hmmm did they ever use sequencers? until the painting with tour? I'm pretty sure they just used samples that they manually triggered, no sequences. I could be wrong, but im genuinely curious if anyone knows better

True, wasn't thinking about solo stuff, was mostly just thinking about the band's setup in the 2000s. I don't think they ever used sequencers on the samplers. was in the flowers originally performed with sequenced samples, or was that central synth part one giant sample that someone triggered at the start of the song? i know nobody was playing that live

just wondering as a gear nerd

"The acoustic guitar on 'In The Flowers' was the original recording that Dave did into his Roland [VS]1680 in New York,” Allen recalls. "We imported it off of his machine. I tried to talk them out of that as much as possible, but sometimes they're really particular about the way things sound. They really like the sounds they've already gotten and getting them away from that could be difficult sometimes, for better or for worse.”

That clears it up then, no sequencers. awesome. i always assumed that just from watching and listening to them. i love that method

I think the primary instrumentation for in the flowers (in the original tour) was all on a single sample that geo or avey triggered at the beginning of the song and just let it play. I dont think avey did anything other than sing, geo triggered the cricket/frog sounds during the drop, and panda triggered all of the percussive and bass samples. thats my judgement based on being way too familiar with videos of that era lol
