wat happened to the last group of solo avey songs that werent slasha house im scurred. the ambient parts i ESPECIALLY hope are incorporated into a new era of musiq since it really reminds me of one of the best ac works imo the 2009 banshee beat. letting the songs breath like that is so amazing and immersive. the nola songs still have the huge ac hooks too!! (magnolia is the first that comes to mind) maybe midnight special as an animal collective song too would be amazing

yes do right there with you
i am pretty sure we'll get an album/dvd out of it so i guess it basically is the next album, but i kinda want it to be like the actual next album and not just a side thing, or else be the vibe for the new stuff. so crazy about new avey solo stuff, the sound of the NOLA shows, and even pandas solo stuff. all of it is like amazing, so maybe panda should stay solo for a sec, and avey/deak/geo stay on this Nola vibe cuz god damn i love that shit sooooooo much fuckkkk. hard agree

so do you think we've already heard part of what will be on the next studio album? The possible candidates seem to be the music box material and the unreleased avey stuff. The music box is supposed to be "site specific" though, so it's probably the same deal as Coral Orgy. The Avey stuff is hard for me to picture with the full band. The next possibility is that they will debut new stuff on the ST tour, which I doubt since Deak and Geo aren't there, they wouldn't benefit from "refining" the songs as much. I do predict that they will go back to the refining-live-before-release way of doing things, which means this album is a long, long way off imo.
Separate ramble/thoughts about what I personally want that could be somewhat controversial i dunno: I don't want the next album to be without Panda. I'm not a fanboy but, he can contribute great things, he doesn't have to play stuff too tied to the sequencer like people have been accusing him of since Tomboy. It is possible, in my mind. The music box material is making me miss him, partly because it sounds more to me like an extension of Eucalyptus than an AC album. Eucalyptus is a great sound but there are things I don't like about it like the really upfront, clean vocals, and it seems really unfocused. Both those things carried over into the Music Box stuff. And I think with all four of them they will challenge themselves to make it focused because they were aware it was a problem in CHz.

probably just trickier balancing 4 people's energies as opposed to just 3.
id be really surprised if we dont hear at least some of the music box songs on future tour(s)/album(s), like magicians, try, peanut butter, prester john and defeat are too good to just be played twice. i think "site specific" is a loose terms, like ya we'll never hear them quite the same way cuz i doubt the extra musicians who were there will tour with them and they jammed on some instruments that were specific to that site, but i think some of those songs are gonna be around now... maybe..

defeat is the next banshee beat. if avey solo songs like midnight special, dream of choice (lost boy i think?) derriere in the frosted air saturdayys and defeat and the path are on one solo album it might just be one of the greatest animal collectives to ever be. holy fuck. this is all just idealizing but damn. fuck

cant tell if i want avey to do a solo LP of his recent live set stuff first or for them to hurry and get the band back together to record album versions of this Music Box set of songs first... preferably both quickly cuz im spoiled. seems like theyre in the middle of all doing solo stuff tho, so glad to have the music box bootleg in the mean time... best case scenario it leads to a dvd/official live recording as well as setting up the vibe for the next full band sound, whether any songs carry over or not, which i feel like they should..
but ya they all seem like theyre in an awesome place, but avey especially maybe just cuz it seems like he's writing a shit ton lately. every year this band keeps putting out some of my favorite shit yet im still really surprised. like magicians, prester john, defeat and Sunset for that matter are all some of my top songs from them... /impressed

I appreciate the thoughtful response. I hope that Noah is able to move away from the sequencer again but the evidence is that it's his overwhelming norm at this point. He's written some brilliant, exciting music over the last ten years (and I think Homies is a real return to form) but very little which gives me the sense of mystery and longing and freedom and ecstacy of the Music Box boot or Meeting of the Waters or Sleep Cycle or Eucalyptus (which I think is not wholly satisfying, couple songs don't seem to fit, couple I find a bit dull). Noah's music now is catchy, some great tunes and rhythms, some cool sounds but it feels more neatly packaged, fewer rough edges, very few surprises, leaning hard into certain tropes. It's all just a bit...conventional. I'd like to see him out of his creative comfort zone again.

Remember when he talked about wanting to compose for a choir or something in his later years? He should do that. Just unaccompanied choir arrangements with him singing lead.
Spoiler: show

Well I mean some songs from the new music box performance feature the most traditional vocal harmony arrangements I've ever heard in an animal collective song, so anything is possible

Yeah it was pretty weird when the band expressed a wish to do each of those things, eh

i used to think more traditional/classical oriented instruments aka strings and reed type stuff didnt belong in AC but after hearing a few things like that in Eucalyptus and now having the Music Box show with accordian/violin/cello/sax I think it'd be kind of awesome to hear them lean into that a bit. i mean all instruments are essentially the same in the hands of these guys, it all becomes one big psychedelic texture anyway... tho ya a fully orchestral thing would be a bit odd/less probable tho

Amen, if love the strings and whatever on the Music Box, as I do on Feels. They're amazing at using other instruments for texture. I just don't want them wanking about with an orchestra or doing an entire concert on ice.

lol ya, doubt that will happen til one of them is in their like 50s an organically arrives at wanting to conduct for an orchestra + moog or something, who knows maybe that's geo's true calling
and i mean panda will inevitably need to revisit the young prayer neo-baroque mode at some point, right? maybe? idk..
