I hate to say it, but now that I have my vinyl copy, I'm a bit disappointed with this EP. I was hoping the muddy sound of the production and the way the vocals sound kinda flat and buried in the mix was a result of the rip - unfortunately, the actual record sounds only slightly better. The vocal melodies are really catchy but I'm really struggling to understand the lo-fi, distorted nature of the production. I like some other artists who work in this style, like Ariel Pink, but I don't think it's a good choice for Panda. His vocals sound best when they're soaring over the top, not buried in the muck IMO. Oh well - hopefully it'll grow on me.

Nod to the folks didn’t quite reach its potential on this. It’s fine on here but god DAMM live is pretty much a different song.
I’m hoping a second ep and then an album that combines them both into a big ol mixtape thing. Kind of like the live show with those bonus beats.

Sunset is my fav Panda solo song since Person Pitch and I can't stop listening to it. Whatever AC do next I hope it's this minimal.

Silly me for expecting the album to not sound like it was mastered by Beethoven.

Anyone aware of a newer, skip-less rip? It shouldn't bother me as much as it does but Math needs to be made whole.

Ha. Fair. I just think it's funny that someone was emailing the record company because they thought there was a defect with their record. Not funny at their expense but if I were the musician I would get a big kick out of that.
It was also entertaining to watch people tell themselves it was the vinyl rip.
If you haven't listened on really good headphones yet you're missing out! Love the production, personally.

to each their own I suppose. I am a little bummed at the production, I feel like it takes away from the music a little. That sound never did much for me unless you use it masterfully imo. Like Andy Stott, his sound is made better by huge walls of bass teetering on distortion, yet a few Flaming Lips albums were borderline unlistenable to me because of it.
Different strokes...
I iwll say I am relieved at the less is more aspect of it though. pbvsgr had waaaay too much distractions from what were his best batch of songs imo. But this new material is fantastic and I bet in a big open room, it will be gigantic.

but honestly, I think this EP is wonderful. Sunset made me actually cry and Flight sounds about as good as it could have.

I'd say each song is better than the last, which makes it a great record to listen to for half an hour. I don't much like Flight, it sounds the most Greaper to me, and the melody sounds like one of his 50s style nursery rhyme vocals, but goofier, no real emotional impact from the tune, kind of like Rosie Oh. It's no second half of Take Pills. I like the bass, though and it's catchy enough, got a bit of momentum to it and doesn't outstay the welcome.
After that, everything is great, though. Each one more up my street than the previous and Sunset is perhaps his best song since - ooh - Bullseye? I would have said Jabbawocky but he ABSOLUTELY FUCKED IT. Selfish Gene and Tropic of Cancer are both stunners, too, but anyway, it's a fantastic song, as is Nod to the Folks, and they both point to something different for him, both in terms of instrumentation and production and the vocal style. Really understated and almost casual. He's long had the this sermon kind of singing, very insistent and emphatic. This is the opposite. I fucking love it.

Just wanna say I love Flight
Can't say goodbye
Goodbye good crew
So I won't say goodbye
Goodbye to you.
There's a moment in sunset that blows me away
When he almost whisper sings "we only have ourselves to blame"

Remember the Cheap Treat remix? I think this was the first time he manipulated the sound of his voice the way he did on the harmonies on ADWTH, with some kind of formant shifter. I assume that's what's making the pitched-up vox sound more like a human falsetto, but kind of in the uncanny valley. Now he's making the lower harmonies sound unnaturally low. What's next, the middle?!
(If you haven't listened to this, it's like Boneless where he took a sample from the source material and wrote a whole new song. One of his better songs from the last few years.)
Spoiler: show

no skips would be amazing. either way i can't stop listening.
part of the math is easily my favorite Panda ever. I can't get enough. the lyrics are the fucking tits too. healthy, hopeful cynicism with some sharp jabs followed by encouragement. like "hey, shits fucked but we could easily do better"

honestly it's not surprising to me that they would give such a low score to a release that's not going to make anyone any $ on streaming services or digital downloads, pitchfork sold out to our corporate overlords long ago when they were bought by conde nast and now their only real purpose is to perpetuate that industry
I think the vinyl-only thing is really going to dampen how the EP is received by a lot of critics, it sorta makes it seem like inconsequential fluff. and that's a shame because these songs are pretty amazing

I called the record store in Sherman oaks and they said they had no idea to order so many...said they were sold out when its said they'd have them in store on release day
Grrr the exclusivity of this record is kinda ruining it for me
Like, whatever fine I don't even want it anymore

Certainly someone on here has a usb output record player. Mine only has RCA and I must've lost my RCA to 3.5 cord... I'm happy to provide a rip this weekend, but I feel like usb output would be better.

I vaguely recall JFW7 posting a bunch of YouTube links that were printed on the sleeve? Is that on all of them? What was that about?

finally home to listen to the vinyl and it sounds so incredible. the sort of thinness i felt with the rip is pretty much gone. and the shit bangs.
this shouldnt be too surprising since the vinyl masters of all of the AC domino releases are the best sounding imo, but yeah, so glad to hear this as intended.

wowee hadn't heard that cheap tricks remix before, very interesting but can't say i'm a fan of the vocal fx.
have given Homies a few listens now, it's pretty slammin'. overall digging the minimalism and blown out bass. can't say i'm not bummed about the ending of nod to the folks, though. feel like i'll forever fill in the higher vocal part. curse u inflammation of demo.
favorite is Part of the Math so far, especially the ending. wish it went on forever!
i'm on the tuesday arrival boat with everyone which is def aggravating... but planning on a lil listening party with my friends next weekend so looking forward to having a day with the homies with the homies. should be fun.

Double posting to assert to whoever was calling people "arrogant" for thinking the original release format could sound improved, they are wrong. Specifically, the b-side is a revelation. I hope a higher quality rip comes out for everyone soon.
The train rumble at the start of shepard tone is overwhelming.
The bass in nod to the folks is fantastic.
Sunset is a revelation where it previously sounded kind of thin to me.

V glad to hear the record sounds great, didn't doubt
Tracking says Tues arrival, but found a local record store via the website that has a copy. Gonna call in the morning to see if it's still there and might just buy it just cuz I don't think I can make it thru the long weekend without a copy lol. Unless someone actually posts a decent rip, dammit
