Happy bday MPP!
Legendary album and such a special set of songs
I wasn't a fan when it was released so the anniversary doesn't mean too much to me but it is weird to think it's 10 years old. I wanna hear some oldskool CAers recount the hype and the notorious Xmas day freebird

AC just posted this instagram, couple pics from the album's recording sessions and teasing some more MPP related goodies coming soon. Hope we get a cool live recording or something https://www.instagram.com/p/BsTScUIHNvJ/

Happy 10th Birthday MPP. We’re overwhelmed about how many of you have tapped into our world through this music. Every record is special to us but this one seems to have flown the farthest. We hope to release some other MPP related sounds and sights over the next couple months in celebration of this moment. Keep tuning in. It’s 2019. We’re finding our way into some new sounds.

Christmas Day was really amazing that year...

Was home VISITING FRIENDS..

We all snapped on it quick, five of us smashed in the best audio equipped vehicle we had, driving around the snowy country roads, amidst a hazy blizzard..

Bowl after bowl smoked.

I think we listened to it three times. Very loud.

It felt like a dream after the My Girl’s Brosport freebirds.

Bluish was the song y’all. Pardon me y’all boomers but I’m young. BUT WHEN I heard the beginning of Bluish and that synth line I was changed. Didn’t know something as layered as Bluish was possible. Taste was insanity And no More Runnin helped me come to terms wit my sexual preference. I could go on for hours. Ac is a bastion of hope but I think I said that already. Never stop!!!

I've written on here about ten times about the day it freebirded and I was working in China at our language school. I really really really wanted to close for the day but my mate/business partner told me not to be so stupid. Ended up walking home the long long way in crunchy snow, crying with happiness, eating steamed buns and chugging Chinese beers listening to MPP on repeat. I'll never forget that first massive chord change in the second half of Daily Routine with tears in my eyes, seeing the blurry neon signs and brake lights as I made my way home to get showered and head out to celebrate the freebird with my friends. One of the most burning, enduring memories of my whole life and a moment that will stay with me until I die. Lovely to see the band acknowledge this and can't wait to see what they come up with.

I was happy to read the band’s IG post. A year of celebration sounds good to me, especially with new music/mixes/etc, though I have yet to feel regret for deleting the album version of Taste from my library.

For some reason that is completely beyond me I don’t have this interview in the stickied thread

https://www.soundonsound.com/people/ani ... t-pavilion

It’s my favorite interview of the MPP and it’s the most in-depth they go on recording the album that I’ve ever seen.

Haha, something very cool about seeing that notorious daily routine sink. I listen to AC pretty sparsely these days, due to having many periods of listening to them nonstop over the past several years, but I listened to merriweather earlier today and it was great. Really an incredible feat to make music that still holds up considering the probably millions of times I've played the album since it was released. Brothersport is still magic.

I was living in Chicago and having my first Xmas away from home when this puppy freebirded. Greatest gift I could have received. I had already heard the Brosport and my Girls freebirds and even little snippets of Bluish and Also Frightened that had freebirded (these had me the most excited). I was alone in my room just listening over and over...then a few days later I ate my first MDMA pill and blasted the record, dancing on my bed for hours. I was 23. So special.

weirdly my fave songs from this record have have really shifted since it dropped:

old: Summertime Clothes, Bluish

new: Daily Routine, My Girls, Guys Eyes

The Xmas MPP freebird was my first real introduction to AC. A few friends of mine were big fans, I had heard Purple Bottle and Peacebone but wasn't that interested. My mates avoided all freebirds & that was enough to get me to give it a listen when I heard it was out there. I was immediately surprised by how much I loved it, and have been a huge fan ever since. I'd say that album really pivoted my taste in music and I would probably not be listening to much of the music I do today without it.

Haha yeah pretty much. I remember your brother asked me what the lyrics actually were in Summertime clothes because he couldn't make them out from the boots. So I must have gloated to him that I'd heard the album.

It's the sounds from the intro of Daily Routine, they recorded water droplets and then played them back, alternating between synth notes and water drops

It's explained in the interview Fovrodi posted in this thread, awesome interview that provides some insight into the recording process https://www.soundonsound.com/people/ani ... t-pavilion
wrote:
"'Daily Routine' starts with this little arpeggiated synth thing and the sound of a water drop. The guys had this really specific idea about what they wanted to do and so we cut up the [Juno] arpeggiation into individual notes and just put a mic up and recorded Dave making water drops happen in the sink. Then we cut those into individual samples and I went into Logic and wrote a tempo map that just accelerated over the course of 30 to 60 seconds. So the song starts and you hear one little note of the arpeggiation and one little water drop and they slowly speed up until it goes into the song.”

