Perhaps this deserves its own thread/perhaps there already is one, but I just saw Other Music announced on their facebook page:

We're so proud to announce that Other Music will have its world premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival! Today we're embarking on a second Kickstarter campaign to help launch the film at Tribeca and beyond. You can watch a brand new teaser trailer for the film on the Kickstarter page https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pr ... GRnoP3HjP0

Not the hugest AC-related news ATM but will still be cool to see their parts of this. Given their super-prolific DJ mixing nature I'd be very surprised if they ended up not contributing to that part of the kickstarter. Also Dallou's quote below should get people a little excited. Could be in the wind but gotta have hope.

Someone is doing a documentary about the record store Other Music which will feature live performance from different bands close to the store. Knowing that I sent a message to their facebook page about the AC perormance : do they have it on tape, will it be in the doc, so on.
They responded :

Code: Select all

Hi there. So, we hope we find it but we currently don't have the footage. Other Music had a VHS dub of the video in their collection but someone "borrowed" it and so far we haven't tracked it down. The person who shot it had the master take in a storage locker but so far he hasn't been able to find it. But we're hopeful that it will turn up before we finish the doc.
edit : for those who does not know about the live in question
Spoiler: show

Thanks again Dallou!

E: Ok, it looks like it was found? From the kickstarter description.

I used to go to Other Music in the early 2000s when I was in high school and I wonder now if I ever met or saw Dave or Noah there. I remember thinking everyone who worked there seemed way cooler than me...Wonder if anyone on this board remembers meeting them there...

That place was the birthplace of Jane, and where Noah worked back in the day, right?

My theatre is doing an official "virtual screening" of Other Music on April 17th. It's 10 bucks to rent the film for a 3 day period. The doc is actually pretty rad and there is a lot of cool AC moments from Avey, Panda and Geologist who talk about working at the record shop and the early years of the band. Some awesome live clips too.

"Virtual tickets" for streaming are available here:

Just finished it, good section of AC, (nothing really that we haven't seen, didn't see the other music in-store performance show up in it)

I work closely with my local record store and it hit me hard at moments welling with tears on how important it is to have a place where people passionate about art can come together and bond over it. Hits especially hard as we are in quarantine.

I hope my store never closes. It was where I first bought Sung Tongs in 2004 (had friends drive us into the city from our suburbs to go) Its very possible I wouldn't be typing this right now had it not been for that glorious day when one of the people working turned me onto them.

RIP Other Music, Long live independent Record Stores.

Their kickstarter had a tier where you get a video mixtape.

"A digital download of "Live At Other Music," an album-length video mixtape of live in-store performances at Other Music filmed by Derek Yip between 1996 and 2004. Exclusively available to Kickstarter backers! PLUS the Employee Manual."

I thought it was a great movie! Very interesting, I feel like this place was an easy prototype for all 2000's era record stores to sort of mimic. When I was a kid I went to Good Records in Dallas a lot and it had a very similar vibe to the footage/staff/performances I saw in the doc. Also loved the about 5-7min part about AC in it and laughed hysterically when my girlfriend turned and said "Stephen, are we watching this because of Animal Collective?"

Just watched this. Wow. It made me so sad. It felt like reading Zweig’s The World of Yesterday. Man. It happened so fast.
