Well, probably because he considers his solo act a hobby than a career. I think his 2012 apology was the death knell for his solo career. I think his routine emails to his kickstarter supporters is pro forma professional politeness. He may release music but who knows really. He has shown himself to be completely unprofessional in terms of his solo career. I think he knows that it probably won't work. He's not a great singer or songwriter and might prefer to live without a Pitchfork shaming.

What? How would you know this?
Miss Amanda Jones wrote:

I really doubt it.

All feels pretty genuine to me. Would it be better for him to just not provide any updates at all?
Miss Amanda Jones wrote:

I would be really surprised if he ended up never releasing anything.
Miss Amanda Jones wrote:

I can see this argument but it seems he's legitimately apologetic about the wait and has provided a decent amount of updates on the situation.
Miss Amanda Jones wrote:

Another completely baseless assumption.
Miss Amanda Jones wrote:

So you think he's hesitant about releasing something out of fear that a shitty music publication won't like it?

Congratulations, every sentence is complete horseshit.

Ha! Sorry.

I am only being super critical because it's been five years since he announced these projects. Some artists, like Jimi Hendrix for example, made several albums and established a lasting legacy in less time than that. I'm sorry to piss you all off, but I'm not criticizing you, I just think it's funny to have faith that Deakin is definitely going to do solo music and release these projects after a half a decade what appears to be severe procrastination. I think I'm being rather common sense about this whole thing...

i actually 100% DO think he's a great singer and songwriter based on his boots and stuff like Country Report. (Wide Eyed wasn't my favorite thing he's done)
Definitely has something he needs to get out into the world and something that the world needs

I like a large part of Deaks 2010 shows was simply him getting back in the game after sitting out MPP. Yeah he had been working on Oddsac and stuff but he hadn't performed live in years. I really think it was more about preparing to rejoin the band than anything else. Maybe he did intend to record and release those songs but for whatever reason he's never been able to finish recordings he's happy with. From everything we've heard it sounds like he has multiple versions of the album done but it just never came together right. I really really hope he releases that dvd at some point though.

Country Report is a good track, but the singing is pretty stentorian. My favorite Deakin vocal is the acoustic version of Wide Eyed (a song I'm not too fond of). He sings it nicely.

uh it's loud or powerful? idg your point. not sure you're saying what you're meaning.
do you mean it's clumsy or more of a yell than a song? cause i would disagree with you if so.
even if a song was yelled that wouldn't in itself be a knock against it either, so i'm not sure of your point

I love deak's vocal style...
Wide eyed was always one of my favourites from CHz, country report is fantastic. His boots are a bit abstract but the structure's there and I don't think he'd have much trouble nailing the vocal delivery in the studio.
I don't think the argument here is whether he's talented or not...

I've given the guy some stick for this in the past but I think I'm less expectant these days. None of us has any idea really about the guy's motivations or anxieties. I get the impression that he's built this up far far too much in his own mind, but understandably so, as well. Wide Eyed is not one of his stronger songs and it was pretty widely criticised, if not derided. I know there are fans of the song on here - and I'm very fond of the acoustic version - but it's not even particularly representative of his music, based off the boots.

For all I know, the guy is absolutely crippled by self-doubt and fear of failure, as well as embarrassment at having bitten off more than he could chew. I only wish I could retract some of my criticisms and hope he never read them. I like the idea of solo recording and performance being something of a stepping stone to performing with the band again. If he releases more solo material, great, I'd like to hear it. If he incorporates some of his very best writing into AC songs, I'd probably like to hear them more. If he doesn't release anything, as long as he's happy with that, I'd be happy for him.

I mean, it could very well be true. Critics are harsh, so it can often be nerve-wracking for a musician to release music out of fear that people will hate it. Combine that with the fact that Deakin may very well feel he's in Avey & Panda's shadow, and I don't think it's unreasonable to imagine that he's extremely doubtful of himself. I probably would be, if I were in his situation.

I do believe that within the band they're very supportive of each other, since Avey has said in interviews that he was very supportive of PB when he started writing more songs for the band. Like it never felt like a competition. Regardless, though, it still must feel intimidating for Deakin because if and when he releases an album, he'll inevitably be compared to Avey & Panda—two pretty prolific songwriters.

I don't understand where exactly your question is directed.

To clarify my point of view, I'm saying 'we've no idea about his reasons for not releasing anything, aside from that he's apparently scrapped a number of recordings and expressed both dissatisfaction at what he has recorded, and made reference to his own perfectionism'. Although it's only speculation and to be treated as nothing more than that, what we do know logically adds up to a guy struggling for confidence in his solo material. If so, putting the boot into him would be pretty insensitive and selfish.

As for retracting my criticisms, I certainly don't expect him to have either a) read them or b) lose sleep over my perspective on what he should be doing with his music but they serve no purpose, just a whinge into the ether which can either do harm or nothing. Hence, I'd take them back.

Yes, he said he hadn't really had the chance to work on it because of some personal issues (which I did not press). This was at the most recent LA set, whenever that was?

yeah I also went and I got some info.

The whole "DJ tour" thing is so they can finance a tour and album? Something about financing. This year is in fact the year when AC plays new shows, avey said in the fall they'll most likely be touring. Talked to deakin about his album and he said it should be done by June and out by the end of the year. The couple of AC songs they played, Daily Routine and a dubbed out Queen in my Pictures, are actually exclusive deakin remixes for these shows, apparently deak loves to remix old songs of theirs? Geologist is also super skinny now.

Good news after him saying he'd put it on hold last year but it's interesting since you'd think he'd be in full AC mode at this point after they'd taken a year off?
