I love this, Geo gives the final word on Beach Boys comparisons:
wrote:
Almost every Animal Collective review in some way, shape, or form brings up the Beach Boys and Pet Sounds.
We get asked about Pet Sounds all the time. We like that record. We love the Beach Boys. So it's always been a tricky question to answer, because I don't want to put down . . .

I mean, yeah, who doesn’t like the Beach Boys?

I think the thing was . . . when the first Pet Sounds reference happened, it was around our fifth album, Sung Tongs, and at the time, we actually were listening to a lot of Beach Boys. We had grown up knowing Pet Sounds and the early surf stuff. But if you're a record nerd, you eventually start to discover this post-Brian-Wilson-domination era of the Beach Boys, in the early ’70s, where Carl and Dennis did a lot of songwriting, and you have records like Sunflower, 20/20, or Friends. That was actually the era of the Beach Boys that we were listening to a lot. So people would be like, ‘Pet Sounds was a huge inspiration,’ and we were like, ‘Eh, sort of, not really.’

At the end of the day, you guys were still able to forage your own thing out of the shadow of that Beach Boys comparison.

Yeah. No disrespect to Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds was an amazing record. But in terms of our iconic records, the ones that the band kind of holds up and puts on a pedestal and says ‘this had a huge influence on us,’ I don't think I'd put Pet Sounds as one of them, as much as we love it, or the Beach Boys. I think what's important for us is, like, The Beatles. The Beatles did a lot of harmonies, too.

pretty good interview where they talk about some of the music they like. The "music they listen to before a gig" section is cool.

Also, I love that they are fans of Wet Hot American Summer.

Does anyone know the interview where Dave talks about how the sax in LITG isn't actually Colin Stetson? I feel like it's lost forever in the giant Painting With thread.

This one been posted yet? Some interesting insights into Dave's grandpa and how his life influenced 'Bagels in Kiev.'

Brian's memory of writing the song with Dave is worth a read too: “When Dave and Noah send me their demos, there are the singing parts and usually a rhythmic guide,” Weitz said of arranging the song. “For that one, Dave just played a single note and we started filling in the chords. Dave kept saying: ‘Minor key. Make it sadder.'”

“The reason we even called ourselves Animal Collective was more as an animalistic and primal energy,” Portner said. “What made it more childlike back then were the themes, the lyrics — the wanting to preserve where we were at then. We saw it as being free, while other people perceived us as being juvenile. Some people hated it.”

someone on the subreddit interviewed panda bear! It's kind of messy because it's translated from portugese, but it's worth reading:
wrote:
It's completely unedited. I had just transcribed the audio Sorry if some words are written in portuguese. I was on my way to translate it.

MM: Do you think it's more difficult to find new stuff to do now than it was in 2001-2002 or do you still feel there's a lot to explore?

PB: I think there's still lots to do. It may seem less obvious to me now, (not that it was obvious before). I guess for me and I'd imagine for the other guys having tried a bunch of different things it becomes more difficult to distance yourself from the past hereas when you're first coming up nobody has any expectations about you you have no history so there's kind of a whole world of possibilities. You can go anywhere. The more you do the more you have to distance yourself from it.

MM: On this tour you guys have been playing really old songs like "Bees", "Loch Raven" and "Daily Routine"...

PB: And Alvin Row which is super old, although we only play half of the song

MM: I personally can't imagine "Bees" or "Alvin Row" being played alongside "FloriDada", "Golden Gal", etc. Do you think there's still something in those songs, something that still means a lot to you or do you do it because it fits thematically with the rest of the songs. Because with Alvin Row I feel it's kind of a popular demand kind of thing.

PB: We do a little bit of that. And not all of us agree on how much of that kind of stuff should be in the set so I think we reached sort of a happy meio termo. I like to play the new songs all the time but there's definitey people at shows who are like "Why didn't you play this one song? I flew three hours to see you and you didn't play this one song". So we'll mix it up a little bit. We try to choose songs we think will fit with the new stuff in some way or we transform them to fit with the new stuff. Alvin Row seems pretty different to me. On the album version I was playing drums with brushes. So we change the old stuff to fit with the new stuff if we can but we try to mix it up a little bit.

