Oh yeah one more thing. How does Avey sing like that on the end of Burglars. Wtfffffffff.
i am rly impressed by that part, especially w the panda background. on the first listen was the moment where i said "whoa, nice"...kinda wanted a panda solo on that 1 tbh those panda vox are so good
I also get a lot of Down There tour vibes off some of this, both in terms of the synth sounds and the melodic flavour. Jerome could definitely fit, if it had Noah repeating every syllable on the half beat! Hehe.
Listened to the album again on the drive home from work and I am loving it even more than before. This is a great driving record for sure.
I said it yesterday, and I feel even more strongly about it now: On Delay is amazing. The return of the hushed Avey vocals in the first half makes me so happy.

His vocals there are so percussive. They sound like... When you smack water in a pool.
Much prefer the first half to the second. A worrying amount.
Still having a hard time putting FloriDada and LitG into this record, but that could take weeks. Def overplayed them.
Early doors but I'm not really feeling On Delay. The intro is so good, one of the high points for sure, but everything after fails to excite me in the same way.
Vertical is my favourite track off this and that likely will never change.
I really like the (half in jest?) theory that Recycling uses a load of their old sounds, just heavily effected. Probably not true but a cute idea nonetheless.
I think I might actually know where the dinosaur roar comes from in Hocus Pocus. Haven't checked yet and probably wrong though, long shot.
my fav tracks in order from best to least best:
burglars
recycling
golden gal
on delay
summing the wretch
hocus pocus
natural selection
floridada
spilling guts
vertical
lying in the grass
bagels
itll be crazy if those avey jams never surface... wtf happened to that trilogy u were planning daaave? nah im kidding, i cant complain abt having more ac for years
I can't tell if Hocus Pocus is actually that amazing or if it just feels so good to have another song come on after FloriDada...
THIS.
Forcing myself to finish the back catalog retrospective before diving in. I'm up to Merriweather so there's not much to go. Hopefully this will line up with the arrival of my vinyl so I can experience it on wax first.
Very surreal working into the morning and finding it freebirded out of nowhere around 5! The FLAC is taunting me on my desktop now and skimming all your comments is just increasing the hype!!
This album is sooooooooooooo good. Such a confusing grower but I am LOVING it now, more and more. So chaotic yet precisely carved. So slasher flicks with grim reaper influences, but honed. Could not ask for more from these guys at this point. Great addition to the ac legend.

im having a hard time feeling this record as a whole, there are things i like about it. i really like all the sounds they chose to use for the records, but the mood, melodies, and way panda and avey are singing together i just cant really feel for a full length. mayb things will start to change, but for now, today, im feeling pretty underwhelmed
Totally agree. I am sure I'll end up really liking/loving it after it digests but the lack of variety is surprising. Aside from the constant back and forth vocals, just using the same set of synth sounds or whatever in almost every song makes the album way less interesting than their previous records. There isn't that one super song, as demonclusters said. Which is ok...just different.
this pretty much sums up my first couple listens.
there are some great moments and ideas here with vocal interplay...but it's all so similar and some songs aren't very interesting to me.
Lying in the Grass might be my fav tune and that's a bit disappointing since it was release before the album but it's still a great jam. Also Panda's backing vocals The Burglars is great

after a few listens, i think my favs are hocus pocus, lying in the grass, the burglars, on delay, golden gal and recycling, but i'm enjoying p much the whole thing.
ya for those who might feel conflicted/ambivalent at this point, (doesnt seem like too many..) def hold out for a bit, i think amazon samples/first shitty vinyl prepared my ears a lot for this but its still a lot to swallow at first..
also fldada/litg are almost certainly my least favorite but maybe thats just cuz i got sick of them? not sure how id feel if whole album dropped at once (Ac's fault)
Curious for people not digging it: is this your first time listening to it or did you listen to samples/bathroom flacs/low quality rips? I think if I were listening for the first time I'd be surprised and overwhelmed. Maybe give it some time (if you want)
1. On Delay (putting on delay on the same level as safer/fireworks WHUT?!)
2. Bagels
3. Burgerlars
4. Recycling
5. Hocus Pocus/Natural Selection
6. LiTG/Floridada/Vertical
7. Golden Gal/Wretch/Guts
also theres a lyric in burglars thats like "...*something**something* that don't pay out, they keep on rolling.."
anyone figured out the rest of that line? or others? makes me think about the structure of that song and how no section repeats itself it just keeps changing and moving forward and building momentum and then stops..... damn fine jimmy jammy
1. On Delay (putting on delay on the same level as safer/fireworks WHUT?!)
yo i think i miiiight agree. maybe most emotional avey song for me since fwx... mmaybe, hieroglyph, mr fingers, applesauce. but i think might be better than applesauce
my list atm might be
1. on delay
2. burglars
3. bagels
4. golden gal
5. spilling guts/hocus pocus
6. recycling
7. vertical
8. NS/ StW
9. fldada
10. litg

The more I listen the more I think it's crazy that people think this sound "samey" or "unvaried".
The intro to vertical is one of my favorite things they have ever done.
Like Clams said, I am def getting 2011 avey vibes, especially from the boot dyland recorded in chicago when copeland opened. The percussion on that "lay down in a mist" song sounds just like a lot of the drums on painting with.
This album, like other albums by them, is a culmination of all their previous ideas, but this album seems to take that culmination a step further, by placing certain styles together that normally I would think were mutually exclusive. I kinda already mentioned in a previous post, but the end of golden gals is the perfect example of what I am talking about. Golden Gals is very much a new sound for them, and then the track ends and they leave you with that nostalgic clean sung tongs harmony. It's almost jarring in a way at first, but on my second listen through, it all fits so nicely together imo.
Summing the wretch is one of my favs so far, seems kind of underrated based on what people are saying, but there is a lot to digest right now obviously.I love the snare on this track, and the crazy warbily vocal sounding thing that happens throughout/right at the end. Can't describe it well right now but I think y'all know the thing I am talking about.
