Danse is AC's most accessible release, in that you access it and immediately understand you will never listen to it again

By far???

You serious?

Yeah, imo Hollinndagain is one of the better albums ever released. I'd have Feels and STGSTV as close second and third, respectively

Hollinndagain being your favorite isn't what shocked me. The addition of "by far" is what threw me for a curve ball.
But if you truly mean it then I guess that is a very unpopular opinion

My hollinn love is 100% serious. in my books nothing AC has ever released has come close to the hollinn lablakely dress. I could listen to that song forever and never get tired of it. Not to say I don't love other eras and albums, but Hollinn is a standout for me

The last AC or AC-related release I loved was Water Curses. I've enjoyed stuff since then but mainly zzzzzzzzz

Tomboy was meh and sounds like it's being played through a wet towel

PBVGR is a little bit better but still kinda zzzzzz

Sleep Cycle is probably the best thing since Water Curses

Noah was married first so is therefore 'more' married.

In answer to your other question, Brian.

Panda Bear's songwriting alone makes him one of the most important artists of our time; everything else is just the cherry on top.

Painting With would be perfect with this tracklist:
1. Hocus Pocus
2. Vertical
3. Hounds of Bairro
4. On Delay
5. The Burglars
6. Spilling Guts
7. Summing the Wretch
8. Golden Gal
9. Recycling
10. FloriDada

(Gnip Gnop/Lying in the Grass)

Sleep Cycle's critical success is at least partially attributed to nostalgia, especially in the wake of PW (This also goes for recent appraisal of CHz).

Feels is the most "pure" Animal Collective album.

PBVSGR is a modern classic, even though some songs on the EP are better.

damn, i mean i'd consider person pitch to be pretty important, but saying he's one of the most important songwriters of our time seems like a stretch, man... good in your eyes = / = important
then again, this is the unpopular opinions thread lol

PP is important, but my opinion is based chiefly on the PBVSGR-era and his PW-era songs.

There is no way to have an objective opinion on artistic importance unless you base that importance solely/primarily on critical/commercial success.

I am painfully aware that my opinion is unpopular, but the title of this thread made me feel comfortable sharing. Thank you for your response.

You can't remove Lying in the Grass from the track list and call it perfect.

I think influence and importance are two different things, where influence is mostly objective and importance is mostly subjective. I should've realized you meant influence from the beginning. I guess you didn't like my tone, but there's no need to call names.

AudibleKayak wrote:

IMO:
Recycling > Hocus Pocus = Hounds of Bairro > Summing the Wretch = Spilling Guts > Lying in the Grass > Natural Selection

PW should really only have 10 songs at most, to really get that Ramones-vibe, so it had to get cut. I think it pairs well with Gnip Gnop. But if the track list is otherwise perfect to you, feel free to swap it.

Ok I know this is getting into the argument of defining terms and I know that's where arguments should end, BUT. Surely importance in the music industry is based around influence? Like if you really love a tiny band from your home town, but if they never get heard by anyone then you could argue that they're not important, no matter how genius their music may be.

Unless you mean personally important to your own life in which case what you're saying (about it being subjective) makes a lot more sense.
But if you mean important to the world then I agree with demonclusters that importance and influence are in many ways joined at the hip.

I think PB's songwriting is important to my life. I think it is important to the world, though I am not sure it will be widely appreciated as I appreciate it in my lifetime (I hope it is).
Spoiler: show
I don't necessarily believe that importance to the world is tied to influence...rather, influence is just the public acknowledgement of that importance.

For example, take Moby-Dick, published in 1851. By the time the author, Herman Melville, died in '91, it was completely out of print and had only sold 3.2k copies. Now, in 2016, it is seen as classic literature, sold in bookstores across the world. Or, take the song "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" by Crash Test Dummies. When it was released in 1993, it was a #1 song in 7 different countries, selling 1M+ copies worldwide. It's placed on at least three "Worst/Most Annoying Songs" lists since then.

Do you see what I mean? Importance is very subjective. The only way you can even try to quantify it is with an objective measurement like influence, which can only account for the zeitgeist. How successful (critically/commercially) or influential the art was at the time of its release, even many years after, has no bearing on its actual quality.

In which case, given that roughly half of Greaper is mid-tempo aimless earworms, I don't expect it to have any influence or importance on any scale. Arguably, Tomboy's minimalist 'three good things' approach could have a certain formalist influence, at some point, and Person Pitch has already undoubtedly been one of the major contemporary influences which even Noah hasn't been able to shake off in his own work, which now play as dumbed down rounded edge versions of the layered 'tracky' house influenced production and cavernous harmonies which he stumbled upon with Person Pitch.

Regardless of your opinion of his recent stuff, it's true that person pitch is sort of his legacy and has the most musical importance. i dont really think pbvsgr will be looked back on as an overlooked masterpiece of some kind, because plenty of people love it a lot, and it got good reviews / plenty of publicity. it doesnt really "push boundaries" though, it's a very panda-bear-being-panda-bear album. i personally like the greaper era a lot (even if i think the album pales in comparison to the live shows at times), but i wont deny that person pitch is likely the most important thing he'll do (and it's my favorite, though, like i said, that's a separate category).

i gotchu reuben :smoking:

edit: also, dominos, dont want to come across like im picking on you. just workin out your reasoning

Not only that, but Dave is leagues better than than Noah as a songwriter and especially as a vocalist. His songs are the ones that I connect with, that give me tingles on all parts of the emotional spectrum. Panda's material feels staid and monochromatic by comparison.

In terms of lyrics and vocal melody, "What Would I Want? Sky" is one of my favorite songs from these guys. However, I agree that it's overrated on account of a weak arrangement.

Also, Enter the Slasher House is the group's best post-MPP release and Feels is the group's weakest pre-MPP release.

This seems to be the popular opinion on here actually. I certainly agree with it
everything but the track sequencing i suppose, i actually like how its sequenced a lot, but the production of a few of the tracks (BBCM, boys latin and... selfish gene *cringes*) keeps it from being great for me