MM: You recently announced "Animal Collective Camping Weekend". Is that an idea you came up with during this "Painting With" album cycle or is it kind of an idea you thought about years ago. In 2011 you curated the "All Tomorrow's Parties" festival.

PB: Yeah that was awesome! I only knew about the camping thing about two weeks ago (risos). Dave went to a similar thing that Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) did there and he really liked it. He's been up to Big Sur a lot. We played a couple of times at the Henry Miller Library. It's in the middle of the woods it's really nice up there. Dave was always trying to get us to play up there. Then he saw the Will Oldham thing which was exactly the same thing with some bands playing for a few days. He'd been trying to make that happening for a year mais ou menos and I remember hearing we were gonna play in Big Sur two months ago but I thought it was just playing at the Library again. So I only knew about the Camping thing and all that two weeks ago. Sounds cool to me.

FM: Will there be any "Campfire Songs" on the "Camping Weekend"? PB: Probably not. It's a good idea! If we all lived in the same city maybe we could get stuck like that together quickly but it's hard because we live so far apart.

D: Any additional reason why you chose Big Sur? For me, Big Sur is the book by Jack Kerouac.

PB: It's kind of a magical place, it's kind of like going to Sintra. You just feel there's something in the air there. So I always really liked it there. The thing really is that Dave saw that festival that Will Oldham did and he was like "we should do something like this too". I know he's got a lot of friends there too.

D: Do you plan to do this an annual thing or is it just a one time thing?

PB: For me it's just a one time thing. I would be open to do it a bunch of times if it feels good but as far as I know it's just a one time thing.

MM: "Painting With" and "Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper" were pretty much sample based.

PB: Painting With not so much. With PBVSGR there's a lot of drum break samples.

MM: royalty-free samples I heard.

PB: Oh yeah a lot of that too. I totally forgot about that.

MM: I feel there's kind of a pattern here because Person Pitch was pretty sample based too. Do you think that in the future you will return to a more rock-oriented sound like "Tomboy" or maybe a more acoustic one like "Young Prayer"?

PB: I'd imagine yeah. The two things that I've been thinking about doing for myself were like, one was more kind of the two things you mentioned: one was more rocked out and the other was a little lighter. I don't know how I'd do it but I kind of want to write music for like a chorus of people. I don't know if I wanna sing in it or be a part of it at all. Not having to travel would be nice for a change. But yeah, I could totally see us going back to doing stuff like that. Again, it's hard because you don't want to rethread your steps. You don't want to do the same thing over again. But yeah, I could definitely see me doing both of those things. I mean "Painting With" feels more like a rock-thing to me. I know a lot of Brian's stuff is made by using samples but it's not the samples from a song it's a sample of a guitar, or a coin falling down or something like that. And none of us wanted to use samples in the way that we used them in the past where they're kind of the bed of the song. The samples that we used on this one they kind of take over the song, like the "Wipe Out" sample (on "FloriDada") or the "Golden Gal" sample. It becomes the whole song for a second. That was an intentional move on our part to try to use them in a different way.

FM: "Painting With" is a much more concrete and less improvised record than the previous one...

PB: It's kind of like hyper-concrete everything it really precise.

FM: But the vocals are like an exquisite corpse: You sing something and Dave sings it back. What changed in the composition and recording process of "Painting With" if anything changed?

PB: I remember Dave and I were texting each other last Summer around August a lot of ideas. It's typical for us to have like 35 ideas. Someone's like I want to do this and this and then the next person is like that's cool but I want to do this and this. And then when you get 4 people in there you have this big mixture of stuff that everybody wants to do and it's really rare that you cover all those things. It's usually when we're finished that I can see that like 5 to 10 of those ideas I can see from the beginning all the way to the end and this time wanting to write music for two voices where it kind of felt like they became one was an idea that both of us were into that I feel like I can trace from the beginning till the end. I think he and I went about it in pretty different ways like the style that we chose to do them is really different. You can hear his songs like "Vertical", "FloriDada" where it's kind of like one person goes and then the other person goes and the tradeoff is much slower whereas with mine I wanted to fuse the two voices so it's like they're both singing the same words but different notes and they bounce really quickly off of each other. I gather that to some people it sort of sounds like a mess, it sounds sloppy but I think it's cool.

MM: It's sounds good on the record. Maybe live it can get a little sloppier because it's a different environment.

