Checking here and atease daily and wading through the thousands of posts about the album before it came out. When that website dropped with the swimming background and the name 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' and the date, we were very confused. "Are they playing at Merriweather or something? Debuting the recorded album there?" When it finally sunk in that it was the actual record name, I remember being so confused at how unexpected and weird the choice was. It was one of the things I admired so much about the band back then. So many of their decisions and the sound of their music was so unexpected. Seems like they're a little more predictable now but no negative feelings at all. Merriweather as a title now is just so iconic. Not sure if I'll ever experience that excitement from music/album hype again...
Bridge to Quiet - gonna second this one. Very evocative to me. It has a finality to it that I like
STGSTV - Cool, whimsical title that fits the theme well
Buoys - PBvsGR is a cool title, but has started to wear on me a bit. I just love Buoys for its simple title, the hype surrounding it, and the misspelling to BOUYS when it first was being teased. Ah, memories

Painting With - just love the title, it's exciting and playful to me, just like the music

I would say Time Skiffs is the weakest name. Just don't see how it relates to the sound or the songs in any way. Funny that the only name that I feel doesn't fit is for the album they recorded remotely. So maybe it does fit in a way. Everything else is basically perfect but Sung Tongs IS the one. Perfect synthesis between name, cover, and sound.
1. Centipede Hz - I was just so hyped for this record. The weirdness of the title hits me just right.
2. Tomboy - Clever record title. Just feels evocative and strange.
3. A Day with the Homies - Funny title.
4. Strawberry Jam - I think about it every time I eat strawberry jam.
5. Cows on Hourglass Pond - as others have said it's just nice to say

for me:
1. Down There - i don't know why but it's just evocative to me- down where? hell, the swamp, channel tunnel, glasgow subway.. who knows
2. here Comes the indian - i know this is contentious as they have changed the name but it is just kind of mysterious to me, almost doesn't mean anything but just is a strange and intriguing title for an album (sorry boys)
3. Danse Manatee - kinda love how it references danse macabre and the music fits the title perfectly, mysterious and completely unique... a bit of a tangent but danse manatee is the AC album that really could never have been made by anyone else, a completely unique sound palette that I have never heard anywhere else
4. Time Skiffs - a lot of people don't like this one but it puts me in mind of h.g. wells and the time machine, like where could we go if skiffs could travel time, a bit steampunky maybe in how it's futuristic but also old fashioned at the same time
5. Person Pitch - perfect pitch, perfect album, it just makes sense
Shout out to PBVSGR, i love that it references old school dub records and i do love those kind of titles, don't know why but it's never felt very fitting in the AC universe to me as a title (maybe a bit too literal) it sort of places AC in the real world slightly too much where in my head they are more of an ephemeral being, i don't know, love the title but just not for AC
5. Young Prayer - describes the sound/emotion of the content so well, naive lullaby hymns for his dying father
4. Feels - makes the phrase "I've got the feels" make so much more sense, just pure childlike wonder and love
3. Sung Tongs - great tongue twister to match the twisted melodies, also love that they call all the songs "tongs" in the liner notes

Sung Tongs are tongs about returning to an old house, doing nothing with friends, or making sound with bones. That is why Sung Tongs has the best album name.
i get there's tons of symbolism in the number and can represent lots of different things going on in one's life, but as a title it leaves a lot to be desired. especially since Beach House did it in 2018, amongst many others
1. Sung Tongs - beautifully compact, the simplicity of the initial word having the the soft fuzzy open of "s" and "u", and then the next word going full percussive T and open O, there's something very satisfying about it written, said, or typed.
2. ODDSAC - there's something intriguingly disgusting about this word. It's the most Animal Collective title of all their titles.
3. Bug Mall - I love the image of a mall, for bugs
4. Water Curses - has a really great UP down UP down structure, like water waves. Great synergy
i love sinister grift lol i guess it's a bit cheesy which is why some dislike it but it's so...sinister and evocative. i imagine like a dark purple vibe. this is the same guy who has albums called panda bear meets the grim reaper and a day with the homies so i feel like it fits right in

No idea where it came from initially but there has been an early, alternate mix of the album on YouTube for years prior to the band changing the title that has always been called Ark. idk, might have something to do with two sails on a sound being the centerpiece song of the album? This is also why that compilation is titled Ark, it's in reference. I personally like the biblical allusion way more than HCTI and it's still faithful so the name change was fine by me. I prefer Ark honestly.
Speaking of, here are my favorites that I could rack up right now with a short synopsis:
MPP - Such an iconic name, I think others have gone on about why it works so well but I also just feel how unique of a name it is just adds so much to its remembrance. Representing Baltimore, summer nights, and just being unforgettable. Something about 'post pavilion' just sounds so... optimistically postmodern. Really feels like a mark of its time but still timeless...
Painting With - I'm a sucker for prepositional phrases I guess. It's just so off kilter as a title, I don't personally see it as "Painting With Animal Collective" like some Bob Ross bs, moreso just like... the idea of painting along. Idk. Really encapsulates something about their music that works so well for me.
Ark - I kinda mentioned it before but the biblical allusion sorta gives this album another weight, as this sorta facing western civilization and banality kind of way. I think this is probably their most cohesive album in terms of motifs in that regard, and I think Here Comes the Indian works but I also think it adds another element that isn't necessary... growing up in Catholic and expecting to be some kind of "do good" industry engineering type, naming this album Ark and making it a scream in the face of everything suburban types are supposed to do... idk. Makes it a lot more cohesive. Also refers to Noah's Ark from Japan I guess lel
Time Skiffs - It just sounds fuckin cool. Invokes a lot of feeling and whatnot. Whatever I like it a lot. The little boat guys helped make it for me. RnD just feels like sailing across time on a skiff to me. Also the only other time I've ever heard the term skiff is in Star Wars RoTJ which is funny to me (particularly because I don't really like that movie but it's nostalgic and I will always love/hate that franchise out of nostalgia....)
Sung Tongs - Fun wordplay
Feels is pretty good but unfortunately tainted by internet slang a bit to me. I also can't pick a least favorite. Also Buoys, Sleep Cycle, and Meets the Grim Reaper are fucking phenomenal titles from solo picks (sorry Avey).
1. PANDA BEAR MEETS THE GRIM REAPER by 4,000 miles!
2. Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper is super memorable, strange, and evocative.
3. Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper is a perfect thesis statement for the album's themes.
4. Its daring to be a musician named Panda Bear and name your album Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper ( my real 4th reason is because of how well the LP album art (and probably cd too?) connects with the title and theme, that drawing and panda at the mixer with the grim reaper hanging over him saying " I know not what tomorrow will bring" is my single favorite piece of imagery associated with music)
