after reading some of these comments i agree that i wouldn't be surprised if grim reaper has a lot of influence on this album. if thats the case, i could totally see them going for a more groovy dance vibe (like brothersport as someone mentioned). also hoping the vocals aren't completely dominated by avey like on chz. i would like to see more panda tracks. a nice 50/50 split of avey/panda songs would be great, ideally a bunch of tracks with both of them doing awesome harmonies.

It's an album, the music for which they recorded in the studio. The fact that it's a visual album doesn't change that.

What's wrong with Deaks vocals? I think they're lovely personally. I would love to hear more of him in the front even in the harmony parts actually. More harmonies in general too.

I don't care where they go next time. I hope it's darker though, it'd be cool to see Avey continue that route. And I remember when I saw Avey at Nuemos the other week for Slasher they were doing some cool kind of free jazz in between songs. I'd like to hear more of that!

cool I had never seen that before. Just to play devils advocate here, avey is saying he wants the album to be reviewed and looked at by the press like a normal album(the difference being that it has a visual component), but not that it is necessarily their tenth album proper. You're right that it is recorded in a studio though, and therefore is a studio album, but again devil's advocate here, you could argue that it is basically a movie with a soundtrack, and is therefore categorized differently than their other studio albums.

But if I'm not playin devils advocate then yeah I s'pose it is their 10th album.

sorry that was Deakin there

yeah you're right he didn't specifically say "it's our tenth studio album" but I think the fact that people weren't treating it like a "proper album" was what was annoying him

also I think it's not quite a movie-with-a-soundtrack (where the sountrack part is typically just an accompaniment to the actual move) just like it's not quite an album-with-a-music-video (since music videos tend to be just an accompaniment to the actual music), since both the music and the visual parts were worked on in the same period and influenced each other so much

yeah it is definitely a "visual album" over being a "movie + soundtrack". I think because it is a visual album, and not just an album, people still want to make a distinction for whatever reason. Sucks that the overall hype of oddsac was hurt by the need to distinguish between the two.

My vote:

Electronic Campfire Song-ish. A return to earth through the light. AC's Young Prayer. No drums. An understated release - they've done the glam rock star thing. Acoustic and electronic soundscapes reverberating through real physical aural environments.

I personally hope the album will be something noone had ever expected

And second i think avey says in the reddit ama that he counts oddsac and hollinn as studio albums.(hes describing all of their albums with one word) and in there i remember it as he also mentions hollinn and oddsac.

My one main hope is that the songs are all given some room to breathe...CHz and ETSH both sounded a bit stuffy and maybe overly in-your-face to me.

I loved their acoustic takes Wide Eyed and Pulleys and always thought it'd be nice to have an era with that style (loved panda using a tabla for percussion too) though I guess they have done the acoustic thing a number of times before so it's probably unreasonable to expect that again.

Idk about Deakin being a lock. If he enters a second AC album cycle without finishing his Mali stuff I'll be a bit bummed.

I think there is a slight chance that Deakin's album will be released around the same time and there could be part of an Animal collective tour with a Deakin set before Animal Collective!

this new album will be quite special ... just in thinking about it, everyones' creative palettes/lexicons keep expanding. they all have something to say with music, lyrics, concepts, the realms in between each of those that are so well navigated and appreciated by everyone involved, and they are have more ways to express these processes each new time around!

^Not sure about that, but for what it's worth, I remember reading somewhere that Geologist was surprised at how gentle and whisper-y the vocals were on Feels. So at times, even the band themselves are surprised at how they sound.

Or the story about how Avey and Panda listened back to the initial recording of WCWAR and couldn't believe they sounded like that

After MPP, it was generally assumed that they would be aiming for a more instrumental approach, especially in light of Deakin joining back up with the group. After word came that Noah was taking up the drums again for the CHz sessions, it was more-or-less set in stone that their next record would assume a sort of rock-band guise.

But IMO, it's a little too early now to figure out what another AC record would sound like. They did say that the band could go acoustic soon (à la KEXP, Seattle bootleg from last year) but the stuff we've heard from Slasher Flicks, Panda Bear and Deakin has been anything but acoustic. Time will tell!

I think an album that is more electronically/not instrument driven is likely. I could see a lot of vocal harmonies being included with less instruments. But still really layered and sample-based.

Whatever they go for, I hope that they make something out of the melody from this video's first 2 minutes:

The only thing I've read that could be interpreted as negative feelings towards working with Ben Allen was when they said they had to step in and talk with him because they didn't like where he was going with New Town Burnout, or something like that. It was in an interview back when Centipede Hz first came out.

They've just never worked with the same person more than twice in a row. Don't see it happening. Especially after CHz wasn't received as well as they were hoping for. Avey talked a bit about that on the wandering wolf podcast. Not Ben Allen, just how he felt about the way CHz was received.

It's different this time around though since he's on board the whole time, but then again I didn't think much of Congratulations which is the only other album I've heard that he's produced, but on the OTHER hand MGMT didn't grab me either so hmm

No one has a problem with not counting ACB with the rest right?
