there's a thread for this in the live subforum but not everyone ventures there, figured I'd make a thread here for more discussion cause I've been listening to it nonstop, can't get over how great it is

it's like feels meets 2011 down there tour meets glasslands, have not been this psyched on AC since the first pbmtgr boot

pal child hits me so hard with the 'my heart is open to it now, i like it to be so special to me, but I can't take it right now'

me and the bubble might be my fav 'im getting old now, will I keep floating?' :negative:

dream of choice sounds like great single material to me 'The thoughts of sheeeee are a mysteryyyyyy' FUCK such a banger

uncle donut is unlike anything AC has done yet, it's like pumpkin gets a snakebite meets popadam, so nuts

the LOW LOW LOW LOW part of happy daze is constantly stuck in my head

anyone else going crazy over this boot?

I mean, I've absolutely adored everything recently, but Avey's new stuff is just on that LEVEL.

Honestly man that is such a loaded dismissive comment.

The Grim Reaper boots, as with the Tomboy boots, are so much more powerful and emotive than the bland washed out studio recordings.

I don't know what on Earth Noah was thinking and as much as I appreciated Sonic Boom's posts and enthusiasm, he evidently has very different opinions on music and production. The recordings sound flat as a pancake, lifeless and colorless. I'll never forget how shit Jabbawocky turned out and anyone who claims it's even a fraction as good as the bootleg is no doubt the happiest, most oblivious of men.

Also, Avey's new material is really exciting. Between this, Sleep Cycle and MOTW... I'm actually excited for the next step in AC's history. There's suddenly a lot of good stuff happening

I know this isn't the PB thread but I listen to the PBVSGR live boots way more than I do the album. Nadir is so improved on the album, I'm still a bit heartbroken by that. It was so powerful at the show (I saw the opening show of the tour), I was so psyched for the album version, and so massively let down....

Sorry to have taken it off thread but here's the point of this one. For the first time in several years, I'm really really excited about what seems to be a fertile and expressive atmosphere around the band.

Why be heartbroken about a lackluster studio recording of a good song that already has a good live recording? The only down side I can think of is the lack of a physical product to listen to. There is no rule book that says we must always listen to official releases and that those releases should be held in a higher standard than the bootlegs. For me, the only studio albums which are significantly better than the best recorded bootleg from a given era are Person Pitch, Sung Tongs and Sleep Cycle. More often than not I prefer the live versions. Having an option to listen to the studio version is an added bonus

This Avey release may prove to be another one of those better studio albums if he is able to nail the production of these dance beats paired with his vocals. So far, based off the Mothlight bootleg, I'm not too sure whether or not I really love this batch of songs.

My mistake was being too polite. I originally wrote 'is a cloth eared c***', which would stand up in a court of law.

Your inane, pithy, facile approach to forum discussion is reassuringly consistent.

Yes this new stuff really kicks. I feel like the band may be going through a second renaissance period. I meant to say that when they posted the Painting Without video but I forgot so I'm saying it now.

Anyhow, I've stopped listening to the boot cos I don't want to be Grim Reaper'd again.

Noah fence but noah hasn't made a good record since 2007 and his songs on PW are the worst hands down and if you look at every truly exciting and interesting recording recently (MOTW, Coral Orgy, Avey Solo) you'll notice they have something in common

...I think I agree with this. After each release it seems more and more like Person Pitch was this weird, pretty perfect one off.

I don't find the quality between pbvsgr to be all that different from person pitch and am surprised at the level of negative posts I've seen recently about the record. I gave myself deomitis big time with the 2013 boots and still love the LP tons.

But that's not what this thread is about. We should be talking about what a boss Avey is and how everything he has done recently is gold. Not that it's gold bc panda isn't on it.

Edit- lizard beat me to it with less words.

person pitch wasn't an album, it was a singles compilation. i disagree with the value judgment being made, but the album-crafting process for tomboy + reaper was fundamentally different from person pitch and i think there's an argument to be made that it's not panda's most fluent way of approaching music

but i think the songwriting effort that produced grim reaper for atp—like athena fully formed from zeus's head—created really great sounds, compelling + intimate lyrics, and those are some of my most-played ac songs after feels. disagreeing with the production values for the finished LP is valid and seems like a separate criticism from saying he's not making good art anymore.

picking on panda's PW tracks seems sorta harsh though and way more subjective; are there really that many people who only love the avey half of the record?