PB: For sure but I kind of like that about the live versions, they feel way more looser. The album is so hyper-precise to me and that's one of the reasons I was really excited to have Jeremy (baterista dos Ponytail) because he can do really hard stuff but he's got a really kind of like flexible.

MM: Like the things you did on the first two records?

PB: Yeah a little bit more like that. He's way better than me but a little bit more of that kind of style.

FM: How do you make a record when you're separated by whole oceans? Also, it's kind of hard to imagine Animal Collective inside the studio. It feels like everything comes naturally. PB: The studio is definitely my favourite part of the process. I'd say the songwriting and the studio are the reason I do this. And having done it so much at this point I feel like that's where we're at our best. This one [Painting With] and Merriweather [Post Pavilion] were super quick. We had the most extensive demos this time. The original idea was to do 9 songs a piece. We only ended up doing 8 but it turned out to be more than enough. "Golden Gal" was a song he had written before we had started working on stuff. I started January 1st last year and worked until mid-February and then I had demo recordings of all my songs. I kinda wanna put them out at some point because I feel like they're cool different versions of the songs. It's gonna be tough to convince Dave to do it though. The demos were pretty much the song and it was pretty easy to build on top of that and at this point having done so much on our own and far away from eachother we kind of got a system that works pretty well. We do a fair amount of individual work in preparation and then there's always this 2 week to a month period where we're all in the same room putting everything together and seeing what works and what doesn't and then the studio comes after that or before the live shows.

FM: Did the equipment you used change? What kind of things do we hear in Painting With?

PB: I really wanted to use this modular box that I got. I'm really into that stuff because you can create your own instrument. You can pick and choose. There's all these kind of boutique electronics makers that make these little devices. Mine is not a traditional modular synth, there's barely a sound source in it. It's not really a synth it's more like a fancy drum machine. I'll start writing a song by just messing aroung with it until I got a rhythm going and it would pretty much be singing and a bassline and that's how I wrote all the songs, so that's what my setup brings to the table. In the live shows I use an Octatrack which is like a sampler/sequencer which controls all the modular stuff. There's a fair amount of stuff on the record that with only three people we couldn't reproduce live and we don't reproduce everything that's on the record but there was some stuff that we felt the song needed to have that none of us could really play because we were doing other stuff. So they're not really backing tracks but there are sounds and stuff on the Octatrack. Dave plays keys and sings. He's also got a whole bunch of electronic things he fools around with live. Brian I think made all his stuff with a computer and a keyboard, playing these samples and he uses this fancy program to manipulate the sounds but once he had the sounds he put them on a sampler like he's been doing for a long time. So that was it. I don't think there's any guitar at all on the record. We wanted it to be a vocal and drum heavy album. To us it sounds kinda minimal that way but I've heard other people be like: There's so much going on, it's so layered.

FM: Most of your records can be discribed as rhythm and singing and tribal if you want to call it and at the same time it can sound layered. It can be many things at the same time. How's the reception for the live show and the record now that you've been touring for a month?

PB: The shows have been very well received. The album was way worse than I expected. I thought it was going to be pretty good. I feel like I've seen every kind of review you can get. From "I love this, this is really cool" to " This is the worst thing I've ever heard". I feel like it's one of the best things that we've done. I feel like I'll look back at it as one of my favourites.

D: Regarding the album title and the cover artwork, with all the layers and paint references it's kind of the way you write your songs. Is this the title that most definitely describes your music?

PB: Totally! We only started talking about paint halfway through though. And two things happened at the same time. None of us have a technical vocabulary for music. We can't be like " This song is in the key of D". I could but it would take some effort and I can't read music anymore so as a substitute we'll often use imagery or gestures or other ways to talk about ideas we want to translate to each other. For some reason we found ourselves using paint analogies a lot. We'd say "I want to use a sound that feels like you take a paintbrush and paint this really bright red colour over the song". Thinking about painting was there a lot about halfway through. On our friend Brian DeGraw's Instagram we saw this portraits he was doing that looked a lot like the cover. He'd draw a little bit then he'd cut things out and put something else over and then photograph it and we felt that the stuff that he was making really felt similar to the way we were doing the songs. It was kind of a synchronistic moment.

