i still can't really listen to this album, it was such a disappointment when it came out. i got into the AC when Feels came out, right when they started playing chores, fireworks, reverend green, and safer live. i saw them in 2006 and listened to every bootleg i could. the SJ songs sounded amazing on those tours, but the band decided to strip the songs down in the studio, and i respect that. chores is one of my favorite AC songs, but i think they really botched the mixing on here, avey is way too low and panda is too high over everything else. fireworks, another amazing song, doesn't sound as powerful with one dry vocal from avey and none of the atmosphere of feels. SJ sounds like a radio session to me. oh well. the song are still great. in terms of pure songwriting, i'd rank em like this:

I feel like a lot of people have been recently saying that SJ is actually the superior to MPP and all of that hype for MPP was just because of pitchfork. I like this album a lot but I do think it just barely sits on the top half of their discography, if not then right smack in the middle. I feel like there should be a track in between "For Reverend Green" and "Fireworks", matter of fact, this whole album feels like there are tracks missing. It sounds like Animal Collective wanted to make a super long, "White Album" style record where every song was a different display of a creative idea they had while making it, but they cut off like half a disc because they didn't like it. I mostly just think they could've gone a bit further with the "winter" side of the album since that's the shortest but the best in my opinion. Still a good album with some amazing moments though.

yea i thought the sung tongs one was a dumb idea but it got a lot of posts so i assumed there might have been some interesting discussion going on there. but i just looked again and there isn't

Gonna admit that #1 is one of my least favorite AnCo songs and SJ is one of the only AnCo albums that I don’t really think has clicked with me yet—I love a lot of songs on there but songs like Cuckoo Cuckoo and #1 just haven’t clicked with me yet even though I was able to pretty easily digest and love a more abrasive album like STGSTV. I’ll definitely give it another listen now that I’m much more into AnCo than I was when I initially heard it the first few times.
