i don't get the safer hype either (avey overindulgence is definitely right) either but it is notable for being deakin's first recorded vocal work

well, for two minutes the song sits on a harp loop while avey just says stuff. there's no progression until "I'm alright if you're alright" and the focus is all on him
(I know he's not just "saying stuff" but I don't really know how to say what I mean other than like that that. sounds very negative sorry)

He sings it like a beat poem, and if beat poetry isn't self indulgent then I don't know what is

what? Deakin doesn't sing on this song. If you referring to the Malta fest video, he's pitched down his vox and is making weird noises. Not really vocal work. If you include that kind of "singing", then his debut was in the early 2000's.

to me, the first half of safer is about creating a very specific vibe and sound. Kind of how the piano loop is kind of wandering, slowing down and speeding up, avey perfectly echos that sound and the space it creates is pretty magical. The lyrics are also very visual. I can see the environment he's created. It's very dark blue and crowded. Love that dish.

safer is amazing. the "self indulgent beat poem" at the beginning is one of my fav things AC has done. The crazy noisey samples that geo messes with during the harp/piano sample plus aveys delirious lyrics building to the IM ALRIGHT part is NUTS.

The main vocal sample in the second half is from a really awesome song.

for those who havent heard

i dont think deak sings on this track at all in the studio version unless he is the one singing at the very end when everything is fading out.

Do you have a source? It's not that I don't believe you it's just that it usually seems pretty hard to figure out who played what on AC records. Especially on anything with all 4 members

deak's got really noticeable voice bits all over feels though
also have we ever confirmed/reached a consensus on whether or not the "hey heyyyyyy ah huhhhhh" bit at the end is the direct bollywood sample or one of the guys covering it?
the fact that they already used a cover of a sample they found on safer (the opening piano sample is just dave covering a harp sample they found on piano) and the fact that the vocal line sounds like deakin/has slight differences from the source sample makes me think that might just be deakin/pitch shifted dave

I always just assumed that was the bollywood sample since it sounds pretty much exactly like the original to my ear

I also always assumed that the other voice towards the end of Safer (the one that almost kinda singing in a yodeling style) was also a sample, it just sounds like a sample to me. idk

yeah, i am no expert. certainly no authority. but if we're thinking of the same part, i can't imagine that is not dave. sounds so much like him, plus he is singing in concert with it. not that that rules out the possibility of it being a sample. but it sounds like the same thing. though, we also though jabba and og faces were one song.. so, who knows..
