probably for the same reason avey gave for eucalyptus, which is that they just want to get the music out there. and also these are smaller scale releases so the dudes/label probably don't think it warrants a big rollout

the vinyl-only thing also makes it seem more like a random release just for diehards than a true follow-up to Grim Reaper

it won't be reviewed too I guess, weird that Domino's said okay to this. Like Dave not releasing singles or video to promote his solo albums (he did made one but long time after the record droped). It seems that they want to keep it low.

Pretty sure this is a low key for the fans only type of deal. Domino went all out with the Greaper promo.

Limited edition - 100 copies, I read. Tie-dyed vinyl with a hand-stitched sleeve made from Cypriot papyrus. I'm looking forward to grinding a few Ethiopian beans and flipping my Aeropress inverted cold brew style to accompany my first listen, while riding my fuckin Penny Farthing.

panda makes music thaat is like a nice, fast car... a car that a more eclectic-oriented driver might appreciate. its like star wars in that star wars in a car of a movie. its fast and loud and enjoyable.. explosions. intergalactic sound-design and speed bikes... there are some feels tho, like 2-5 moments where there are feels throughout the whole experience. its a quality experience. kind of like peter gabriel in the 80s. doo doo baby

i see that bull moose is advertising an "indie exclusive" and bleep is selling a "bleep retail exclusive".

That's interesting actually, I was thinking there could be reasoning behind the vinyl only thing if there were different versions and he wanted to keep it a surprise. Maybe like the ATP rehearsals where we got two different performances. And it would encourage sharing of various vinyl rips

But, I mean he could do that with CDs as well

I was thinking of this too and also about Stan's post - at least I think it was Stan- saying (forgive my paraphrase) something like: for the sake of the future of his music career, it better be a good release.

The lack of publicity and absence of internet hype almost makes me wonder if it's designed as a release for his established fan base, without grandiose hopes of drawing new fans. Maybe that's why it's such a unique (vinyl only) release - the diehards like us will get it, but others...? Label maybe didn't have to put that much into it, just enough to pay for itself. I'm not sure of the cost/sale balance.
That global rollout was so big and hype building for PBVGR, with one station at a time rolling out a tune. This like a whisper in comparison.

Whatever... I'm ready, but I wonder if this one is aimed for the homers and not the masses. I have been hiding from the boots, so the suspense is killing me, personally.

It's an interesting juxtaposition seeing as Parr of the Math is the most iTunes TV ad music he's ever made

i dont see why this "better be good" for the sake of his career. every release he's had has been incredibly well regarded. it's not like he's on his last chance and needs a good one to stay above water or something(?). such a weird perspective.

Hmm, it's not true that every release has been 'incredibly well regarded', at all.

Eponymous debut - flicker of acknowledgement.
Young Prayer - modest positive response.
Person Pitch - enormous critical response, all-time alt classic, massively influential.
Tomboy - positive critical response and attention, with disappointment from some quarters.
Greaper - modest/generally positive response, less critical attention, more disappointment expressed than with Tomboy.
Homies -???

Bit of a bell curve, frankly. From the boots, this is a continuation of the Greaper sound, but less immediate. I'm not sure how it's going to go down, obviously, but I feel that it's not going to turn many heads unless the studio recording is a departure. The format is more exclusive (literally) than anything he's done since the Tomboy boxset. The title seems to be acknowledging that he's preaching to the choir with this one and the limited release further supports that.

It's an interesting decision at this point in his career. Swallow at the Hollow suggested a different future direction but that hasn't happened.

Eponymous Debut - eclectic mixtape from off-beat new comer
Young Prayer - Raw psych/folk of staggering depth and inventiveness
Person Pitch - Tour de force of melody and vocal performance, coupled w/ perfect selecting, dub production
Tomboy - Fully expanded vision & collection of perfect song and lyric writing, arranging, performing, producing; featuring complex harmonisation and raw emotional insight
Grim Reaper - Bright, flat and hard-edge abstract pop, heavy on classic hiphop and dub production, furthered by kaleidoscopic lyrical insight
Homies - Mono throwback to classic dubplate riddims, straight from wax with vocal styles spat out in the doodoo, only for the good crew, no crybaababys here please

I just realized how fucking sick Nod to the Folks is earlier today. I'm so hyped for this release. Most of panda's output since Tomboy has followed a pattern of being incredible in live performance and then seeming not fully realized to me in studio, but I'm so high off these boots I'm gonna ignore the history and double down on this being a 10/10 release. These songs can't fail dammit!

I was only addressing the point about reception and whether his solo work has all been 'incredibly well regarded', which it hasn't.

I don't think this is make or break at all, I think he's already faded from critical favour, as have AC. I'm just interested by the move to do 'one for the homies'.

I'm not sure if this assessment really matches how it went down

http://www.metacritic.com/music/tomboy-2011/panda-bear
Tomboy - 77 based on 37 reviews, 28 positive 9 mixed
Greaper - 82 based on 34 reviews, 33 positive 1 mixed

while Greaper does have less overall reviews here, it still manages to have more positive ones.

I'm happy to be corrected, in that case. Marginally less attention, but marginally more positive. Fair enough. I hold my hands up, that was not my perception at all. So his career is a series of modest peaks and troughs, then, with one conspicuous peak eleven years ago. Interesting. He's possibly due a trough, by that reasoning. Fascinating trajectory. Looking forward to listening to find out. Maybe he's in the thick of a purple patch, on the basis of that Metacritic score.

Greaper was quickly forgotten about and I've seen plenty of dissent from fans online. Doubt it made too many year end lists either

man, you guys have terrible memories. it almost certainly suffered from "released in january" syndrome for end of year album list placement, but it still did:

#2 album of the year on gorilla vs. bear's list
#22 on pitchfork's list

http://www.albumoftheyear.org/album/221 ... reaper.php
#2 / Gorilla vs. Bear
#12 / FLOOD
#13 / Diffuser
#20 / Time Out London
#21 / Pretty Much Amazing
#22 / Pitchfork
#22 / Under the Radar
#30 / Treble
#45 / Uncut
#48 / FACT Magazine
#85 / Piccadilly Records

I think one thing that factors into this is that AnCo hype has definitely faded and Painting With was quickly forgotten, so maybe it's easy to conflate that with Grim Reaper. But I def think Panda is still well regarded and kind of a 'name' in this corner of the music world. Pitchfork also did a massive feature on him during the Grim Reaper press cycle

Part of the reason why this release may not be getting as much attention is it’s brevity. I doubt Noah intends it to be the proper follow up to Greaper, just as MotW is not really regarded as the follow up to Painting With.
This is an EP, an exotic tapa, hopefully a scrumptious one, and maybe by the end of the year we’ll get another one to pair it with

totally. plus, with a vinyl only release, there is a finite amount of money domino can make back on it. they can't go crazy on promotion when there's no future streaming revenue to take in.

i bet we'll see a splash this week, though.
