its my favorite live album of all time. it's a perfect screenshot of a band brimming with fresh unadulterated creativity in an early stage of their career.
Pumpkin gets a snakebite and Forest gospel are unreal. Pumpkin sounds like avey holding onto a mad caged rabbit brimming with flashing lights, imploding on itself twice during the track. The last two "hurrah's" in Forest Gospel sound like the boys are falling down the stairs fighting each other in a cloud of dust, almost cartoonish. the beginning is like a band of forest children marching through the woods. they are so full of life and so easy to visualize which is crazy to me. maybe it was the L.... lol
anyway what do you people think?

Hollinndagain's one of the best things they've made, I feel a deep spiritual connection to it
I feel like it's secretly the core of AC's music

The best version of Lablakely Dress. The vocal effect is so wearing, it breaks down your defences and your soul. It's been known to leave me rampaging through a city eviscerating folk.

i know!! it's crazy that it's not talked about more. comparing it to the crack box recording is even crazier. it's the song that made me realize what makes them so great

my girlfriend got into AC because of me. I never would have expected her to, but she really latched on to their early stuff, pre-2004. Danse and Hollinndagain are among her favorite albums now. We tend to listen to music in bed together before going to sleep, and lately she keeps asking if we can listen to one of those albums, or specific parts of crack box. The pumpkin trilogy is her favorite

It's archetypal AC to me. Nearly every aspect that AC explored in later albums can be found in some primitive form on this and/or Danse. The whole DIY/no instrumental proficiency required/simple effect and instrument setups thing got established here.

don't disagree with the first two sentences but the last bit is a weird interpretation of the band i think

Yeah, i'd say they're all pretty damn proficient at their instruments

Agree that they're proficient at their instruments but I can for sure see what onn is saying. Pride and Fight is just like relentlessly hammering one chord, Ahh Good Country is similar too. Not denying they're talented but they definitely utilize a certain style of minimalism/drone that sorta sounds like someone playing an instrument for the first time ever. It's one reason why their music is often described as childlike
That's not the only approach they use by any means but I think it's a big part of their music and it was established on Danse/Hollinndagain

I have an OG Hollin vinyl ; )
ok so I wrote this about it years ago:
"Animal Collective - Hollinndagain
Calming, unbiased and neutral static. Only its not. Its actually a relaxing thunderstorm -- outside the aural bubble you find yourself safely enclosed within. With Hollinndagain as your guide, the horrors and insecurities of the world are no longer a serious threat. You sit -- finally able to genuinely meditate and relax. The soundtrack echoes your contemplation and elevated mentality. Suddenly, without cause or warning your level of inner peace is taken to such a transcendent level that you find yourself projecting your very spirit outwards into a world even more bizarre than your previous plastic bubble of tranquility. That's all it was though -- simply plastic. That's how profound this newfound world is -- a world that makes the highest state of physical reality look superficial. A pink and purple mist fills the skies as you enter -- upside-down trees and massive, mile-long floating boulders suspended in an airy atmospheric haze. It's then when you realize -- "I can move forward".
The percussion comes in and replaces what was once a soothing ambience with the most intense rush of music you've ever known -- as your very being takes off into the sky. You are soaring. In the background of your mind, you feel more secure than you've ever imagined, despite your ascension into an ever expanding realm of the unknown. Bliss fills your spirit and you become conscious of this. Now it is time to relax. You take on a full-lotus position in very center of the skyline and mentally transform the velvety world around you into a forest.
Such peace. There are clouds in the distance though. It turns out that thunderstorm you heard outside of your initial plastic bubble seems to be approaching even at this level of ascension. Closer and closer it comes until finally -- CRASH. Lightning strikes the tallest oak tree in your mind and a fiery fear flows through your veins.
"Am I dying?"
Its the question most apparent in your thoughts. Sure, the previous experience was beautiful -- but what if that was your final heaven before non-existence? The noise and irrationality of this question repeats and repeats and repeats!
"I want out!"
Metaphysical water rushes down your trachea -- bringing your initial doubts to the forefront of your attention. This is death. The universe, however, is sympathetic. A sad, solumn yet tribal choir sings a requiem for your once-beautiful mindset. If only you could get back to that wonderfully pink mist...if only you could have just been content with your plastic bubble. You'd take superficiality at this point, so long as it meant safety.
Something within you snaps out of it. You realize you've been in the woods the entire time -- lying next to a long extinguished campfire. The sun, shining painfully bright through the branches of trees creates shimmering triangles and hexagons as you begin to find it difficult to breath. Just before blindness, a sharp pain begins to throb on your arm. You glance down and see a snakebite.

Saying "no proficiency" is definitely a huge exaggeration, sorry. But I think there is a punk-like rejection of virtuosity.

Love this album, but there’s something off about the ending.
I think Tell It to the Mountain disrupts the flow of the ending. Ico Ivo would’ve fit nicely between Tell It to the Mountain and Snakebite or even as a replacement to TIttM. Is there any fan who legitimately thinks Tell It to the Mountain is a good song?
Maybe Oh Sweet could fit nicely in the second half (though it’s not as old as the rest of these tracks, so that wouldn’t make sense logistically)

I actually love Tell it to the Mountain lol
Though I do think the Hollinndagain recording is weaker than the other one we have (is that Sacramento)? Its such a brutal song in that recording. On Hollinndagain it sounds a bit aimless, but I love that other version, it's just fuckin eviscerating. the climax of avey and panda screaming into the same mic is wonderful
