what's fascinating to me about sonic's production is that, while i largely agree with stanshant that some tracks were gutted via over production, most tracks were enhanced greatly thru the same process. i wonder why that is

tracks like crosswords and mr noah blossomed beautifully in the studio! and i love everything sonic did with tomboy and congratulations. and the majority of the PBMTGR era tracks...except a few. baffling to me how the same production process can have drastically different outcomes. i guess some songs just didn't mesh with that production style? idk

i think there must be some small degree of objectivity to what stanshant said too because the same tracks that he felt were improved (selfish gene, jabberwocky) are the same ones that i felt that way about. nadir was my favorite track on the bootlegs hands down, and easily my least favorite on the album. i was dumbfounded when i heard the studio version for the first time. how anyone can listen to that huge beast of a track on the bootlegs and then listen to the flat, stale, artificial sounding studio version and think that the production is good is beyond me. just listen to a few seconds of each side by side:

also i don't like the argument 'now you have two versions!' that people say to people who don't like how stuff turns out in the studio. like yeah, we have two versions. a great live one and a shitty studio one lol. i wanted two GOOD versions! lol

Some Ppl think cilantro tastes like soap. Some people aren't that crazy. Nadir was my whole lifestyle when he was playing it live and I kind of couldn't be happier with selfish gene so like IDK what to tell you. Those misc samples in it kinda make it for me. Little sonic details that couldn't be in the live one. But Ya like the live one is still amazing af. Can I picture a faces in the crowd that is more chill like he live version or a ctys that has the slow build up of vacuum ? Ya but an artists intention with a recorded track goes a long way for me. Dude didn't want a drumless build up for ctys and I respect that.. tho that might be my only complaint that is like that. When the artist is happy with something that goes a long way toward me feeling also content with it if that makes sense. U just get an overly intimate view of the process when u r a hxrdcxre fan who listens to boots u spoiled brats. ( <3 ). . Music criticism for the burger king generation

kinda weird that a few very valid criticisms of Panda's most recently work are met with such vitriol, but you can go in the Avey thread, talk about Panda for 3 pages, and say inflammatory shit about Avey without anyone so much batting an eye...

and this is despite the fact that when you the 2015 - 2017 output, you start to notice a trend regarding the special, unique and magic recapturing releases (MotW, Sleep Cycle, Eucalyptis, Mothlight Boots) and the middling to bad ones (Painting With, PBVSGR, The Painters)

yeah come to your senses and faces in the crowd are both good examples of tracks where i liked the live versions and also liked the studio even tho they were different, although i would have also liked to hear studio treatments that were more dynamic like the live versions

maybe because you joined a week ago and didnt have to sit through 3 years of people whining about the same things re: pbvsgr production sounding flat/lifeless/bad.

they would be met with less vitriol if they weren't the same things that have been complained about in the same way in every thread.

What bothers me is that any criticism of Panda Bear's music whatsoever, even outside of "lifelessness" is shot down instantly for some reason I can't quite figure out. I'd like to put forward the notion that the biggest problem with Panda's recent output is that he's made the exact same song over and over again. Even just breaking down Painting With, Avey's tracks are better across the board. I get that people have opinions, but what I don't get is that the Avey thread can be 3 pages of Panda discussion followed by every criticism of Avey under the sun and no one gives a shit, but any negative thing about Panda is met with a dogpile of naysayers

...this is literally what people have been discussing for the past page. Forumers love to be bootleg snobs it's like we get it u heard this song first to the point that u feel u have more ownership over a song than the artist does it's like leaving yelp reviews on a creative process. Not trying to shut down ppl making the argument just saying this is such a tired and banal criticism to level at this point and the band themselves have addressed it like been there done that

I find it irritating to hear someone say an any artist "has written the same song over and over again" when its clearly not the case. That's just like your opinion, man.

I think a more accurate thing to say about Panda's PW era is that he uses a lot of the same musical features in the tracks: hocketing and fat synth bass are the most obvious ones. I won't walk anyone through why "Hocus Pocus", "Summing The Wretch" and "Natural Selection" are completely different musically.

However they do occur on an album which has the more homogenized production style they've used more recently but also on Campfire Songs or Feels. I think this has to do with the album being like a "painting"; the songs are parts of a whole. Whereas a record like SJ, and imo MPP, is more like a meal or buffet spread with different types of options (more obvious variances in tone, emotion, tempo, dynamics throughout).

Same song over and over? Or just songs on the same record? Listen to The Ramones dude.
PS if you criticize Avey I shun you.

edited for elaboration

I agree with almost everything you said except for the part about PW being homogeneous and MPP not being.

PW feels like a collection of songs, MPP feels like a cohesive collection of songs.

Boy do I have egg on my face. Thank you. I can't believe I've been listening to Painting With as "Lying in the Grass" for 45 minutes since last February. God. I'm an idiot.