Hooray for a great album and the one that got me into AC!

I still remember first hearing the dense wall of sound on My Girls and being put off/intrigued.

I love the 2007 live boots, when the MPP songs were playful in a sparse kinda way.

Cheers boys!

When I was 12, I went on iTunes to spend a $10 giftcard I got as a gift. I saw MPP being promoted at the top of the iTunes store page, and despite knowing nothing about it, I bought it because of the artwork.

Little did I know....

Feels like so long ago now

In a way, I feel like everyone here is kind of my son. It's in a completely healthy and respectful way. Let's go fishing, drink your first beer, pack of smokes with the old man kinda way. Driving a mustang through, I dunno, Colorado. Rafting? Let's do it, son! Fire up the ol' chainsaw? Don't mind if I do! Wear your safety goggles, though, and pass me another brewski. Your mom is making cherry pie and we're bringing home some salmon. And we're listening to MPP the whole time.

I wasn't around for the hype, but listened to the album around Christmas of 2010. My half brother who I had just met was into Animal Collective, and I think he posted something on Facebook about them. So I decided to download their most popular album, MPP. I wasn't expecting much, but randomly clicked on Summertime Clothes because of the name and was blown away. I proceeded to listen to the whole thing, start to finish. MPP may not be my favorite AC album, and it's been a long time since I've listened to it start to finish, but it definitely changed my perspective of the possibilities of music

I discovered AC shortly after Strawberry Jam came out in 2007, so MPP was the first release cycle I was actually a part of and my hype for the album was huge. as soon as it freebirded I listened, was initially disappointed by some of the songs but liked most of it and kept listening over and over all day at work at my mini-internship the rest of that winter break until I loved every song. having been to the actual Pavilion in Maryland for some shows before I felt a special connection to the music and nostalgia for summer concerts at outdoor venues

MPP's not my favorite of theirs but it's the only one all of my friends loved just as much as I do so it was the defining album for about three years of my college life. it was the soundtrack to so many great parties, smoking sessions, hangouts, and adventures with psychotropic drugs. I'll never forget getting stoned and staring at the iTunes visualizer for My Girls for hours on end or dancing naked to Summertime Clothes while on MDMA. it's just such a beautiful, joyous album that's still worth celebrating. happy 10th!

I remember watching that 07 performance at the midi festival sooooo much, than seeing them live at pitchfork in 08. I knew the material would be huge I couldn't believe how huge it got though.

It's interesting how it's their landmark album for the mass audience and sales. And it'll sadly always be the album people will compare their new stuff too.

It's their biggest success yet there biggest hindrance.

Fingers crossed we finally see the four minute Brosport demo Noah originally sent the other dudes. (Dave teased at its existence on the old boards). Maybe even with the Moodymann sample Noer originally used.

While we’re sharing memories I recall Tap and I kicking ourselves for missing the official AC listening party (he had moved and I was visiting home for Christmas). I was still able to get a link and be there in spirit. My gf at the time and I laid on the floor and listened to it. She teared up at the end of Daily Routine and just said, “That was a good song.”

Ahead of the release, and I’m not proud of this, I convinced other people on the board that I got an early copy of the album by lying to the band about having a terminal illness. Complete with a faked iTunes screenshot.

^^^ this! I don't see myself getting as hyped for anything else. I'm also 30 now vs 20, so that makes a big difference :)

whoever's video of the brosport live where josh's face gets easter egg'd in for a split second was glorious because I probably watched that 150 times leading up to the release. I refrained from the freebird because i wanted the "purity" of listening to the CD (!) as it was intended in full quality when the band had intended it, especially after strawberry jam freebirded super early, so skipping college classes that AM to wait for the record store to open was TOTALLY worth the leadup anticipation.

Here, watch it a few more times. Never gets old, plus, this era with OG bro sport is still the definitive version...

I too am now 30 and my taste in music has radically changed, but MPP (and most things AC-related really.) have remained a constant..

I feel lame trying to put into words how much impact this record, and that 08-09 time period in general, made on my identity as a whole. My first year at uni, the album freebirded the night I had my first serious relationship implode. It was a sonic synchronicity for the growth and optimism and explorative spirit that I felt genuinely inspired by in those years. What a special, special wave that was...
Blessed band, Blessed album, Blessed community.
No doubt it will inspire generations of sonic seekers to come.
