Seems to be more or less confirmed by the band / the Deak that they'll be performing solo sets and not DJing, psyched!

HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT. I am totally driving down from Seattle for this, I have always dreamed about listening to a live set while laying on the ground with blanket and pillows- this lineup is unreal. I'm super bummed The Echo show on Sunday is sold out, would be a shame to miss that after driving all that way.

Sweet show... Really dug Avey and Black Dice's sets. Geo was VERY ambient droney. But around this time ppl partying near me were loud as hell. Most brought their own booze and set up camp for the night. Avey (and Drip City before) was a kind of dark(ish), very trippy ambient set.
Sweet visuals on the rafters all night.
Deak was a no show.(surprise!)Brian Degraw covered for him and killed it though, ..with an ambient DJ set. He flipped FSOL "Cascade" in a really awesome way. I think a lot of ppl thought this was Deakin dropping some original music ... lol

Yeah, weird. The reddit post has a lot of people saying that Deakin knocked it out of the park. Some kind of inside joke? Or was the stage dark/not visible for a lot of people?

It was super dim at times and lots of people in a large space. Maybe people mistook Brian Degraw for Josh? I had to bounce early but recorded 5 min of Avey's set. I was right by a speaker so it might have been too much for my phone to pick up but if it turns out to be listenable I'll see if I can post it tomorrow sometime.

Just heard from Josh that he didn't make it out to LA this trip, sadly won't be at the DJ set tonight either.

this was one of the coolest events I've been to in LA except everyone was being so fucking loud and rude. I go to events and booze - I get it, but why would you talk so loudly during a fucking experimental ambient set. especially when people around you are clearly trying to have a meditative listening experience. I ate a little mushrooms as well so my senses were hyper aware. fortunately I was there for all of the Black Dice, Avey, and 75% of Geo's set and all three were pretty astounding.

yeah i agree w/ mbillz
literally up until drip city people were being hyper respectful and quiet
i actually got kind of overwhelmed w/ emotion during akron family's set (which was a complete shock to me as i've never been really into them)
frumpkin is right too
heard a fuckton of people talk about BDG like he was Josh
so many people thought this actually, it was really annoying to have to listen to and also see a mob of people standing watching him DJ instead of sitting or lying down because they wanted front row for Deaks
but yeah, by the time geo was on it was pretty fucking loud in terms of voice chatter in the space
which sucked because geo was pretty quiet dropping all that rumble & squelch

I was telling Float On Sputnik last week that I was kinda bummed AC is blowing up the spot for Tonalism. It's supposed to be a metaphysical and meditative experience, not a party.

Bummed I couldn't make it, but also bummed that people got loud and rowdy :^/

@curved
really sucks because people just had preconcieved notions about what to expect from AC dudes and were not prepared for the sets they had prepared... AC dudes came correct for the night, just a lot of people did not

don't get me wrong y'all
wasn't like the event was ruined or anything
people were just loud during avey, geo, & some of brian
before them, it was quiet as a church in there
after them, not as quiet as a church but definitely quiet enough that i napped during the girl from xiu xiu's set

Being from Seattle, I've always had an intrinsic bias against LA but after an event like Tonalism I really can't hate on the place. Miles Cooper-Seaton and Heather McIntosh put on a very moving and special performance, by far the most unique of the night. Brian DeGraw is a fucking wizard, a master of transitions. geologist rode the same wave the entire duration of his set which was pretty impressive. The first 20 minutes of Avey's set truly felt like a dream/nightmare- he used some kind of effect on these recorded sample of voices that was eerily similar to the way voices sound in dreams. There were visual artists creating live illustrations which were being projected on the floor and lots of trippy animations on the four walls. We were on the periphery near the artists and speakers which helped reduce the chatter, we made a nest of blankets and pillows and enjoyed the sights and sounds from the comfort of our cuddle puddle. Such a wonderful experience.
