yall are whack, the production is perfect. its about time pandy's vocals were front n center, his voice and melodies are too good to be buried in reverb or under the samples. somebody mentioned it in the other thread but this is the most 'live' sounding studio recording to date and its sooo exciting to listen to.

gives it such a super specific vibe...the warmth of the bass synth and the twinkly sentiment of the high synth combine to make the song feel like it's in some kinda spacey parapet in a fairy tale

mirror mirror on the wall whos the realest guy of them all

I dunno. I think that us as fans can offer constructive criticism that is specific in detail and not just brash attacks like "THIS EP SUCKS!". Being honest about what he don't like about a record can help us cherish what we actually do like about a record and helps to provoke healthy discussion that isn't just one-dimensional fawning.

Besides, few of us here are actually singling out Boom because we know that the recording process is largely a team-effort.

I am one of the folks who was kinda disapointed by Tomboy, and for me this EP is pure magic. Best AC-related release since MPP.

What I especially like about it: Clear vocals, feelings of playfulness, awsome bass, awesome beats.

I want to live in Faces in the Crowd.

Congrats Noah and Petek.

I think this side of paradise is one of my favorite pb tracks now. The swing drums, dat more than 2 sections structure, those reverse vocals, again his word play on the track is great with all the assonance and imagery continuity, sounds like circuit bending at the beginning, and some rad transitions! animal collective's mixing has always been purposely crowded, especially post-mpp. now that being said, the only time it has bothered me was on a few songs on slasher flicks and chz. what i havent liked lately is the vocal effects. panda's vocal almost sounds of low quality on these songs (except faces in the crowd maybe). i also have felt this way about avey's vocal lately. think about how clear and great the vocals sounded on strawberry jam. i still have enjoyed all the recent releases a lot, but i hope they change this on the next album.

I don't really see it this is the one release where i feel pandas vocals are the clearest and most upfront and the effects he does use are usually way mellower or add to the song more than previous material.

Yeah, I gotta say this is the first time his vocals sound like he does live (which I like), but to each his/her own

after spending a couple days with the EP, my favorite things are:

1) multilayer vocal tracking towards the end of 'Mr Noah'
2) the sample opening the beginning of 'Untying the Knot'
3) the mixes on 'Mr Noah' and 'Untying the Knot'
4) 2:15 during 'Faces in the Crowd,' background Noah vocals "LLOOoooook into the MIRRRRAAAAA"
5) the end of 'This Side of Paradise.' Oh my God. So beautiful.

Observations/me being a hater:

1) 'This Side of Paradise' reminds me a lot of the more eccentric songs on the "Smile Sessions" yeah yeah yeah it's so played comparing Noah to Brian but i don't care -- both the lyrics and Noah's melodies. Definitely not the beat though
2) not a huge fan of the mixes on both 'Faces in the Crowd' and 'This Side of Paradise,' unfortunately. 'Faces' is an extremely emotionally charged song and I wish the mix mirrored (no pun intended) that and was more bareboned... a little less muddled and compressed.
3) loooove the woodwind sample on 'Paradise.' but I wish the levels on it were louder and the moog was turned down slightly or removed altogether.

all in all, LOVE IT

Yeah! There are def some subtle and cool structural details in that song. I also like how in the "to my guy/til I die" section, he alternates between those two phrases, but says it an odd amount of times each bar (don't know if that's the right word/not a theory guy). So throughout the whole section it starts with to my guy and ends with til I die. Same with the "go ask why/no reply" section.

Close, he sings one line per bar but the chord changes take up 7 bars. The progression is repeated twice, and the first one starts and ends with "to my guy," then the second one starts and ends with "'til I die."

And there's a really subtle addition in the go ask why/no reply section -- synth pad? more reverb? Can't pick out what it is exactly, but you can feel the song open up there. Bringing us back to where we began, but with a new perspective.

Ah yeah, thanks for clarifying that. And as for the go as why section, I think I hear an extra shaker sample come in at that part, tho there might be more.

Yea, I believe I can hear this as well. A shaker or a percussion loop of some kind definitely kicks in at the chorus. There might be more, like you said, my ears can't quite tell.

Loving this EP for driving to and from class

Untying the knot is a grower, mr noah is a banger, faces in the crowd is overwhelming to the senses, and this side of paradise makes a great last track.
Spoiler: show
I completely agree with dropping it to the EP and ending with it. I obviously don't know if the production on the album is close to that of the EP, but if so, I can't really imagine TSOP fitting anywhere but at the end and I feel like nadir and (from what yall say) acid wash do a much better job. Not sure why I spoilered this but oh well lol

things I love about this ep
1) that sparkly synth in this side of paradise
2) every time another layered vocal enters in untying the knot
3) that aggressive synth in mr. noah
4) dogs in mr noah
5) underlying sample in this side of paradise
6) that dreamy ending of the ep
7) when faces in the crowd kicks in
8) the way pb sings "it's you" the first time in faces in the crowd
9) every time "now" and "down" just about overlap in untying the knot

hell yeah on all those. i love how the sparkle synth and the spooky sample steal every transition on TSoP. what a great thing this is

on TSoP the almost electric sounding buzz between verses reminds me so much of the intro to this classic genesis game; right when the x-men logo bursts onto the screen. I wonder if noah pitched it down?
