Person Pitch, Down There, Tomboy

When you use a similar methodology and set of parameters for the songwriting, things can sound "samey" or "cohesive."

I can see why you would assume that I guess, but they've stated in interviews that the shift from reverb was because they've used it so heavily in the past. it's about personal change rather than a popularity contest. I certainly don't mean to be rude, but what gives you the notion that "reverb is popular right now"? i'm simply curious...

People usually say something is "samey" when they don't spend enough time listening to it to notice the differences

it's true. To be fair and balanced, I thought it was gonna sound samey after hearing the Amazon samples.

this album actually makes me appreciate Centipede more. I feel like I finally get what they were going for on that and i feel like i've gotten to a point where Avey's late-era songwriting is hitting me hard like it never had before. even the stuff on slasher flicks is sounding way better. It's crazy to think that he's written songs like Roses on the Window, Blind Babe, Pulleys, Amanita, The Burglars, and On Delay so late into his career. lol i might just be in an AC mood tho

but yeah this is a really good album. it wasn't hitting me super hard at first - it was fun to listen to and interesting, but it did seem to lack an emotional component. but then i realized it was because I hadn't built an emotional connection yet, it's only been a week! but this weekend i had one of those moments, where an album just clicks and it's the only thing you can listen to. and I built that emotional connection. reading the lyrics definitely helps, this album has more bite to it than I realized.

^i like that, feel like some people have gone into this album, or other music, expecting it to immediately grant them like "magic feels," or access to some hidden emotional journey. i mean there rlly are some albums that will do this the very first play thru, but like i think it falls on the shoulder of the listener to guide their own emotional response to something... and ya, like u said listening over time and letting that connection happen naturally is the way to go... ive only had this for a week but some of it kinda brings me bak to where i was when i caved and heard the amazon samples (lol) and especially after having seen them live now i can tell the album is making an impression on my life, like any good art

As someone who has never gotten into Slasher Flicks, what about this era made you be able to appreciate it? Gonna try to jam it again soon.

I feel like most of avey's songs on here are on a basic level reminiscent of the songwriting on that album. Like Blind Babe reminds a lot of The Burglars with it's speed and intensity, and Little Fang and Golden Gal are super similar in the "avey doing dope pop with no frills attatched" way. But the good thing about AC is that is kind of a superficial similarity - the albums themselves are really really different. But I think Slasher Flicks fills that long-form, weird AC hole that Painting With doesn't really aim for. So I just appreciate that avey can still write a 5-6 minute track that captures my attention the whole way through. and slasher flicks has a few of those (Roses, Outlaws, A Sender, Your Card) that stand up with the best in their catalog. I'd try it out again, the production is kind of flat for me a lot of the times still, but it really is a good group of songs, with a few duds (Catchy, and the album version of Duplex Trip was improved)

i dig this for sure, i like being reminded of the Amazon samples, I never expect Hocus Pocus to shift like it does cause my brain kind of expects it just to stop lol. i really need to see them live. Chz live was way better than the album because those songs had all the energy with none of the bad qualities of the production

the thing that makes this album better than chz and slasher flicks while still remaining in that odd world is that the melodies actually evoke feelings of positive wonder and excitement. Like their stuff from the 2000's. This album is incredible. I only wish bagels in kiev was longer

This album continues to impress me, really really into it. Keep finding new things to like about it. It feels like 'classic' AC to me in a totally new and fresh way. So stoked to hear these songs live in a couple months

Yeah, my enjoyment of this album is increasing faster than I ever expected. I was so obsessed until the release, which left me liking it but still unsure. I feel like its really enjoyable to listen to. More great parts than I could summarize.

this album really keeps growing on me, particularly the "difficult" Panda songs. So cohesive and unraveling, seems like an entirely different playing field for him even though he dabbled on it with PBVSGR. The lyrics slay as usual, love the disjunction between the morbid/nihilistic lyrics with the playful kid chant style melodies. very cool.

ya i feel the same way abt panda's songs, feel like hes in a totally new zone or something. seems kinda like boy latin, but way different beyond just the fact that he's actually able to sing these arrangements with avey live.

i kinda had this super speculative idea that panda was kinda struggling with where to go with his writing around chz-y era? idk could be wrong cuz like tomboy is incredible, but lyics on "i think i can" and his output on chz made me think he hit a wall with his writing for AC after mpp. like he was done doing the sunny tropical sounding stuff like chores, bro sport and tantrum bard, and like pbvsgr seemed like a whole new thing and a real development for his writing, and this album seems to take that even further almost. feel like all the guys are in a good place, i mean avey himself said he was more stresed out when doing chz and i think u can kinda hear that on the album compared to pw ... so stoked to hear where they go next

I couldn't read the article, but it's funny they used a picture of Deakin to talk about an album he's not on.

I'm actually starting to like that this is getting so many bad reviews for some weird reason. I can't explain it. I never want the dudes to feel bad, but if they don't care then I guess I don't.

yeah i was thinking about that but im really not sure about what he is trying to say with that line lol but i would love if panda did a song (or a entire album!) in portuguese. for someone always looking for change in his work that would be something very new and different

Ok, so based on the reviews, I've got a suggestion as to how they should listen to the album:
1. Slow it down by 50% (so it's not too fast)
2. Listen to it in your bathroom (for reverb)
3. Randomly play other songs every once in awhile (to break up the sameyness)
4. Put some floating candles in your bathtub (for a magical atmosphere)

There are people on reddit who are legit slowing it down and adding reverb to make it sound "better." Someone even posited that, like reversing Pullhair Rubeye, it's actually what the band intended.

Hard to link on mobile, but there's a bit about doing that to Natural Selection in the thread called "Painting With Tracks Ranked RESULTS." The Pullhair comment was in one called "I redid the whole thing" I'm pretty sure.
