Wait, so will Painting With have any "Avey" or "Panda" songs? Like on the previous albums, there'd be Panda songs like Daily Routine, New Town Burnout, Chores, etc. Those always made me excited, like how the designated Lee Ranaldo songs on Sonic Youth albums were usually the my favorites. Deakin finally getting a chance to shine on Wide Eyed was amazing too.

from what i understand, nope. they did write their own songs (i remember the first, like, 8 songs alternated between songwriters), but most if not all of the songs will include vocal interplay between panda and avey that will make it more difficult to distinguish the primary songwriter.

surprise, AC is doing something different

Anyway, she also loves playing phone games, so i asked if she would like to play the Painting With app. She was cool with it, we took a photo of a busy street in her neighborhood (Germantown) , she put her headphones on, and she was loving it!!!! So full of joy, man. I feel like this music could be used in some real music therapy interventions. Felt so good to see someone just feeling their art and really being uplifted. Go AC!!!

my take (i think they might be singing different lyrics on certain parts):
Spoiler: show
all the pieces where they ought to be,
but it's clear that he don't look like me
Pick a place around the tabletop,
make a push to wake the [momentous/comatose]

Say, you want to say what's wrong, and then quick blow up the cover
There's a way through bogs as long as there's a light to discover in

Like a twisted stick, let's dig thru the sick and find a [lapful?] space.
Since to say.

It's a gut that feels all things unknown
and a link [within/beneath] the brain you know
Not ashamed to say the instinct's there,
but a virtue to deny the [me?]

Know the costs and moves to cause an endeavor, [we've dropped onto something?]
In the law, there's room to move as there's the need to uncover it

As a joker [starts?], let's sift thru the muck and lift this dingy veil.
Same old tale.

Get mixed in this crippling fixture, try and approach the hidden mixtures.
Get mixed in this crippling fixture, try and approach the hidden picture

For a misplaced stash, let's search through the trash and write this ignorant lurch.
Wicked urge.

Raise the gap above a whisper, speak to a sound of spoiling blister.
Raise the gap above a whisper, talk to cure a blistered picture.

The "quick, blow up the cover" part was quite interesting northernchild. I definitely hear that one.

Lots of ambiguity here...

I love it.

the harmonies happening in the second half are exactly what I expect from an AC record in 2016. Lying with the grass is an Avey song as far as I can tell, but then the hockeying stops and avey and panda perform the fusion dance from DBZ and it's like Avey is using Panda's powers to deliver the goods.

and the goods get delivered.

like floridada is a sweet song.
but it's so bublegum.
the grass is AC
I love you geo

I don't know, this one is a Noah song to me. If his over powering voice in the harmonies doesn't give it away, the lyrics surely do. But I could be totally wrong I guess. But I think that's what's so awesome.

one of the coolest things about this song is people can't seem to tell if this is an avey or panda song. I felt the same way about floridada before the band actually confirmed in interviews Dave wrote it. But this song. I think it's an Avey.

the panda songs are gona fucking slay

but the vocal melody is very panda and he is mixed louder in the song than avey is
(I know the latter doesn't necessarily mean avey did not write it (see also frightened studio))

thought it was panda since amazon sample days but im not totally sure. the lyrics do seem pretty pbvsgr-y in a way, if it is avey id say its avey doing his take on pbvsgr.

thought the panda songs were= hocus, lying, natural selection, spilling guts.

and i thought bagels was too but i honestly have no idea. who knows abt recycling. also for all i know on delay could be mostly panda and the amazon sample is just misleading idk..

nice article. avey refers to floridada and vertical as being his songs where he worked on his crazy over-lapping vocal arrangements which i think implies that litg is panda's cuz it seems like he would have mentioned that one too.

i'd think it would be

avey: floridada, vertical, the burglars, bagels in kiev, on delay, golden gal

panda: hocus pocus, lying in the grass, natural selection, spilling guts, summing the wretch, recycling

I know reviews are bullshit and don't matter and whatever, but how are you guys expecting this album to be received? Universal acclaim? Mixed feelings? People not connecting? Fitting like a glove? P4k 10.0?

If Pitchfork didn't give MPP a 10 when it was red hot, then I don't think AnCo are ever getting that coveted Pitchfork 10.

i think it will get universally "good" reviews, it will be somewhat divisive (especially amongst anco fans), and it won't make many appearances in year end lists.

not that I think that the album won't be great, but that I think people's interest in music is mostly a fashion thing and anco hasn't been fashionable in a while.

hahaha thats what i thought actually, guts is the one i'm confused about too.. could be an avey or panda hook. leaning towards panda at the moment maybe? kiev very confusing too as it's a wild card for both and they sound equal on it but maybe avey because Bagels (buy grapes) and grandpa and it's kinda funky like lil fang

I think Lying in the grass is panda, because of the confusing ass lyrics.

Remember when that dude said there was no progression on this shiz? Well, obviously i havent heard most of the album, but just using what i have heard, there is totally progression. LITG is a perfect example. The structure is kinda weird but the song totally builds and evolves. I think FLdada doesn't progress as much, it's sort of your basic verse chorus bridge chorusy type deal, but still that's progression too.

Bout 2 read this article.

Peace n love animalz

ya the lyrics in litg people have parsed here seem in the same style as writing during pbvsgr era. reminds me of sequential circuits and acid wash.

an ya come to think of it bagels does sound kinda little fang-y. i thought it was panda a fist but who knows

I didn't catch who said it above, but the fusion dance from DBZ is the perfect way to describe LITG vocally.

The music, to me, gives me feelings of total curiosity and experimentation that a group of kids might have when they get to paint for the first time in school. I get thoughts of that smell of "preschool" paint and goofy crap that kids make. I love the innocence of it.

BTW that was an amazing article that really starts to dig into their thinking and theory behind their music this time... I wonder if they are playing with time in their music... Just wild thinking... Maybe we are not to think things linearly in that the music is juxtapositioned in time
