I think probably none of us can predict what their next move is

but it's fun to guess, right? you're probably right about the next big studio AC album being possibly far off in the distance, and when you break it down, the last few things they've released/performed have each had wild circumstances like you said.

i guess what made me think that was the fact that we've been hit with the avey boot, coral orgy, and motw all in the same year so it's easy to say "AC is going meditative" without thinking about the circumstances of each

:negative:

Mate, just because you're best buds with Sonic Boom doesn't mean the last two Panda Bear albums aren't pretty average for AC.

Edit: 'aren't' rather than 'are'.

Hmm maybe but moop's anti-discourse 'FUCK THE HATERS' is antithetical to a FUCKING FORUM MATE.

Yes, I think ODDSAC is their last true masterpiece (apart from Panda Bear's albums), even if Keep, TTG and Honeycomb/Gotham contain really great songs. I feel like Honeycomb/Gotham is the transitional moment in their career, Honeycomb being an awesome song and Gotham showing, nearly for the first time in Animal Collective discography, some weakness.
Kinda Bonkers gave me also a little bit of hope but I must admit it was surely in comparison with Gnip Gnop / Hounds of Bairro, which was disappointing.

Even if I don't enjoy Meeting of the Waters' melodies and experimentations as much as pre-CHz material, I'm really pleased they go back to their emotional side. It sounds fresh and, for the first time in 5 years, I feel like I've still some elements to discover after repeated listens.

are you saying they have not had emotion in their music in the last 5 years? not sure i'd agree there just thinking back to the lyrics and themes in CHz

No, I'm not saying there's no emotion at all but much less than before. But I was only speaking about the music, not the lyrics. Overall I feel like it lacks some deepness, for example, in terms of production or atmospheres. It's like their "craziness" had become a little self-parodic since 5 years. Anyway, I'm not pessimistic. I like this new EP and I really loved Panda Bear's last album so I know they're still capable of making great albums. :)

Did anyone notice that Avey Tare says "I'm a Man of Oil! Jesus Christ!" at 2:10 in "Kinda Bonkers"?? I wonder if Kinda Bonkers was (lyrically) composed whilst in the Amazon also.

Blue Noses is such a goddamn masterpiece. Avey's prolonged wordless sigh toward the end of it has so much emotion it gets me every time

i got an underwater ipod shuffle recently and went for an hour long swim on wednesday listening to all of meeting of the waters while underwater. good experience.

scrambledeggs, totally agree. i think the lack of effects on the vocals really adds to the rawness of it all

I really liked this EP because I'm not only a huge fan of field recordings, but I like when I can clearly hear the band re-synthesize elements of each others songs. While you can hear the obvious Avey songwriting, it also sounds a bit like it's his take on what Deakin was kind of doing too. With the looping but evolving song structures, natures sounds, and mostly unaffected vocals + guitar. It also makes me think this is probably similar to that high school project Geo and Avey worked on many years ago.

What a cool release :)

so after seeing the documentary, i wonder if this was purely a live recording or if they embellished anything later on. i think not, but curious if this has been discussed or not.

Gotcha, which makes perfect sense. They're always talking about being meticulous about the mix and given how things were recorded, I can especially imagine it taking a while in this case

Listened to this on isolating headphones yesterday and it was absolutely incredible to hear all the details of the field recordings so closely. Love hearing Avey play acoustic guitar again as well. (I guess the last time was Pullhair?) Both Geo and Avey are at the top of their games on this, amazing EP!

I really love that scene where Avey learns how to make a bird call with a piece of grass on his tongue and then later we find that guide making the noise in the song Anaconda Opportunity when they play in the canoe. I legit thought it was a weird bird when I heard the song first before watching the doc. So glad they did this.

It deserves a proper studio version. I love what's on here and believe it's one of the best AC tracks I've heard in a long time. I really hope they do something minimal like this next time but give it a band feel.