D: Have you done any drawings on the app that you released a while ago?

PB: Yeah, we had to test it and give the approval and I wanted to make sure it worked. I was really afraid that some people were just gonna draw dicks and balls. The original idea was that as soon as you finished the drawings they would go to a website. Thankfully there's been way less dick and balls than I expected.

FM: Can we expect a virtual reality experience to visit FloriDada?

PB: We really want to do some kind of VR thing. I love the VR stuff. I've been really excited about. I only got my first experience with it 3 weeks ago while we were touring. Somebody at the Google offices were making this program called "Tiltbrush" where you paint in 3D. They took us into a room which had cameras that mapped the room. I'd love to do something with that but it's still in the early stages I don't know if it's gonna happen or not.

MM: A sequel to ODDSAC maybe!

PB: Yeah (risos), that'd be awesome! ODDSAC took forever, it was such a labor of love to all of us. I don't know if we want to jump back into something like that again.

FM: We saw it two, three weeks ago. It was a crazy experience.

PB: Yeah it's an intense movie. I think Danny Perez is trying to sell his new movie at the moment. You guys should chek it out!

FM: In Animal Collective and Panda Bear's concerts there's this performative and multimedia aspect. In which way these things translate into this new phase?

PB: I wasn't part of the discussion of what the new stage thing was gonna be like. It's my favourite stage setup that Abby's done (Dave's sister). It was all her work, I think Dave contributed an idea or two but it's mostly Abby's work. And she had a tough time doing it because it costs so much money and specially since our last tour we haven't had that much budget to support something like that but Dave didn't want to step down on the visual side of the show so it was kind of hard but I think she pulled it off really well. Of course I never get to see the show while it's happening but seeing people's videos and pictures it looks pretty cool

D: Your next show here in Portugal will be at NOS Primavera Sound. The last one was at CCB. They're kind of opposite environments. Can we expect at Primavera a very different show than the one you played at CCB?

PB: Yeah. I think the new songs are more energized but Centipede Hz had more dynamics. I feel like these shows are more direct and fast. While we're playing the songs it doesn't feel that fast but when we listen to the recording we're like "Wow we played that really fast!"

FM: Is there any Lisbon in the record or just Kiev?

PB: It's always there because I live here and it makes its way into the music. But not literally there.

FM: You said some years ago that you had plans to open a low-cost pizza place in Lisbon? How is that going (risos)?

PB: Domino's been harsh on my vibe (risos), they moved in, stealing my idea. I'm excited about Domino's, it's the most American pizza that you can get here. And Domino's is really corny because in america it's kind of a shitty pizza and it's weird to be like "Yes, Domino's" but I'm kinda like that. We had it last night, my kids really dig it.

Sweet interview. Even though I'm not going, I'd love it if they played campfire songs at the Camping Weekend.

I could read that reddit interview hourly. PB is pretty candid there! This part kills me though:

"PB: The shows have been very well received. The album was way worse than I expected. I thought it was going to be pretty good. I feel like I've seen every kind of review you can get. From "I love this, this is really cool" to " This is the worst thing I've ever heard". I feel like it's one of the best things that we've done. I feel like I'll look back at it as one of my favourites"

I know this album is kind of divisive for many on here, but I do feel bad it has gotten the goose egg as far as acknowledgement goes. Nobody's talking about it, songs aren't really played anywhere - even on indie radio or blogs. Wasn't there supposed to be another single released in May? Erhm... nope? I hate seeing the beginnings of the best of the "first half of 2016" album lists come out and not even a hint of a nod to Painting With.
Hard not to fanboy out, but I do wish they got a little more cred for Painting With. While it isn't my favorite AC, it's a doozy of an album. Nobody else but Animal Collective could make this album.

Otherwise, enjoy your Dominos pizza, Noah.

I've actually been listening to PW a shit ton. It's getting comfy in my top three favorite AC albums postition. I'm glad the band digs it a lot too because the concerts have been made me appreciate the tunes even more. And as summer continues the music becomes even more uplifting!

This Geo interview is great http://observer.com/2016/02/how-animal- ... ting-with/

Can't remember if it got posted back in February, it probably did and I missed it. They talk about Terrence McKenna a little bit. Geo says Panda is "kind of the least into psychedelic culture" out of the band