I feel compelled to say that Tomboy is 100% perfect and one of my favorite albums ever

I haven't listened to this entire Avey boot yet for some reason. First track is totally unreal. The other tracks I've heard didn't excite me as much but it might just be the recording quality. I need to listen to the whole thing cranked on good headphones

Person pitch feels like a album ffs. near identical feel/style on all tracks and flows together really well. A album is a collection of songs. That is what PP is. Also saying Panda has not made a good record since that one is lol.

He was on post pavilion and had some of the best tracks on it it in my girls and Brother sport and we know how well received that album was. His other solo stuff since has been has been great as well not quite as good as PP but close. I give Avey the edge for the slighty better songs on PW but Pandas are still good and he adds a lot to Aveys.

Seems to be cool at the moment to bash Panda just because the new stuff without him has been really fantastic like he is to blame in some peoples minds for the direction before that.

Back om topic I really dig the new Avey stuff, looking forward to seeing how this translates from the live setting to record.

I actually prefer Panda's PW songs to Avey's, especially Hocus Pocus, Summing, and Recycling which are my favorites on the album. Also New Town Burnout, his songs on ODDSAC, and all of his MPP songs were killer, so it's totally harsh and unfair to say he hasn't done anything good since PP

I do agree that each studio Panda album has been less exciting than the previous one, though, maybe not because they're actually worse but maybe because some of the novelty has been wearing off. It'll be cool to hear him go in a totally new direction for the next one. Also regardless of how you feel about Panda lately it's always cool to hear output from different combinations of the members of AC to better pinpoint what each brings to the table, so for that reason alone I'm excited about what the other guys sound like without his influence

Avey has always been my fave and the boot has me really stoked but I'm not letting myself listen to it again for fear of demoitis

I agree with scrambledgreggs that panda needs to change, he does need to explore other areas of sound. He is staying in his comfort zone. Would dig something non heavy electronic from him. He needs tp not work with Sonic Boom again as there is not much else to go.

I do kind of want to see a full blown Avey, Geo and Deak release, I think it is good for the band if the line up is more interchangeable for the next few records. freshens it up.

i think, a less harsh thing i shouldve said, is that the quality of the band has dipped the more noah has been in the drivers seat. I would actually really prefer for the next AC record to just be Dave, Brian and Josh while Noah did his own thing.

that being said, I am so into this avey stuff. It's my favorite stuff ive heard from these boys in ages. (to be fair i love every single thing they've put out, just some less than others)

For balance - and I'm someone who's been beating the 'it's Dave's band' drum for several years - I think Noah elevated the band creatively, critically and commercially with the strength of his songwriting on MPP. It's hard to overstate how fucking incredible the early MPP boots were and how well received they were. The anticipation for that album was up there with anything I've experienced, and when it actually released, so so many people fell in love with those songs. As much as I love Dave's contributions, it was essentially the Super Saiyan evolution of Person Pitch. House, Daily Routine and Brother Sport reached particular heights which they will never again scale. It's not my favourite of their music but it does something very special. I don't think he's struggled to break the shackles of Person Pitch as much as the chunky, anthemic songwriting formulae of MPP.

idk man i liked the mr noah EP but grim reaper doesn't really do it for me. it seems like his best work followed a burst of major changes in his personal life (the death of his father, moving overseas, getting married, and having a child, all within 2-3 years of each other) which allowed for a great deal of inspiration that he just doesn't have anymore

The Grim Reaper live shows were the real deal. Noah still has it in him when he's out there on the stage. On his next album, he just needs to take a risk just for himself and wade into the deep end of the ocean

This is the best thing anyone's said since you all started beating the shit out of noah

I really love tomboy, it's my favourite pb release. pbvsgr feels a bit soul-sucked and bloated to me but I guess that's mostly from listening to boots too much. idk, that's a really negative thing to say but basically it's my least favourite thing any of the dudes have put out in the last little while

Painting With, as divisive as it was, is also a great album. I don't listen to it much at the moment because I spun it soooo much when it came out, but it still sounds super fresh and tight to me. I think the people saying "panda's half is shite" or whatever need to lose that perspective and try to hear the songs together maybe... like, stop dividing the songs up like that because then you're setting urself up for a comparison before it even needs to be made.

Maybe hocketing's not your thing but it's not like you've never listened to something that turns you off and learnt to hear through it. this is Animal Collective ffs
