how do people usually record shows? is there a relatively cheap way that sounds better than just a phone recording? i'll try to at least get a phone recording

Field recorders are usually what we use. Most have on board mic's that do a decent reproduction of the sound coming at us, some use external mic's that they put into the field recorder to help with sound. Ideally you would be able to get a nice x/y mic setup and the sound guy/gal would let you patch into his board so you could get a soundboard recording+audience then you could mix the tracks.
Also usually the best sound in the house is right where the soundboard is so that's the best place to stand. Try to eliminate the possibility of the recorder being bumped and stay away from people who like to talk/sing during the show because it will be upfront and annoying later. I've had to tell people around me not to ask me questions while im recording because I always hear it afterwards and its like nails on a chalkboard.
This is what I use:

I love this recorder mostly because once you EQ the high and mid frequencies the recording really shines. Also it has a wonderful feature where it will save two versions of your recording. One where you set the gain yourself and then a backup file where the gain is at 0 so that if you clip in your gain recording you can salvage the recording and eliminate the possibility of clipping/distortion.
One of these would probably make a phone recording sound a lot better:

EQing the audio file after the show helps a lot, even with a phone recording.

I will MOST LIKELY (not a 100%) be recording the show. I can borrow my friend’s mic and hook it up to my phone.
sweeeet good luck!
wondering if he might do solo versions of his songs from the music box set, that would be neat

Recorded the set on my phone. I think it sounds pretty decent. I’ll upload it when I get home. Being that it’s a live set I can just throw the link up here right? Talked to Josh, he said he’s not booking tours right now but just playing one off shows here and there to try to flesh out new stuff. Also asked him about the New Orleans and Coral sets and he says they haven’t yet talked about putting any of it out but that they like both sets and it may happen. Geo was also there and I told him how much I appreciated his radio show and asked him if he ever planned on putting out an album to which he told me that he is... next week. It’s a live album on cassette and it’ll be at the Panda Bear merch tables. So there ya go. Also said that he doesn’t think he has the patience to mak a full solo studio album. Felt bad for asking him questions because he had larangitis and could barely talk but I’m glad I did.
Oh shit thanks for all those tidbits and thanks for recording! looking forward to hearing down down down and the new track. had a feeling he'd play something from the music village box shows

Hey guys! I’m sorry I could not record the show... My mic got broken and my phone is iffy with quality. Anyways I cut up the songs and added my covers and a disclaimer for the show. Here it is: https://mega.nz/#!fBF2GBTR!d8RfHUbTyWdO ... km1jQRjlt4 . Thank you to the person that recorded the show.

thanks for cutting it up! yeah "something" is what i was thinking too. i'm curious if anyone asked him afterwards if he has a name for the song. i don't think he had a written setlist
also curious if avey pear's recording is better
there were only like 50 people at the show so he should still have some in nyc. but he did run out of the harpy cassette, not sure if that was his full supply

Deakin was great. He sat in a chair and played electric the whole time. There was a drum set on stage so I thought someone might come out to jam Footy but that didn't happen. It wouldn't have really fit with the chill vibe of the rest of the set anyway.
The opener was odd. Picture 15 minutes of the screech from Untitled (on Spirit) plus sparse random drums (like the beginning of Alvin Row but less) and indiscernible yelling. Also some performance art sort of moments like tapping and scratching a drum with the mic inside. Found this video of them doing similar performance stuff [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEEXAfqcCXU]
I left after Deakin so I don't know about Dead Rider's set

seems like such a short set but thats cool. very sweet to see Down Down Down appear again after Music Box set, that was one of my faves... its like the MB set had a sampler of Deak and Geo solo stuff played with a full band, which is sick... i like when theyre fluid about whether a song is solo or full band material. we'll see if stuff like Magicians/Prester John/Tri Kid/Defeat are avey songs, full band songs or JUST music box songs...
stoked for more recordings/videos of these shows

it was a good show, i wish he played more but i was glad he played what he did, I've been really connecting with golden chords lately so i was really happy to hear that. thought the opener with Greg saunier was pretty funny. didn't stick around for dead Rider either, because they seemed lame from what i listened to of them.

Shit, didn't see that you guys already went through the trouble of cutting up the other recording but I just did the same for mine. Also recorded on my phone but I feel like it's louder so I'll post it anyway.
