I'm just curious to see if you all believe animal collective will ever create an album that surpasses MPP in musical genious? Also, where do you believe Animal Collective will go next with their music? Personally I believe that they will begin to use more samples and possibly even start doing 3 or 4 part harmonies using deaken and geologist. Thoughts and opinions?

Nah they're never gonna match it. They should probably just quit making music.

i dont think mpp is their best record but i think it'll will stay their biggest success critically and commercially.. i think next record will be sample based and more accessible... i think the mixed reaction to chz and pandas new sound will influence a bit of a return to that mpp sound...

What would you say your favorite album is popadam? Personally for me it's a close tie between sung tongs and mpp

I signed in from my phone (which is a chore, mind you) just to say
1. mpp isn't their "best album"
2. does it matter
3. each album is so different that it seems silly to say stuff like "man, don't think they could ever beat that!" or "i hope they change their sound!"

I mean not to say that MPP is their best album, I just find it has reached the most critical and commercial success. So I guess to rephrase this, do you believe animal collective will ever release another album to that much critical acclaim and success. Also, purely through opinion of course, I feel that on MPP every song is amazing and could be a personal favorite, while on other albums by AC, the bulk is good but some songs tend to be weaker.
Tldr; There best album is based on opinion. MPP reached their highest critical/commercial fame

I don't think they'll ever match MPP's critical and commercial success. It's not a simple question of: can the band ever produce something like that again? Because critical and commercial success involve many other factors. Popular music (meaning music with a wide appeal, not just pop music but all genres: rock, pop, funk, hip hop, etc) is a constantly changing landscape, and what may be considered cool or hip at any given point is subject to change at a moment's notice.
When Merriweather came out, it just so happened that the musical climate into which it was born was extremely receptive to its (arguably) quite idiosyncratic style, leading to universal hype. I really don't think AC try very hard or at all to adapt to the current music scene, so if you think about it, this is a huge coincidence and sort of crazy. Same goes for Person Pitch. And for that reason I'd say it's very unlikely that AC will ever release something as popular or critically acclaimed as either of those albums.

Next album won't be sample based. I do see them trying out harmonies again though.

MPP feels like such an amalgamation of AC, and perhaps the last decade of boundary pushing music. I think if they're to create an album of such intensity again they'll have to make something that speaks of the future before the future speaks itself.

I agree with the critical and commercial success part, but as others ahve said, there are no "best" AC albums.
In my opinion the only thing that is a concrete opinion is which AC album is YOUR favorite one. With a band that has so many albums all of differing musical offerings it's hard to say there is a concrete #1. My fav is CHz as of now but I know i'll change my mind in a month.

I don't know why, but I'm expecting the next album to sound like a cross between mpp and down there, with heavier beats
I am so sure of this it will now be with every post I ever make

I think that commercial and critical success was the result of perfect timing. They were one of the first modern acts to use samples live in a way that makes their electronic music sound human again. I think this resonated so well with the public as a sort of backlash against the digital age with everything being so connected, so on time, so rhythmic, every day in and out. You have your very specific schedule which is in a sense digitized; able to be represented by 0's and 1's. So songs like "Taste" with the dragged out beat that pushed you to the edge of your seat and doesn't fall where you expect it, wakes something up in you.
There's a lot more to MPP than some killer tunes.

Absolutely agreed. Also think about the fact that Merriweather tones down many of AC's less palatable qualities: 7-minute+ song lengths, harsh bursts of noise, and Avey screams (minus Brosport, but they're at least a little harder to hear in the studio version). It's not just the use of samplers that foreshadowed future trends either. Merriweather's use of ambient space, repetitive song structure and dreamy/spacey sound fit quite nicely into the chillwave paradigm, regardless of whether or not the band were trying to—and of course I don't think they were.
But yeah, I'd definitely agree that there's more to the album than just great songs.

It's a pop masterpiece and one of the top three greatest albums I've ever heard. Not a weak track on it, I've listened daily for years now and it seriously doesn't get old.
Does that mean I want them to go back to that sound again.? Hell no. Will they ever reach that level of commercial success again? I don't know, I'm not a fortune teller. But damn, what I would give to make an album so perfect.

Hah 4 part harmonies. That's hilarious.
I do believe that CHz is better than MPP but it's not a competition. There isn't just one sweet one they must reach for, then they're done.... They can all be amazing. That said, I do feel that MPP is probably the most well conceived in terms of consistency and unity.

Will AC ever make MPP again? Like just attempt to re-record it in the exact same way? And then re-release it on vinyl too? And then tour it again touring the exact same dates and venues?

They should do exactly this but add exactly 1 more "woo!" on Brothersport and see if anyone notices

To just agree with most of you.....MMP is not their best album, nor should any of their albums be given such tittle! Im happy you have one album you really like, but its you opinion ...not a fact. Mine is 'Feels" but thats irrelevant.

Idk, I hope so. I agree with a lot of peeps here, and don't really define any album as "best," though I do have faves and least faves. I hope they reach that height of critical/commercial success again, it would just be cool to see my animals succeeding like mufuckas and in the limelight again. I think they could do it.
I sometimes wonder what the dynamic is like these days within the band. (though I know it's not really any of my business haha.) I want them to sync up and spend a lot of time together and just feel good enjoying each other's company. Anyway, who knows. I loved the acoustic versions of the CHZ songs, and also love the fuck out of New Psycho Actives. I'd be stoked if they took their next 'bum in either of those directions, though i'll probably like whatever they do haha.
Peace out, fellow animals!

A lot of people (not me) thought Sufjan Stevens was "done" after The Age Of Adz, but now Carrie & Lowell looks like it could end up becoming his most successful record yet. So idk, maybe a similar thing could happen to AC.
