AnCo live in general, from a noob's perspective

I've seen a fair amount of live music in my day, and still try to see shows as often as a I can.
However, I've never really seen any acts that weren't just straight up rock/pop/hip hop type stuff. How far from the typical 'live show' mold that these bands adhere to does AnCo stray from? In terms of visuals, improvs, breaks between songs, etc...I've been meaning to seem them live for a long time, but they never seem to come to my city.

Songs often sound different from the studio versions, sometimes very different. Typically Animal Collective also use transitions between songs, so there's really no breaks between songs.

what's so great about catching AC on tour is that they change quite dramatically from each era. for example, this means that the live experience is pretty different from 2013 (post CHz) to (pre MPP) 2008 or even more dramatically from 2001 to 2013. where most bands you get a decent grasp on what past and future concerts are like based on seeing them once, it's always uncertain what animal collective will be like the next time they come to town or even who will be in the band
which brings me to the fact the lineup has a huge impact on the concert. for the most part AC has always been at the bare minimum avey tare and panda bear, with the exceptions of a couple of shows (tokyo 2004 and glasslands 2008 comes to mind). they are what really make the concerts memorable for me with their reliance on harmonies and melodies. next comes geologist, who is more frequently a mainstay than deakin, but both definitely have a lot to offer and for the most part you can expect them to be on tour
from era to era, the styles, instruments and members have changed, but there are a couple patterns that remain throughout their live practices. one is that you should normally expect the setlist to change from night to night. but the set lists don't differ as much as a jam band's since they will normally stick to the same 15-20ish from tour to tour. prior to 2009, at least 3/4 of the songs would be for an upcoming release, with the others being slightly or dramatically reworked from past records. the guys do this because they like to work things out on live first before they go into the studio to record. this changed after the release and success of MPP and has continued with CHz, where now instead of only spending a year gestation period for new songs, they will also play the same songs after the release and continue to evolve them
also in regards to improvisation, the band has stated that about 10% of the show is improvised. like victor said this usually comes in the form of 'vocal jams' or transitions in-between songs, which will normally start with a tease of the next song at the end of another. the shows are normally grouped by 3 to 4 sections of songs with transitions in between. usually the only times the band takes a break is to say hello and to thank the crowd. so don't expect much verbal interaction with the crowd, however they are extremely good at controlling the energy of a venue because they themselves get so entranced by preforming, especially avey
the band has said that they don't think they are very interesting to watch live (which i completely disagree with) and that they want the music to be the main focus. this is where the visual element to their shows come in. at the beginning of their career they wore masks, but soon abandoned that before it got too cliche. now it seems like they have moved onto lighting and stage production. collaborators such as danny perez, black dice and dave's sister abby, have added stage props and projected visuals to their shows; again this changes from tour to tour and have become quite elaborate. i preferred the more stripped down LED stands they used for the pre-merriweather shows. one thing to note about the visuals are that the are just as psychedelic and as rhythmic as the music
tl;dr - although i would suggest going into your first show with nothing to base it on beforehand, if you really want a feel for past live shows check out these videos

Forgot to respond to this. Yeah, I am really from ATL but I just moved here a couple months ago so I couldn't tell you why they don't come here often. Sorry.
I'm hoping next time they tour, they at least play Nashville or one of the Carolinas. It'd be worth the trip.

They don't seem to come to FL often, so next time they do tour I hope they do a few shows in the southeast. Would definitely be worth the 7-10hr road trip.
P.S. Really sad I missed their DJ set in Miami back in August due to work.

I saw them in Seattle for the Strawberry jam release / MPP early days
Had tickets to see them in New York for CHZ era but the show was cornpilled and I couldn't get the time in for the makeup show.
See them live if you can, there's nothing like it. Just listening to the boots you can tell there's some magic there. They show up to these fuckin things. Dig it
